Starting issue
Hi all,
First , does any one know a good auto elec. in Melbourne that knows muscle cars? Since I bought the car 2.5 years ago, I've been having a "ghost" starting issue Sometimes when I turn the key, it just goes CLICK and nothing. Do it again, it starts fine. This only happens once in every let's 20 turns. Hot and cold , no difference. Since I bought the car, I had the original starter rebuild, new battery terminals , new battery, new MSD igntion and leads Still happening. It pisses me off as I am paranoid that one time it will just not start .. Any ideas? I was told it sounds like weak connection at the key .. |

Yep - Wade was great. Is in the USM recommended suppliers thread. Can't offer any suggestions on the issue other than pulling the ignition barrel and testing it / ensuring connections strong? Dunno.. I hate electrics

I am assuming the battery is in good condition, with good, clean battery cable connections.
The 'click' syndrome can have a few causes: [1] excessive resistance in the solenoid cct, usually a purple wire in GM cars. Could be the ign sw, neutral sw, bulkhead connector etc. [2] hold in cct inside sol is faulty [3] sol contacts worn [4] Starter itself, loose wire, worn brushes. The starting cct design was not one of GMs shining engineering achievements... Chrysler got it right by using an ign relay. Ford did the same, but used an ugly, heavy relay/sol. You can bypass much of this excessive wiring/resistance by fitting a 60 amp relay that activates from the purple wire. Through the relay terminals, relay switches battery +ve direct to the starter. Relay, Jaycar # SY-4074, $9. 28mm square. |

Thanks all, thank you Geoff.
Yes battery is new, and cables etc are all new I had the starter completely rebuild 6 months ago. I will call Wade and let him work it out. I have a gut feeling it is something around the key , purple wire like you said. |

The ign switches do wear out. I had to replace mine in my GTO.
