What do you consider to be a 'Muscle Car'

I've seen a bit of debate lately on the Aus. car forums, apparently happening in the US too about what constitutes a muscle car. A lot of Aussies are butt-hurt their beloved race specials and modded cars they've been calling muscle cars don't really fit the category.

I tend to favour how they define it in the US: 2 door, 4 speed with significant horsepower and I don't think our car companies built many; we definitely didn't release any with a big block as standard. The closest I can think would be HK GTS327, HT/HG GTS350, Charger E55 and E57 and possibly the XA GT Coupe with the 4V Cleveland engine (RPO83).

Most, favourably call a 4 door a taxi, lol, so not really in the same league.

From the link: Pony cars are often confused with muscle cars because they look similar and some have power. But like the GTO, looks can be deceiving and the power of a pony car is to a great extent inferior to that of a muscle car. A few well-known pony cars are the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and Plymouth Barracuda. Contrary to popular belief, the Corvettes of the 1960s era were not considered muscle or pony cars.

Thoughts?

I love how they get so particular about it..

So a TH400 behind a solid cam, 4 barrel, 396/375 in a Chevelle is not a muscle car?
Bollocks.

Yeah, you have a point and so many of their cars are autos.

According to Barrett-Jackson’s Steve Statham, there is even a time limit, “The muscle-car era stretched as late as 1974 because of one car”

I believe to most Yanks the accepted 'true' definition is a mid size with a big block.

My definition - V8 and nasty, more straight line than roundy roundy. But I ain't goin' to war over it.
