My 20 year old son wants a muscle car, ideas?

Sadly, he has his eye on a Chev, probably an Impala. After disowning him and threatening to cut his **** off I said I would do some research for him.

He is after an entry level car, nothing too expensive, a two door and a small block. Something pretty stock that he can just test the waters with.

Mid to late 60's Impala's are his weapon of choice and probably base model cars will be the only ones in his price range. Anyone have an idea what he can expect to pay for a neat, running car with no bells and whistles?

Anyone know of any I can get him to have a look at online so he can get a feel for what his $$$$ can buy?

Though you mention 2 door, if Impala's are his thing don't overlook the pillarless 4 doors. They are sex. Looks of a 2 door, practicality of a 4. Plus they are generally cheaper. 2 doors are the more desired in the US an pull more coin.

He'll love being 20 in an Impala. Gigantic boat that will fit him and 5 mates easily. Ultimate cruiser. Wish I had discovered them at that age.

Plus you can find them in RHD if that is an issue. 65, 66 & 67 being the better years (67's being the pinnacle ).

What sort of price range you looking at? And are you wanting something to work on or jump in a drive?

I dunno Russ, he doesn't live with me and I haven't had a lot to do with him over the years....long story, but its not his fault, he's a good kid...um, young man.

It's all his plan, i'm just researching a bit for him. A pillarless 4-door, not a bad idea, i'll put it to him but my thinking was better resale on a hardtop if he wants to move it down the track, but if funds are an issue it could mean the difference between having a US muscle car or driving a Commodore!

Can he drive a V8 at 20 ? Not in Vic. I bought my son a 70 El Camino with a 350, but will sbe dropping a 250 straight six.

I think a foor door pillarless Impala would be a good choice. Especially in RHD.

Cheers,
Frank.

Step 1: pat him on the back for not wanting one of those ricer-on-roids with drinking straws like in that other thread.

Also as frank said at 20 on his p plates in vic he is not allowed v8, supercharged, or turbo car. If he is caught driving one the car can be impounded as per a hoon law impoundment.

I had a friend with a 600cc gsxr motorbike on l plates and it got impounded for this reason apparently having no licence and riding is a $450 fine having l plates and riding same bike is impoundment, fine, and demerit points....go figure.

Yeah, it's kinda dumb as the 6 I am putting in the Elky I reckon will go harder than the tired old 350.

Plus I cant imagine a full-size Impala with a stockie sbc being much of a rocket. I know my Gal with a 289 and 2 barrel isn't !

They should go on power-to-weight - I think they only do that for hipo 6s like Beemers and 911s etc.

Cheers,
Frank.

ACT doesn't appear to have the P plate restrictions the nanny states do. If that's where Craig's son lives, he'll be fine with a small block.

Yeah, Vic is joke. They want to introduce 30 kmh speed limits now.

Ugh.

Cheers,
Frank.

Put him in a Riviera, 66-67 Rivs are one of the best looking late 60s cars made and are often surprisingly cheap.

There are a quite few in Aus, many are RHD.

Very cheap in the US.

And you can't say this GS340 aint cool..

Turn him from the darkside and remind him of his heritage!!

I really like those old Buicks as well as Oldsmobile's from the same era. Some real cool & unusual stuff that we don't see much of.

You're lucky, all my 20yo wants is newer computer to slay dragons with his mouse!
Also look at Dodge Phoenixs,Ford Galaxies, Rambler Matadors or Rebels-all four doors are much cheaper than coupes though.
