Mitch's 68 Camaro. Project 'ORANGE BLOOD'

Well, I suppose I better get some details down before I start the long and loborious rebuild process of my 68...

I have been looking for one for a while now and finally found something within my budget and to my liking in QLD. It arrived last Thrusday after a month long shipping fiasco through AutoTrans. It also arrived with a broken boot spoiler and gouges in the paint from some knob jockey pushing it from the back...

The car also rocked up as a non runner due to the starter motor and ring gear being lunched by the tools continually attempting to start it after it had already begun slipping.

The AutoTrans guy I spoke to told me that "It's common on these old FORD's mate"... What a Muppet!

Any way it's now in my garage awaiting some loving.. The intention is to firstly get it to a running state and then attempt to create a plan of attack as to how and where I am going to start the rebuild.

I have new floor pans (full sections) on the way from the States now as I knew that they needed to be done and the rear strut tops also need to be repaired. The boot floor seems to be solid and I can only imagine it has it's fair share of bog hiding all manner of nasties under the paint work. The chassis also looks solid and I'm hoping there won't be much work needed in that area.

I don't have a huge budget for the car and my wife and I are forcasting a 7 year build at this stage...

What do I want to achieve with the car?

I luuuurvvvv the Pro Touring look and will more than likely go down that road. I have 18" front and 20" rear polished Coys C5 rims and they will be the basis for the look I'm after.... It also has a steel 2" cowl hood and will be bumperless.

No plans on paint and driveline at this point in time.

The Mrs would like to keep it black and go black leather interior though... The car was originally Red with black stripes until the last owner decided to paint it black and I must admit I prefer the original paint scheme...




The driveline will stay as is for the short term as it's the body I want to get upto scratch first and foremost.

I'm not after a powerhouse at the moment (but that may change in the future) as I have my 13b turbo 808 for ****s and giggles...



So i'll just get it to a drip less reliable driveline for now..

Your car looks nice in the photos, looks like you have good starting point.
Gotta luv a tidy 1st Gen Camaro.
Not sure about the seats though

Are you doing a complete strip down and rebuild or are you doing it piece by piece so you can keep it as driver?

Hey Nev,

I would like to keep it as a driver if I can, but I need to do the floor pans so that will obviously mean it will have to be stripped down to a fair degree.

Whats wrong with my 60's red velour pornstar seats and shag pile carpet?

Hey Mitch,
You can do the big jobs over winter and keep driving through the nice weather.
It's bloody frustrating having a nice car in the shed and not being able to drive it.
Give me black vinyl (it's good for seats too )

Ha ha, nice one

Replaced the starter pinion gear yesterday and shimmed the starter motor so it can mesh with the ring gear properly.

Cranked it over and whalla. She's a goer now!

Bye the way, I went to Chev Power in Maddington today and they ha two 68's out the back. One fully resto'd over the last 11years and the other just arrived from the US with a big block in it.

No real updates from me except to that my court summons for my 'replica or immitation' plate was waiting for me when I returned home from work and I am due in court on the 7th of January... YAY lucky me! http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/w...74111/s97.html

On a good note, my floorpans are getting closer to arriving on Aussie shores and I had a call from the photographer that shot my Mazda for PSC Mag and apparently Fast Fours wants to feature it as well. So I better pull my finger out and finish off the boot properly and stick my bigger turbo on it... as he wants to do the shoot next break.

Well, I can't say i've done all that much however I did replace the starter motor with a high torque jobby and it soooo much better. I was having problems with the other one as it just wouldn't stay in position. It kept pushing away from the flex plate no matter how tight the bolts were.

The new starter came with it's own birth cirtificate and dyno sheet... It has 9KW of stump pulling starting power according to the dyno sheet

I also took the old girl to my panel repairer/painter for him to give it the once over and then we can formulate a plan of attack. At this point were in two minds in which direction I should head. At this stage it's a matter of discussion and we'll probably make a decision after Xmas...

I also sold my rotor last week, so I now have the room to start pulling bits apart and since my floor pans have landed in Australia that might be the first port of call.
