Thanks Roger. I'll let you know how they go. They should arrive any day now along with new Hotchkis front springs, rear bumper and new one piece (the lower profile one) deck lid spoiler. Just about to order some more goodies before the AUD goes too much further south.

Got in this arvo and disassembled the rear of the car. Bumper and spoiler off, lights out, trunk latch out and wiring harness out. I think I'll actually start stripping some paint tomorrow. I'll post up some more photos tomorrow.

Brooke, I bet I get mine done first. You even had a head start.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. It's really encouraging.

What was wrong with your rear bumper?

I'm looking for one to try some different finishes on.

Roger,

The car has had a tap in the rear at some stage and the bumper is a little bent. Was going to try to get it straightened and re chromed, but decided to buy a new one instead.

Progress

OK. Made some more progress today although it doesn't really look like it. Got the rear disassembled, tail lights, licence plate lights, trunk wiring harness and rear bumper out.

Then, my mate started cleaning up the trunk pan. It looks OK with only a few small spots of rust. The drop offs are toast though and the previous repair attempt looks terrible. They tried to cover it all up with seam sealer which just made it worse.

I started to strip the paint from the rear quarters.

It's funny, cos I said paint, cos there wasn't much there. It mostly consisted of bog over these rather interesting previous repair attempts.

Not sure if the photo picked it up here, but the bog in the passenger rear quarter is about 3/8 of an inch thick.

All in all I achieved what I set out to today and that was to get a look at what was under the paint in the rear quarters. I suspected they were bad and now I know they are. This is only what I've found so far, and other areas are very suspect. I have replacement quarter panels, so I don't think I'm gonna mess with stripping these any further. I'll have a chat to the body guy and make sure he is comfortable with me cutting these off and then get in and do it. I really what to see what the wheelhouses look like anyway and I think the only real way to do that is to remove the rear quarters.

Stripped some paint off the roof as well and will strip the front clip panels this week. That's about it for now.

Progress

OK, despite the heatwave here in Brisbane over the last couple of days I've made some progress. Have been wire wheeling the trunk pan, which looks pretty good and managed to cut off the passenger rear quarter which was full of bog and dodgy repairs. I've now just got to cut the rest of the material away from the edges. I'm planning on using an air chisel for most of it, and yes, I'm planning on taking it very, very slowly and carefully. Let me know if you think this is a bad idea.

Other than a dodgy repair on the trunk drop offs, underneath looks pretty solid and rust free which I'm very happy about.

I've never done anything like this before, so taking a cut off wheel to the rear quarter guard was quite daunting. But, I'm actually glad that it is now off so that I can clean up and treat the metal underneath. I was going to use POR15 as it seems the standard here, but if anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

I'm now getting excited that I've gotten to this point and can start to clean and repair in preparation for fitting new panels. A lot of work to go though.

Darren

Darren I have a mate that can get Hemple paints, they are a 1/4 of the cost of por15 and work the same is not better, based in Brisbane.

let me know if you are keen and I can organise something.

I would be interested as well. Seems they make marine coatings so you can bet its the nuts!
