Festival Of Speed - Wanneroo - Mark Webber

Another event I only just found out about:

www.festivalofspeed.com.au

The event, unique to Perth, will be similar to the UK’s famous Goodwood Festival of Speed and feature a day packed with at least 14 kinds of motorsport, including a new lap record attempt by Mark Webber – who might well be the world F1 champion by then.

The Festival of Speed (FOS) will be held just two weeks after the end of the F1 season, and Webber is one of the favoured winners.

He has confirmed he will bring his Red Bull Renault F1 racer with him and a crew of 11.

The day will be full of events, some run in a four-parallel program, and using the racing circuit and the adjacent hill climb,” he said.

“We will have all kinds of motorsports on track, including historics, rally and racing cars, drifting, dragsters, karts, supertrucks, racing motorcycles – the full story of speed.”

Tickets are already on sale, priced from $18 to $80 at www.festivalofspeed.com.au or from The Pitstop Bookshop in St Georges Terrace

PS Apparently Webber is going to try and set a new lap record in his F1 car.

Heard about this a month or so ago. It's on on my shift change/night shift day... Trying to get it off... Should be different, when else would us WA folks get to see an F1 cranking round a track?

Got in there piece of piss Marty. I got there bang on 9am, no traffic congestion at all. Parked up and grabbed our gear and there was already a huge lineup at the last corner entry so I simply walked around to the pit entry at the rear and went in that way with no delay.

Set up our little UV Beach Shelter and sat in there while the sun was still on it's way up. I always sit at the last corner where the grove of Eucalypts are as they provide shade in the arvo. Went for a wander through the pits a little while after the 1st RBR run and took some pics of all the Euro goodness laying around.

Watched Dan do his run in the F1 from the grandstand area on the straight and stood at the front of the RBR tent as he pulled back in. Saw a few people wandering around the Winnebago and then realised that Webber was inside. Stood there with my 6 year old on my shoulders for a good half an hour in the sun waiting for Webber to show his face and hopefully sign some autographs, I even yelled out at one point asking him to come and see his fans and do some signing as we were all melting in the heat... No reply as he sat with his back to us all in his A/Con luxury.

When he finally came out at 2:10 the Security Guards got a bit overzealous and pushed me and Hayden back against the Winnebago quite forcefully, if the bus wasn't there then we would have easily have fallen over. My 6 year old was quite upset at the ordeal and it probably didn't help that I started giving the Security a gob full for their efforts! But we had no where to move and it was totally uncalled for!

I actually spoke to Maryanne (one of the event organisers) and also to Deech about the incident and they came good after the event getting Hayden the autograph that he so sorely wanted!! All's well that ends well...

I only had my iPhone so the pics and vids aren't great but here are a few. And yeah, I know I spelt Dan Ricciardo's name incorrectly in the titles... LOL

Deech (the dude in the hat) also popped us front row centre for when Webber was escorted to the Disco 3 to leave the event.

To my knowledge there were no official signing times for Webber or Ricciardo? I would have thought that they wold have had a table or something for Webber and co to sit at and set aside an hour to allow his fans to get up close and personal. I believe the only opportunity fans had were after he drove the F1 car and parked it back in the pits or if you were lucky enough to get trampled by his Security Team and arrange a personal signing later on

Here are a couple of my iPhone pics:

Hayden in the 2010 Camaro. Bit different to my 68 model!!

Just before we got trampled by Webber's Security

A happy boy with his prized signature

On the way out I came across a young bloke with a Black 68 Camaro SS. Very tidy looking car and mentioned the forum. He said that some bloke by the name of Marty had accosted him before about joining up

Yeah, not a bad day.....
BUT, the organisation could have been a lot better in many areas..
These guys should have come up when Powercruise was on, and learnt how to organise, and set it up properly....
The pits were a joke really, too much congestion, they put the RBR tent in the wrong spot....
see how they go next year??
Anyway, my old man took his 03 vette for a few laps, and only left the track twice...haha....sorry, no video

I left home just after 9am and the old man told me to go the long way to the track as he had heard there was a 5 km line already. I came from the Bullsbrook end and came down Neaves Rd. The line was all the way to the round a bout on Neaves and Old Yanchep Rd and continued along Neaves Rd past Pinjar. I ended up going all the way down Wanneroo Rd to Nowgerup Rd which is just past the Sea View Tavern and came in the back way to Wattle Ave and drove straight up to the gate, watching people carrying chairs and eskys. Got in to the track just after ten. No waiting in traffic at all. They need to seriously think about doing some major road changes and different entry points for spectators. It may have served well 20 years ago but compared to other tracks around Australia its a joke.

The day was pretty good, ran pretty smooth and quite a good range of cars. A few more laps for the race cars would have been nice but all in all a good day. Look forward to next year.

Luke

Nice report Mitch, at least you got to rub shoulders with Riciardo, he may end up driving F1 soon! and be a champion. We can only hope so.
