Help on VASS approval for a 1969 Camaro

Guys,

Just called Vicroads for help on getting my 69 camaro registered, and they told me a I need VASS approval and a number stamped into the chassis, then RWC and then inspection at vicroads to verify it all.

Sounds like a crock, the whole VASS thing, as 01/01/69 forward is when you need VASS approval for any car, although, basically the 69 is the same as a 67/8, which you dont need the approval for...

Anyway, car is pretty much stock, LHD, 307, turbo 350, disc front end, (was going to put a 454 in it, which is why I was calling vicroads), so now I need to find a VASS guy to go over the car. Anybody know of a good guy to use? I have heard some guys charge through the roof just to inspect, then tell you they cant help you?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... (Im in West Melbourne)

Also, any info what they look for in particular would be great too...

Cheers,

Steve...

Thanks guys, just need to call around. I think first on the list will be Russell.

Also, got any idea if there will be any issues with dropping a 454 in before? it stock standard, nothing over the top... Not even putting extractors on it...

Any ideas of cost for VASS approval? or any issues to look forward to?

The 454 will be fine.. Best tell them it's a 396 or 427 to stop them worring their poor selves over it, and so they don't get you doing all sorts of un-necesary stuff.
Engineers like to go well overboard covering their arses at your expense.

Excuse my ignorance but why is there a need for VASS? I registered my 1970 El Camino last week, i had roadworthy cert and import approval, nothing else required.

70 Camino, Nice! Had it been previously registered in Australia though? Mind asking where you went to get it done?

The elco had never been rego'd in Australia before. I just rang Vicroads and booked in a time for rego which was the Broadmeadows RTA.
When i rang to book in for rego they said to bring roadworthy and import approval, licence, and a reciept from who i bought it from Melbourne.

Cool! I might call up and see what they say? Should be getting it done, but depends if I do the engine swap? It is a nice day today, and I have done all the work on the car outside anyway! Do you know if they ask the build date and verify it? Im thinking mine just so happens to be built in Nov '68

Did they actually look at the car at all?

Thanks for all the help too!

Steve...

They only checked the engine number and vin number to see that it was the same as the import approval and the rest was checking all the paperwork. They did not test anything else on the car.
