Yeah Darren, they are silver. Never seen white trim on any Camaro's I've looked at, only ever seen chrome / silver. No problem though, you can use "bare metal foil" from any hobby shop and change it to silver.

Thanks Vic,

The OEM repops I got are white. Silver it is. Great tip on the BMF as well. Have never heard of it but just googled it. It'll do the job just fine.

Thanks again.

Darren

I haven't been impressed with the light output from my headlamps and so with the sh!tty weather today, I decided it was time to install a pair of relays. There are plenty of websites with wiring diagrams so I won't go into that.

I found a neat relay box from an Astra at the wreckers. Holds 2 relays and is water resistant.

Measured up the wire lengths and made the harness.

Found suitable mounting hole on the inner wheelhouse, Drilled a second hole and then installed a pair of rivnuts. Too easy.

All installed in about an hour. All works fine. Need to wait for night to be amazed by the extra brilliance

I'll be interested to see how you go with this Vic,, I have been underwhelmed by the hurricane lanterns I have for headlights for a while so need an upgrade.

What lamps are you using?

Are you growing pumpkins?

Hi Nev,

ha ha, the pumpkin was the previous owner's handiwork. Thought I'd leave it there in his memory.

Headlamps are just your average chinese ebay specials with H4 bulbs 60/55W. But here's the thing. I checked the voltage at the bulb and I had 11.5V. I thought this was pretty good until I did some research and found that at 11.5V I had 20% less lumens than at 12.5V. See graph.

I will have to check what voltage I have now but car is at a garage getting new rear springs - but that's another post for later.

Tried out the headlamps last night. Huge improvement!! All I can say is that it's a simple and easy to do project with big pay back.

Good job Vic, so you only added the relays and got improvement, or was there additional changes?
I don't suppose you have a diagram for the relay connection(?)

It would just be getting main power source for the headlights direct from battery (instead of through a factory fuse block/junction block). The old headlight power would be the trigger for the new relays. The just do one relay per headlight.....

Pretty much what Marc said, Nev. I ran a wire from the battery to 2 relays. Then 2 wires from each relay to each head lamp. You'll need one relay for low and one for High beams. I used relays with 2 x '87' terminals so i wouldn't need to splice the wire to the lamp. If you have relays with 87 and 87A terminals you will need to splice the '87' feed to left and right headlamps.

Here's my wiring diagram for reference (colours apply to a 1971 Camaro).

Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Just a couple of extra notes.

Keep the fuse as close as practical to the battery. You don't want long lengths of un-fused wire in your car.

The headlamp terminal housings are shown looking into the "wire in" side.

Something has been bothering me about the way the rear wheels fit in my Camaro since I got the wider rims and I've finally figured it out.

The axle is biased to the LHS. By about 6mm.

This means that the driver's side wheel looks great, with the tyre being close to the outside edge of the fender. While the passenger side looks buried in the wheel well.

From what I can see and what I've read, this isn't unusual on Gen 2 Camaros. Unfortunately, it isn't just a matter of loosening bolts and adjusting stuff.

Time to do something about it.
