12k surcharge???

Been speaking directly with Australian Customs Re. importing a 1970 Nova from America into Australia and they have told me about a possible 12k surcharge I may be hit with when the car arrives??? Anyone else had this issue and how is it avoided? The car is only 25k US.

Hmm seems a bit steep? Maybe try a broker - there's a gazillion different tariffs applicable, maybe they're getting confused

Don't talk directly to the Govt. They will hose you with every fee they can because you won't know any better. There's also little guarantee the person you are talking to knows any better either.

Hire an agent (CCI mentioned above is a good start). They know the tricks and traps.

Another recommendation here, talk to Dom or Julian, they can look after everything for you

You do have an import approval, right? Only way you can be charged that sort of money is if you don't have approval and they refuse to allow it into the country. Then you're up for storage and return freight fees.

Cleared 2 containers of vehicles this week and there were no such charges. In fact we have shipped hundreds of container and thousands of vehicles and never heard of anything like that.
