I've got 275/60/15's on the rear of mine. Fits fine, granted it's a little high atm but even a few inches lower shouldn't rub. I wouldn't try any wider though...

I wouldn't risk it with carry on probably (especially in the states where they're super strict - but then I've never tried), but don't see why there'd be an issue with checked luggage.

I had the same problem. Fiddled with it for a while then gave up and swapped it out for a B&M Quicksilver shifter.

edit: I should note my detent plate was a shiftworks one that had been mangled...
