How do you guys get your bits? I need a floor and and maybe doorskins.etc. Do you import yourself from the catalogue people, use local vendors ?
I have no problems importing myself but some times can be false economy.
If you buy locally who do you use ??
Appeciate any help or advise

Depends how many parts you need as to if its worth it or not......... I could help you as I do it from time to time but you being in melbourne are better off dealing with someone down your way..........

Sirgeo will point you in the right direction! ;)

BTW I have a full LH 1/4 panel for a 69 if you need ;)

Yeah some vendors here already have the bits.. like that EastCoast Mustang and Camaro's.. i know they should have some door skins as i was looking at them a month or 2 ago... Although i saw 67/68, they should have some 69's aswell.

As for floors.. if they havn't got any in stock, they usually know someone else in the area that might have one.. if not they will freight it for you :p save you the hassles ;)

Also make sure you get a printed (physical) Classic Industries (http://www.classicindustries.com/) catalogue.. always handy to know a rough price of what something you just broke is going to cost you :p Most Places that sell the parts should be able to supply you with one... If not, let me know and i'll get a few extra next time i get the chance..

Steve.

Welcome Jim :)

How often do you bring stuff across? And the smaller stuff does it cost much to bring over yourself?

I've always been to scarred to organise it myself, knowing my luck it would come back all damaged from transport :p

Hey Steve, I bring stuff out spazmotically(sp), you have to watch who you buy stuff from 'cause some of these guys give it to you hard with their "handling" charges. If you go to the USPS site you can get an estimate of the cost which usually works out about right.

Out of Fedex,Ups, and USPS, USPS is usually cheaper and they do have tracking so don't believe some wanker over there that say's they don't.Try to bring out a heap at once and not **** in dribs and drabs or it ends up costing to much. If your bringing stuff out AIR try to keep it under $1000au otherwise you'll get pinched for gst and other cheesy gov taxes.

EG:I bought some Ross pistons for my Nova, Cost me $1032us our government gave it to me in the arse for 50%+gst and they ended up costing $2000au, it was still cheaper than i could buy here but thats not the point.
If you bring stuff in surface it's worse, try and keep it under $200au.

I bought some 68 Dodge charger mirrors of ebay this week, they weigh just over a kilo and their costing $39us to post.

Another thing is if you buy new gear and want warranty you'll have to send it back to the States....and it ain't worth it so you have to suck that up also. I recently bought a new Autometer in dash tach which was rooted when i got it....tough **** for me.

cheers
Jim

Yeah i've been told about keeping certain things below prices.. unless i'm prepared to pay a big tax.. or if i bring a whole container :p

Currently i mainly use sellers who already have the stuff here, but i have found 1 or 2 things cheaper in the states that i wish i could bring over.. but was too scared.. might give something small and simple a shot and see how it goes ;)

Can I fit 2 door skins, a front sub frame, some new side mirrors, some Wilwood brakes and a long list more of stuff in carry on luggage????

I am in Vegas in 3 weeks time for work, was planning on bringing some small stuff back in luggage....beats paying GST and delivery.

But yeah I find USPS cheapest, or a container all at once

If you get a container start taking orders, i'm sure these blokes would want a few things delivered. Would help you pay for it.

lol... whats the weight and size limit to take on a plane (international) these days? if you can fit it all in lugage might be cheaper to pay for an extra seat ;)

And Chris if you bring over some brakes let me know.. might get you to get an extra set for me :p

At this stage wasn't planning on brakes this trip, but if you want I am happy to bring em back if they aren't too big, I'll just pay for extra baggage......give me a buzz if you want to chat about it 0418 342 857...can't bring much back but can squeeze some smaler stuff in with me in the baggage compartment on the plane, may need to pay duties in the airport but no biggy

The luggage limit I think your allowed about 30 or down 25kg for international flights depending on your airfare. But the internal flights are like Zero & you pay extra for everything pretty much, best to drive from Vegas to LA anyway. Chris, I'll have a set too if your bringing them in with your luggage and tax free, so will probably everybody.:-)
(you'll get back from Vegas with a either muscles or a bad back...)

I ended up getting my brake kit local;y, but I have bought way way more than 30kg in through luggage, beauty of being a Platinum Frequent Flyer, they don't charge for excess unless it's way way over, I had one lot that was 80Kg and no excess charge

When going through customs, I can tell you a story.

Coming back from Singapore, I had 4 large boxes of Home Theater equipment, weighed about 50Kg and cost just over $14,000

Customs stop me 5am in the morning and the woman says, Is this AUDIO equipment ? I said no it's home theater, she says, Oh ok so it's AUDIO equipment, I say well umm yes it is, she says we don't charge GST on that, on your way....

Yeah I am a bit slow but it was great, saved $1400 (mind you that was 2006)
