Dillon,

So may ways to do this.....

Cheapest, find someone who is brining out a container with some spare space.

I brought out a full crate engine (carby to pan) with AutoEzy Search in Bayswater. I said when there is space throw it in, it took 7 months, but I didn't need it in a rush. It cost me $395 shipping. I had to pay GST on it though but it's 10% of value of what you paid for the product so no big deal. They even insured it for me in case anything happened for $96

They are also brining out my new Art Morrison front end same way.

As long as you aren't in a hurry this is the easiest way to do it...even if not through them but there are tonnes of people brining over containers.....

Others will be faster than 7 months, I just seriously was in absolutely no rush...it's here and I am still not even close to ready to dropping the motor in.

mate ask the places your getting your stuff from..perhaps they have good shipping deals..... it always pays to ask you may be surprised..

For instance I have killer rates for import with FED-EX through my work..... the goods ust over 100kg's for me to get that rate and it only takes 7 days.........

Your items will be heavier in dead weight versus volumetric weight.... economy air freight is another option...

cheers

I have some Import Questions with regard to importing a car.

1) Who do you recommend for importing cars. I'm located in NSW, and it seems that all importers run into QLD or VIC (so either way need to transport locally as well). Does the importer take care of all the paperwork? and arrange payment of the vendor?

2) Who do you recommend to perform inspections in the U.S. What do they do, and what do they provide? How long does it generrally take for them to turn it around? and what does it cost? Based on your experiences its best not to buy sight unseen, so will need to arrange an independant inspection.

3) What do I need to do to arrange rego in NSW. Inspections, modifications etc. What is the paperwork trail that needs to be followed?

Any help here is appreciated.

1. Call em, no matter who you use go through all your questions, most will take care of paperwork but you will need to provide some details

2. Depends, if it a full restorer it's probably OK not to, but if you want it to hit the ground running and registerable easily I would suggest doing it - they don't cost a lot

3. No idea....but suspect it's no different to Vic which require belts and turn inidcators as a minimum

You WILL need to do some of the paperwork yourself, see
http://www.dotars.gov.au/roads/safety/bulletin/importing.aspx
For full NSW rego ? Car needs to pass a blue slip, (for historic), a pink slip, club membership, POP and ID
There are a number of vehicle Inspection companies in the US, there prices and services vary but US $300 and about 48 hours before you see a report, so don't buy sight unseen unless (as clux said) "it's a project"
What are thinking of importing ? I maybe able to recommend someone

Mate...what US muscle are you after? If you are in Sydney like me....

Try Mick Donaher at US Musclecars. He advertises in Just Cars magazine and will import cars and parts. It is his full time business. Phone 0418486473. www.usmusclecars.com.au. Give him a call on what options he has for payment etc. Really genuine and customer oriented guy. Does his own unpacking. He is located near Hurstville.

He searches for cars and probably also organise inspections etc. He probably organises the DOTARS permits here in Oz too. You can't put a car on a boat without one. I saw a big block Chev Boss Hoss motorcycle the other day that did not have one...been sitting for 3 years and could not rego.

He may also provide rego services, but what is needed in NSW is the import approval, weighbridge ticket, work to get it roadworthy like any mechanical and brakes if needed, headlights being changed, indicators being orange, passenger as well as driver mirrors, lap sash seat belts, engine and chassis numbers, some kind of proof (like internet info or book) that the engine option came with the car or within 15% of cubes, etc., then a blue slip, fresh green slip with no rego number, then head to RTA, pay the man stamp duty and rego and get your plates. Any non standard work like more than 500 cubes in a 69 Camaro will probably need an engineers certificate. Also worth finding a blue slip guy that understands US classics. RTA tech line can supply blue slip guys in your area.

More info here: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/rego_new.html

Gordon Taylor at Narellan also advertises in Just Cars and is a good guy too. http://www.taylorsamericanclassics.com.au.

Trust this helps.

Cheers.

Those guys know there stuff and will probably look at a local car for you if you're a paid member ?
Worked for me and I'm happy.
Ask lot's of questions, the better informed you are, the better car you'll get.
you can never have too much information.
Avoid eBay and never buy a car just on photos, I've seen enough horror stories to last a lifetime.
Take your time, the dollar will still be up there in 6 months.
Happy hunting.

Hi Chris, could I ask what the freight cost was to ship from World in Long Island to LA for the shipping. Assuming you bought it direct from them.

Thanks, Ian

If itwas in Long Island... they would have shipped from East coast not LA.... Its not worth paying the $$$$ for inland freight to move the sh*t across the country.... I spoke with Autoezy just last week... they explained to me that they ship either out of LA or east coast somewhere (cant remember exactly where)

Hope that helps ?

Thanks guys. Good value out of NY. I had heard you could pay $1200 to get a car across from East to West. I had a quote to ship a trans from mid west to LA....US$300. Needless to say i did not take that option.

Cheers.

No wonder they call it the golden state....gotta pay gold to get there.

I got quoted $300 for a trans from Indiana to LA.

apparently most freight is inbound to CA...truckers dont like going there coz they cant get return loads...
