It's not a tune up day is it? Just throw it on, maybe make one or two timing changes, do a few pulls and on with the next car..

Hey Colin, given my recent aquisition of new carb, intake and ignition, would be awesome to do a 'before' run, bolt up the bits whilst others do theirs, then another 'after' crack if time allowed.

Obviously happy to pay double the share (or more if any extra sorting needed). Was going to wait till new cam etc went in, but seems like prime opportunity. (Then do again after final setup in).

Any issues from you or the crew?

With numbers hovering around 8 vehicles we are looking at $80/car.
That is for a full day of Dyno action.
Everyone should get in 2 pulls, one before and one after lunch.
So Dean, your before and after should be no problem at all.

I was sort of expecting that some people will want to do a little tweakin'.

OK, I have confirmed the booking with Chev's Performance for 2 July 2011, from 9:00am.

Chev's will supply a BBQ and we have to BYO meat, salads etc.
Please check post 1 of this thread for the confirmed participants.

Again spectators are OK but they will be expected to obey all safety directions from the shop boss, young children, unable to be trusted to comply with instruction are not permitted.

The Dyno guy is happy for it to take as long as it takes to make sure everyone has a go or two.
Some before lunch, some after.

Speaking of lunch, would you like me to arrange something for the BBQ?
I am happy to get some Kranskys and rolls, salads, sauces etc.
Don't want it too complex as there are more interesting things happening.

I will bring a stack of kranskys, onions, rolls, sauces, green stuff etc.
I am not sure if there is a Coke machine on site or not but BYO drinks is probably safest. Couple of bucks each should cover it.

Gary the Dyno guy is supplying some trophies for the event.
Not max horsepower, I don't want any engine injuries caused by chasing prizes.
The trophies will be awarded on other criteria that Gary will sort out on the day.

As for the "Not max horsepower, I don't want any engine injuries caused by chasing prizes." How about one for hp per cube deal? It doesn't matter if you are running a lawn mower size engine or a 740ci monster,at least everyone gets a chance at it?

BuickGSX455

I think he is doing a stock and a modified best effort sort of thing as well as a peoples choice.

The trophies were his idea, so I said it was up to him how they were awarded as long as everyone has a shot at something.
He understands that this is a social event more than a ring the neck out of it performance quest.
We still want to push it, but I just don't want any unnecessary pressure induced failures.

OK, my video's not as good as Jaso's, and I didn't get the screen in as my zoom on my little hand held not as good.

But here is 1 of SMOVE on the dyno
http://youtu.be/3H5t4n7fWgA
Crank up the volume !!!!

My 3 runs resulted in:

457 RWHP
444 RWHP and
443 RWHP

Lower than I was expecting. 0.72 HP per cube.

Jim's Nova did 0.85 HP per cube and sounds fricken awesome...

the rest of us were in the 0.6 to 0.7 HP per cube range.

I was expecting / hoping the first number would be a 5 on mine, but hey that just gives me a goal to shoot for. Given it ain't tuned etc plenty of scope to go.

Great day and weather was perfect...thanks Colin, looking forward to next year

Take those numbers with a pinch of salt..

With Ben's indicated 330rwhp, that means he is only capable of 105mph in the 1/4, where it takes a tad over 450 to run his 118..

I had mine Dyno'd in November, came out at 296 rwhp, this time it made 218 max
But... One thing I did notice is that the guy in Bayswater (Good Guys performance centre) performed the test in 2nd gear whereas yesterday's runs were done in Top, which is the norm?

It makes no difference, providing the 2nd gear ratio is part of the overall final drive ratio for the dyno calculation.

Doing the runs in high gear will provide less slipping of the tires.

A Dyno is a Tunning tool and also the dyno was set on Shoot-out mode which it is not a realistic measurement of road hosrepower, this setting is used for competition purposes.

The real numbers are on the drag strip, so everyone should get there arses down to the drag strip that includes you Jimbo. MAybe when should have a drag day......

also i did notice that the autos where done in top gear, but Jims manual was done in thrid gear

It was a really good day with very unusual results.
Most of us were mildly disappointed with final results.
What was interesting was the air-fuel mix info indicating that some of us have our carbys spot on and others, like mine, are quite a way out.
My best was 239 at the wheels but quite rich up to 4000rpm and extremely lean once the secondarys open. I have a lot of work to do.

Hmm, the print out they gave me had HP and AF ratio...not torque.

Also Jaso both used same config "shoot 8"

Does seem to be a bit of a difference...

All I know is Guffer (Shane's) wife drives one bitchin 57.....

67SS502
03-07-2011, 01:32 PM
Jaso if you look at the RR (RAMP RATE)value there is quite abit difference, at chev performace it is 150 and the other joint is only 16 which means Chev performace had much more rolling resistance on the tyres which will give lower HP/TQ readings. On the road there is no where near as much resistance on your tyres! BUT again the dyno is only a Tunning tool the real hp is mph on a Drag strip.

I would say that Jimbo's beast would have more like 500hp at the wheels and chris' beast would be 600hp

So, would we be interested in making this a regular event?
I know Chev's performance would certainly be up for it.
It could be very handy to have a regular shop we all go to so any comparisons made are apple-apples, both for our own tuning benefit and also for side by side comparisons between cars.

Personally, I wouldn't mind doing this twice a year, winter and summer.

Quite a few of us have adjustments to make and it may be handy to keep a common baseline.

Thoughts?

Sorry, but the results were too far from anything you could apply/compare them to, apart from more runs on their own machine.

Running again on the same machine was sort of the point.
I realise that the results we got yesterday are impossible to compare to any other measure, 1/4 mile included. Given the shop was run very professionally by muscle car sensitive staff with very good equipment and attitude it seems to make sense to go back there.

The other alternative is to each go to a different shop and get results that bear no comparison to eachother or find another shop willing and capable to put up with all of us, where we start all over again.

As a tuning exercise this could be a great way of making our own subtle improvements as well as have reliable side by side comparisons.
Same Dyno, same settings, same conditions for each of us.
I would love to run on a Dynapack too but there are so few of them around it looks to be impractical for us all to get on one within the same month let alone on the same day.

We need you Steve, not just as an observer but as a comparitive participant.
I saw no tyre issues yesterday, even when Jim ran on drag radials (I think), no smoke, no chunks.

just making sure the boys are ok Deano?Indeed - Without success. The first one retreated north when my rig started spinning on the dyno, & sole survivor packed up shop about hour mark #5 of trying to start the thing

Simply indecipherable run of bad luck aside, was great to get out there and keen to do so again. Agree with the logic of doing regularly at the same venue to see changes (clearly no 'bragging rights' on this particular dyno). And Chev's was exceptionally accomodating (very nearly long-term accomodation in my case! :p)

Was naturally massively bummed, not only about the issues in trying to get started (after changing the fuel pump, dizzy, coil, fuel rail and carby, was/is connection between ignition switch & coil letting us down) but that didn't get a second crack at a run.

As a couple noted, my vac secondaries didn't seem to open, (in fact 750carby wasn't opening all way with pedal travel) - Wasn't fussed as would make 830 annular loook all the better :D). But here's the chart anyhoo. I requested a printout with torque rather than air/fuel ratio (which said I was running quite rich). Nice to see that this donk is all about street-revs torque.. which will continue to be the case going forward:cool:

I concur with Colin and Deano, dyno guys were great and for the amount we forked over compared to how many hour these gave us with their hospitality and time, to go somewhere else would be a slap in the face :(

I think anyone interested in getting figures that they think are correct should maybe get their car dynoed elsewhere or independently at Chevs, but still come to this event for the fun and goodwill that an event like this provides.

Once again Colin, great work organising the event

Sorry, but the results were too far from anything you could apply/compare them to, apart from more runs on their own machine.

Any dyno not matter what kind,is only as good as the operator/person setting it up :( I know a guy out this way with a Dynapack and I wouldn't let him do my bicycle.

As you said Steve "apart from more runs on their own machine".It don't matter what sort of machine you are running on or what the end result is,it's a power finding exercise :) so why not continue to go to the same operator regardless of the machine?

You think correctly Colin :) I spoke with a few racers who assured me that if a heap of air was put into them and only a few runs were done, that all would be sweet :D

Purely talking equipment, just saying that if I were going to the effort of dyno-ing my car, I would want/expect results that have relevance to what the numbers actually are. Then with some prediction, results could be somewhat interchangeable between dyno and track. This dyno's results are purely "stand alone", as if they cowpower or elephantpower.:p I would be hoping for results that are at least close to 550lb/ft/sec. (-that's horsepower. :D)

Besides, I think repeatable results with subtle changes on a wheel to roller interface are not possible, let alone 6-12 months apart. You'll have to return with exactly the same pair of tires if you even hope to compare last season's apples to this season's. Plus, you'll need to know exactly what your tune up was back then also. I assume that yesterday's results were weather corrected?

I know you weren't commenting on the shop's hospitality, no issue there.

I understand that we want "accuracy" and I think that is best gained during your own dedicated session at Chevy's place or otherwise.
Effort? It really was no hassle on the day, Chevy's boys did all the work. It really was just the fun event it was meant to be.

The problem of repeatable results is the same no matter where you go, so we may as well all go to the same place at the same time and get the comparisons we simply can't get anywhere else unless we all hit Calder or Heathcote and such an event, though attractive is very difficult to arrange.
Even then traction issues and driver skill will play a far greater role in the results than any tyre to roller descrepancy ever could.

143mph is good for 9.5

Pretty much spot on Ben for a race car that weighs around 3200lbs ;)

Except for Cluxfords SMOVE which was filthy underneath :p oh and Jims Nova with mud slang around it he he he.

On a side note from Jim saying I dont want my car on a hoist itll be disgusting underneath and covered in ****....to seeing it up and I can say It was superb underneath especially for a driver!

In all seriousness though, what was wrong with it?

Rear uni was a bit suss, picked that up during the RWC process last year and replaced it.
Front uni was all good, supposedly. I know, one was bad, should have replaced both, lesson learnt....again.
Turns out one of the bearing cups was sloppy, you could push on the drive shaft in any direction without movement, except one.
A quick check would miss it, a careful check like the one Gary's guys did, picked it up.

Had to do some frantic ringing around to find a replacement, with much appreciated help from Roger, Guffer and others, $29 part and 15-20 minutes of careful belting with a big hammer, all was good.
CBC Bearings in Dandenong was the ONLY place that had a clue.
