Does the car have the same affect not being a genuine body and having all the stories to tell.

What you guys reckon? Wonder how much you would need to build a whole car from new parts?

I think it should be considered along the lines of replacing a panel like a guard... same thing, loses some of it's originality, but if it's beyond repair it's a step you have to take..
Mind you I'm talking about a every day run of the mill version of the car.. If it's a limited edition (Z/28, ex-pace car etc..) then I think you should do your best to repair the original…
When I got mine and found the faults I considered a replacement body.. But the whole VIN transfer issue kind of scares me… don't want to end up stuck with a very large and expansive boat anchor...
But still I think you can pick them up for about the 12K mark, not bad for a new body… if you can pick up a cheap donor car for the bits and pieces you'd be laughing...

I think would opt for the whole restore thing, with a rare model you would have to do the repair, too much history in the car to lose, especially with the prices of those cars once restored, watching some of the prices on the Barret Jackson auction this year was very surprising.
I can imagine the VIN process would be a nightmare, knowing our RTA procedures for the basic stuff being frustrating.
Would be cool but fresh 69 model shell ready to go.

Sorry to bring this back up, but was reading through the Vic Roads Rules, and i quote the vehicle standard information section 25 (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/1289150E-4BA9-4E13-84A8-DB80D34EE32E/0/vsi25motorvehiclebodyrepairs.pdf)..
"The practice of re-shellin a damaged vehicle by using either a body in white or a salvaged body shell is no longer allowed. Re-shelled vehicles will not be accepted for registration."
Essential that is what you would be doing.. reshelling a camaro... So unless you can argue that you are building a "new" car you wouldn't be able to register it in Vic (and i'd assume it would be the same for other states).
And even if they accept your argument of a 'new' car, would they then allow you to apply for a new VIN so you can register it? Not something i would want to go through after spending how many thousands of dollars.
I wonder if club rego would allow it.....
P.S. Vic Roads info site, where all the rules and regulations are confusingly kept.

You may be able to pass it as a kit car........
Who says they have to know about the new shell;) I can't see the harm done if its all done by legitimate means.....

See thats the beauty our Vin #'s rivet in LOL
Not sure about the kit car situation? Tell them to see GM
While we are on this topic I read a while back (can't remmeber where?) About a 4th gen camaro that they put 1st gen sheetmetal on it crazy huh? Now I see you can buy a new shell that is basically a 4th gen with 1st gen shape it takes strut front everything its in the latest car craft mag!

yeah the plates riveted in, but there are a fair few part numbers stamped all over the shell.. wonder if the new one has them? might be able to get away with it if you kept it quite i suppose...
As for the hybrid camaro.. would be interesiting.. new tech with a old school body....

Still being in Canada I have been reading alot of the US Muscle car mags, in the latest they have a small article on this,
http://www.goodmarkindustries.com/HomePage.html
This way looks to get around the VIN issue maybe
Details on the site;
"The difference between the Goodmark / Retro Rides cars and other so-called "crate bodies" is the fact that the first-gen car used in the build is a REAL car, with a REAL title and VIN. The finished car that results from this hybrid unibody foundation is still titled as a first-gen car, thereby retaining its collectable status. Goodmark's next project car, a 1969 Camaro, is going to be built by Retro Rides. "
Click on the Project cars link and check out the Camaro, Chevelle and Nova resto's they did and documented.
Also for any Mustang fans Dynacorn has finished there 67 Fastback Body.

Yeah the retro ones would be nice.. but would you class it as a 67,68,69 camaro or a new car?
And i'm sure well see a few of the mustang shells being built up before someone try's a camaro.. Will be good to see who does it first and gets it passed.. will set the foundation for everyone else in the future...

the more hassle the better IMO makes our cars worth more!
