Well after Birchy catching on that i've been up to something latey and being evasive about it, thought it was about time to come clean and spill the beans.

After running another couple of 10's at the Westernationals and getting booted out from racing i thought my short racing career was over as i've said many times before that i have no intention of putting a cage or roll bar in the Camaro. As my luck would have it, the same weekend this car was on ebay so gave the guy a call in Melbourne and when the ebay listing finished and it did'nt sell i jumped on a plane and made a quick visit and we struck a deal.

With a number of stories in the past 12-24months i've been hearing about cars being damaged in transit from the East - Mitch and Lyndsay included, i decided not to take the risk and drove to Melbourne to pick it up. After living in a truck for 7 days and 7,000km later it's now in my garage.

The car arrived in Australia in July 2009 from Tennessee - i have the green title from the last US owner. The cowl tag says it was an original Leman's blue car and was painted black around March 2008, not sure what colour it was prior to that. Previous owner raced it a couple of times at Calder in February

Specs are :
- all steel car apart from the 6" cowl hood, half chassis car built by Pro Fab Motorsports in California
- ladder bar rear end with coil overs, braced full spool 9" with Strange 35 spline axles, removable parachute and wheelie bars,
- 540ci Reher Morrison BB, dyno sheet says 872hp @ 7100rpm and 737ftlb torque @ 5500rpm on C-14 (14:1 comp), Dart block, Aluminium heads, roller cam, 1050 dominator, crank trigger kit, vacuum pump, coated Lemon's headers.
- Dedenbear powerglide with delay box, trans brake and line locker, 5800rpm dominator converter
- 10pt cage, kirkey seats, quick release steering wheel, polished tin work
- Heidt's 2" drop spindles, 4 wheel Wilwood disc brakes
- American Racing TrackStar wheels
- MagnaFuel Quickstar 500 pump and reg

Thanks for the comments. The car is pretty much ready to race as is but i'm not. Need to upgrade my S/ST license to a UDL, buy a race suit and a new helmet, if i already had a UDL and the required safety gear it would be very tempting to take it down for the last Fast Friday this month and do my licensing passes. But not to be so it wont see the track until next season. The plan at this stage is to get my licensing passes out of the way in September ready to race the Fast Friday series from October. There is also a small list of things i want to do to the car as well to improve it a bit and finish it off to my liking

I did take the wife for a quick spin down the road here at work when we unloaded it last Sunday, and yes, she crapped herself and i was only taking it very easy :D Got some video of it driving but don't know how to load it on here from the "My Videos" folder i saved it in

Oh yeah they've got all sorts of ways to extract $'s from you in SA
Some of the cameras are combination of red light and speed so they can get you twice in one hit, they've got 2 of these in Pt Augusta. (lucky you weren't speedng as well, not that I am condoning running red lights)

TUFF68
07-07-2010, 10:05 PM
Chris, it's the same piece of crap plastic one from Classics, just gave it the TUFF 68 treatment by painting it all black.

The left hand side headlight surround was a bastard to make fit - not sure if the front 1/4 panel had anything to do with that though?. The holes in the grille for the top molding were out of alignment so i needed to elongate a few of them, the diameter of the holes in the bottom of the grille for the lower molding were pre drilled too small so had to redrill them all to fit, and the 2 middle holes were'nt even close to lining up.

I put a new grille kit on my other Camaro a few years ago which i bought from Rick's and it was a much better fit than the one from Classics, bolted straight in with no drama's at all. Should of paid the extra and got another one from Rick's again, but........

Went down to the Motorplex today with a group of other racers who hired the track for the day and did licensing passes. No problems with the ANDRA guy's and then got a few more laps in the arvo as well. Best time for the day was 9.35@144mph, with a 9.37 and few 9.4s all between 143-145mph.

Great stuff there Marty.. :D Very consistant times. That's good.

So, how does the licencing work? Watching the vid, I would guess a 60ft shut off, then 1000ft, then a full pass?
Also, how does the chute feel? Does it really remind you that your seat belts are on? In TF, they say there are more Gs felt when pulling the chute than launching.

The front lifts very quickly. It's too quick and unloading the rears when it reaches full droop? Looks like you've got great traction though. What gears?

Hey Marty, awesome stuff, car looks and sounds sweet brother and I reckon the way it drove those 8's can't be far away! Me and my big mouth, hope the old green girls got enough to make a show of it! Was it just the one lane brother? if it was did they do any track prep? A few outlaw boys are on for some testing and have asked us to make up numbers in a month or so...just thought to ask before we go so we can workout what the go will be.
Again well done man, to step into a brand new combo, license and make some great passes is never as easy as some would think...all the best and see at the track, George.

TUFF68
24-08-2010, 06:27 PM
Thanks for the comments guy's, to say i was happy to run a 9.35 on it's 1st full pass during licensing is a bit of an understatement. :p

Licensing consist's of a blind fold test first, sit in the car with harness on, helmet on, gloves on and a blind fold on. Need to hit the brakes, punch the shifter in neutral, kill the ignition, pull the shoot (optional), unbuckle out of harness, and get out of the car - all very quickly

On the track, 1st pass is a launch - no further than 330ft, 2nd pass is half track and pull the shoot. He made me do this again as i put my foot on the brake before the finish line instead of just coasting through. To give you an idea of the difference between this car and my street car, on the 2nd half track pass i ran a 10.90 pulling the shoot at half track and coasting over the finish line which was quicker than my PB of 10.94 in the street car  The difference i noticed is launching off the trans brake at 5600rpm compared to off the foot brake at only 2800rpm and then the top end speed over the last 50mt. 3rd pass is a full track pass and using the shoot and he wanted me to use the trans brake on this pass as well. You certainly do feel the shoot pull you up, nowhere near as many G's as a top fueller i would image though

Track prep was only on 1 lane and it was ok, but could of been a bit better, especially as the track itself was quite cool (was only 17deg on sunday)

As for the way the car performed i would of been happy to run 9.5s, so over the moon to run what it did. Best it ran at Calder was a 9.46. There should be a bit more in it still as i was shifting at 7000rpm instead of 7200rpm, it was running a little on the rich side as i was using c14 instead of the roo16 the previous owner tuned it on. Once i figure out how to get the FAST air/fuel meter to work properly we can play with the tune a bit  would be wrapped to get it to run a 9.2 or a 9.1

4.11 gears Steve, was crossing the line just on 7000rpm. Have a spare set of 4.56 gears as well.

Paul, only way the streeter will be allowed back down the track is with a roll cage or if i change the motor :( i have been asked a few times already if the streeter will be used as the tow car though

Last Friday at the drags we mounted a mates video camera inside the car, was the backup camera as his fancy one with the fancy wide angle lens which would of given a much better view did'nt want to play the game, kept switching itself off due to the vibration so we had to settle for the not so fancy backup camera. Anyway here's what it looks like on the first pass of the night from in the car on a 9.43 @ 143mph pass, goes for 11 or so mins but most of it is getting towed back to the pits so only need to watch the first 4 mins.

Last Friday at the drags we mounted a mates video camera inside the carNice Marty - Got my heartrate up just watching (with flashbax of the year since I popped by 1/4mile cherry - Albeit a tad less frenetic:rolleyes:).

Since I have fewer buttons on my steering wheel & handles on my roof, can you confirm what they are? Punting button as line-locker so front wheels don't creep & handle is parachute?? If so are they all released this way? Guess easier to find than a button in an emergency, but still seems somewhat ..er ..labour intensive :p

Hope you're enjoying! Keep it coming (oh, & invest in some video editing software... Haha :D)

Key Ring Camera (http://www.performanceforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67258708)

The boys are getting outstanding results with $25+ Key ring Camera's duct tapped to race cars, go carts, motorbikes etc.

I would start with the cheap one, then move up from there.

You could tape one on your front lip, on your roof and on your boot. 3 Angles of the run. SWEET!

With the drag season finished we pulled the driveline out and stripped down the engine. Very happy to find everthing is as per Reher-Morrison's Invoice from 2005 when the engine was built. The car was'nt raced much by the previous owners, my 46 passes this season is more than double the amount of passes it had done previously since the engine was built. We knew the engine had sat for an extended period of time and there are signs in the bores that this is true. The gearbox had to come out as the converter is not looking the best so will have to go back to Dominator to get cut open, will get the gearbox serviced while it is out as well. The diff came out as i want to put the 4.56 gears back in it instead of the current 4.11.

8902

8903

8904
A lot of the parts have the Reher-Morrison name on them including the pushrods
8905

8906
Manley rods with name
8907
Rod bearings were very good, this one is the worst of them
8908
reading the plugs was telling us #1 & #2 were running richer than the other 6 pots and the intake runners and pistons confirmed this. Here's #1 piston were you can see fuel - the red stuff - just above the ring
8909

TUFF68
25-04-2011, 10:53 PM
Scat crank
8910

8911
here you can just see a brown line in the bore, caused by the fuel when an engine sits for an extended period of time
8912
an easy way to move a heavy diff around on your own, put some wheels on it and wheel it around by the ladder bars like a wheelbarrow. A bit hard to turn with a full spool though..
8913
Dominator converter that used to be all green - exessive heat is not a good friend to converter's

Bearings look really good. Are they going back in? They look good enough to..
Whats the plans for the freshen? Just rings & hone?

What block is that? Not a GM is it? Has Gen 6 style lifter bosses and a Mk IV style filter boss.

Any ideas as to why you've got fuel in 1 & 3?

..and I never seen a converter get hot enough to loose it's paint.. Wow!

Block is a Dart 'Big M' Steve and yes it has a MK IV filter adapter. Will probably change to a remote mount for the systems 1 as there's not a lot of room to get the filter out because of the exhaust and it spill's the oil everywhere. I hate spilling oil, especially when it's running down your arm

Have'nt decided yet on re-using the bearings, but will go for new rings and a hone.

Not sure why 1 & 3 are getting more fuel, will send R-M an email soon with a bunch of questions and see what they have to say about it. Here's a pic of the manifold where you can also see evidence of extra fuel in #1 runner on the right

Getting on the transbrake a little too early probably contributed to the converter getting too hot. Have worked out that on my 9.14 pass i must of left the line somewhere north of 6000rpm instead of the usual 5600rpm which would explain the .20sec difference in the 60ft time. I did read on the R-M website that the converter should be 4-500rpm higher than the peak torque rpm of the engine. This engine makes peak torque at around 5500rpm so really i should have a 5900-6000rpm converter instead of the 5600rpm that i currently have.

It was suggested the same to me regarding the converter speed. 4-500 more than peak tq and that means I now have a 5200. A Dominator also. No trans brake though.
I always thought that stall speed was to be at tq peak and any higher was a waste of useable power.

1 & 3 sounds like the left primary booster on the carb is way overly rich (like dripping), but I wonder how that could be.. Perhaps a blocked/dirty high speed air bleed and/or emulsion tube restricting it of air I wonder.

Also, how do you access the 2 additional head bolts? Do bolts pass down through the intake ports, then you plug them..
..or do bolts screw up into the floor of the intake from the block's bosses in the valley?
Maybe the guide plate/s is hiding the access hole/s I was expecting to see.

Just answered my own question!
I see the studs in the heads in the above picture. :D
Better idea than the GM ZL1..

Good point regarding the air bleeds, carby will be taken apart for a good clean before going back on so will keep an eye on that to see if they were blocked.

My guess is that the 4-500 more rpm is to allow for a slight drop in revs when the car actually takes off, this will put the rpm right in the peak torque to accelerate off the line rather than leaving the line 4-500rpm below peak torque...

Access for the 2 extra bolts is from the valley

Informative report on your freshen up Marty, that converter picture is an eye opener on how much heat it got.

Just realised i ****ed up in my earlier post, it's #1 and #2 cylinders that are running richer, not #3 :o

Small update, got the converter back the other day all fixed and looking brand new again. Excessive heat melted the stator, new bearings and bush and raised the stall another 400rpm, so will now be leaving the line at 6000rpm which should result in some quicker 60ft times :) They found alot of metal in the converter so on Dominator's recommendation will have to replace the tranny cooler as well as they reckon it is very hard to flush out all the metal. DTM has'nt opened up the gearbox as yet so expecting him to see a fair bit of metal in the filter as well.

Block has been honed, crank checked, heads checked, valve springs checked - all good. Another phone call tonight to R-M and some engine parts should be on their way very soon.

Picked up the diff today as well, 4.56 pro gears installed.

Well done Marty on your new pb on Saturday night.:D
Also mate happy birthday for Saturday.

Thanks Ang, apart from the -.001 red light in the semi final I could'nt have asked for a better birthday.

Here's some pics of what a melted stator looks like. After melting it again 2 more times in the last month we have finally fixed the problem. Changed the input shaft on the gearbox to a Vasco hi-flo one and after 9 passes on the weekend the converter is all good. The last 2 meets I have also been using a 6200rpm converter from Allfast with a 2 step which has helped improve 60ft times. Big thanks to Simon for his help as well.

Now just have to fix the rear end problem as it's turning the tyre's off the line and with the right weather conditions will be knocking on the door of an 8sec pass.

very cool Marty, congrats on the pb mate.

Does the Vasco hi-flo have a larger diameter rifle-drilled oil gallery or something?
It's amazing the amount of sh!t that converters have to go through.

Steve, the shaft section between the splines on a high flow input shaft is thinner, allowing more oil flow out of the converter.

Good to finally get a chance to see the car in action last night, appeared to be launching pretty well. Did drop by the pit area & had a good look over her, impressive :) didn't get much of a chance to chat as you were with someone else then off for another run.

Hey Ross, sorry mate I remember now but did'nt recognise you at the time as I was chatting to Graham (Ham69) when you stopped by. As for being impressive, at that stage of a 2 day meet the car is looking pretty dusty. Got a bit of time before the next meet on Boxing day so will hit with some Menzerna FF and then a couple of coats of Naviwax to make it really shine ;)
