Hi All

Thought I would start a new "build up" thread for the Chevelle that I have just started and is already consuming all of my spare time.

I had never expected to do a nut & bolt build up but when I bought the 572 (on a whim) I thought well now is the time !

After removing the sill panels there was rust in the bottom of the front guards so off came the front.

The guys at American Online Imports have had a RHD rack assembly made for me in the US and I have the Detroit Speed front and rear suspension with coilovers on the way.

A moser 9inch housing with 35 spline Strange centre with a 3:7 detroit locker and Baer brakes front and rear are also on the way.

The 572 has had a cam change and the heads "looked at" so I am hoping for around the 700 HP mark (around the same as the 396 in my green 68) but in my opinion there is nothing that comes near a high & fast revving small block but I have a 502 in my 78 and now the 572 so I am beginning to warm to the old slow revving truck motor !!! :D:D

A month ago I fitted a new black interior from Original Parts Group which was my first attempt at trimming and using a sewing machine, and then removed it all including the roof lining, nothing like doing things twice :o

Greg from Stripped Bare (tonner on this forum) is Diamond Blasting the shell next week and then it is "Game On". I am undecided on a colour but some suggestions are blue but as bright as the green 68, black with flames is what Sam the painter wants to paint it (same guy who painted the green one) or a charcoal grey with black stripes.

I have nearly finished the RHD conversion, with the firewall completed, pedal assembly (unmodified just moved over) and I am now fabricating a steel dash in the same style of the original one which is plastic. I can now appreciate the work that Blackout Steve has done to his 69 dash as every corner etc has to be bent, welded etc., sometimes making 2 or 3 of the same piece to get it right.

I have attached some pics and will update reularly ;);)

I've had plenty of fun in the snake pit without any major damage (even won $1750 in prize money along the way) so figure i'll quit while i'm ahead and before my luck runs out - eg. we've all seen Jamie's mishap:eek:. As for retirement from drag racing, well i'm banned from the Motorplex until i get a roll cage which is'nt going to happen, so that's permanent. But my racing career is'nt over though ;)

Sorry for the hijack Chris.....

No dramas Marty

Detroit Speed sell a roll cage for a Camaro that aren't that expensive !!

But I am sure that if you build a dedicated "drag car" you will be able to hurt it that little bit more and get heaps more enjoyment out of it.

Call in sometime for a chat

Hi Guys

Does anyone know a company that can pad and vinyl shrink cover a dash pad ??

I have started to make a top for the dash but would like to get it vacuum formed like the original.

Hey Chris, great to see this is underway mate. At the rate you are going, it will be finished before mine. Can't wait to see this bad boy finished. For what it's worth, I checked out Classic Auto Upholstery a little while ago to do my 68 dash and I got quoted $550.

Marty, good to see you had that fun with your car mate and made it out in one piece. I look forward to going for a cruise (sometime this decade I hope!)

Sorry for the hijack Chris.....

ANDRA says you can go with a rollbar (4 points) down to 10.000, no need for a cage. You can get most engineers and your state authority to pass a rollbar for a street car (making the assumption that WA is at least similar to NSW).

Looks great Chris! I like the part you're sticking with DSE again! :)

Got a question for the steering rack, does AOI sell the power steering pump and hoses or is that something you have to source yourself?

And lastly is that Austrian/euro chap still doing the welding for the 4 links etc?

Hi Muggz, long time no see !!!

I am sticking with the DSE stuff as I reckon that if the Chevelle handles half as good as the Camaro I will be rapt.

I bought my power steering pump and brackets from Mario at American Online Imports, the bracket was a Zoop's one and fitted up well.

Han's is still doing welding, panel beating etc but I know he is pretty well booked out until August, give me a call if and when you would like it done and I will see what I can do for you, we have 3 conversions on the go from May so that will keep us busy. pm with my contact details sent

Well Guys

I have been spending some time in the shed lately !!

The Detroit spped front end, the RHD rack and the motor and gearbox are fitted up.

The Detroit Speed/Moser rear end will be here on Tuesday so it is full steam ahead.

I hope to have the chassis completed with fuel lines, exhaust, brake lines etc all fitted up by the end of the month.

I have finished fabricating the dash, pedals, brake booster and master cylinder , steering column, hand brake assembly, so a lot of the fiddly bits are now over !! as well as cleaning up the dirty greasy bits (which I hate)

The body has now been stripped again ready for blasting next week.

then it is time to POR15 all of the interior and then Dynamat it all, so at the moment everything is on target for paint around the end of May.

Cheers CHRIS

I'd lean towards the bright blue you mentioned so that it matches your other cars, but what would I know, they aren't my cars.

Top work on the build so far, hopefully I can get mine done as fast but i doubt it.

I am still leaning towards the bright blue, but the painter wants to paint it candy apple black which is a very dark burgundy, I might paint the firewall in both colours and choose from there.

If you need any help with your project give me a call.

*UPDATE*

Things have been a bit slow this month as I have been to Phuket and I am still waiting for the Moser/DSE rear end to arrive (any day now).

The front and rear ends have been fitted for the last time.

The RHD dash is complete with Dakota Digital gear, photos soon when it is painted up.

The body is with Greg (tonner) being Diamond Blasted at the moment.

The doors, trunk, hood are all repaired and primed, so just the body to prep now and 2 rear quarter bottom halves to fit (this week) and then off to the painter

Cheers CHRIS

Missing In Action !!!!!!

Moser ginned around making it, it arrived at Detroit Speed last friday, so I guess they will take a few days to add their brackets etc then paint it.

The Baer brakes are at Detroit Speed also and they will all ship together.

I got an email last week saying that the rear end had been sent and got all excited, when it got here it was only the 4 bar, coilovers and swaybar. Oh well something more to look forward to.

At least that will give me the next 2 weeks to get the 454 into your car !!!! hopefully finished before the get together on the 16th !!!

After playing with Paul's (randa67) car for the past couple of weeks it was time to do some more to the Chevelle.

After diamond blasting there were a few rust spots that needed attention :-

Both the front & back screen frames, both bottom of the cowls, trunk floor, tops of the rear quarters below the windows as well as the bottom of the rear quarters and the inner panels behind them.

I have attacked them this week and should finish all of the body next week then time to fit all the panels up and adjust the gaps etc then pull her apart again for painting around the doors, trunk, hood, firewall and under the car.

Still haven't decided on a colour but I am leaning towards candy apple red with fine metal flakes there is a new Toyota that has it according to the painter.

WOW, thats a fair bit of work there Chris... Makes it look worse than it really is... Best to get it all whilst you have the opportunity I guess...

Yes Mitch there were a few pin holes here & there, the windows were the worst, it is easier to make & replace new frames than to worry if the rust will appear next to the repair.

It is also quicker & easier to replace larger parts of the panel than trying to patch little areas i.e the truck floor.

Once the repairs are hand filed and filled they will be better than new, the pics are showing them at their roughest

Overall the car is very solid apart from the normal problems due to lack of maintenance like cleaning out the cowl vents, door drain holes and so on.

Before the car was stripped I knew there was a problem with the rear window corners as the mouldings didn't fit right and that was one of the main reasons I stripped the car, I must have too much time on my hands lol :rolleyes:

It is all good fun and the car should last another 40 years once it is done

Hi Guys, Update on the Chevelle

Diff has arrived and now fitted along with the Baer brakes and the rest of the DSE suspension.

All rust repairs are finished and the rear quarters are also finished.

The underneath has been painted with the Raptor ute liner paint.

The inside of the doors, body and firewall are to be painted in the final colour tomorrow.

Once that is done I will put the body back on the chassis at the weekend and can then start fitting up the body and then off to the painter by the middle of July.

Well Guys, latest update

We have now spent over 350 hours on the body and it is in red primer !!

The firewall has been painted in the final colour so that I could put the body back on the chassis.

The brakes are now finished and plumbed and bled, I am waiting on the steering shafts which should be here next week.

We still have to block the body and then apply the base coat then block again and then apply the pearl topcoat, block again and then add the black stripes, block again and then clear it and then you guessed it block it again and then the final clear coat.

So there is still heaps to do but by next weekend all of the door jambs, under the hood and inner guards should be painted, fitted back up (for the fifth time) and then the outside can be finished the week after.

I hope to have it completed and driving by the end of August.

Cheers CHRIS

I hate to say it Paul but I like the Chevelle as much or more than the Camaro as there aren't as many around. Plus the way it is heading it should be as nice or better than the Camaro.

I am looking at a 70 Camaro at the moment so that may be my next project.

I have had an offer on the green one yesterday and I nearly accepted it but my son Simon has talked me out of it as he made me realise that the reason I was buiding these cars was to give my 3 boys one each when I had had enough. as you have probably guessed I enjoy buiding them more than driving them

It is about time we sold yours Paul and built another one from scratch !!!!

Cheers CHRIS

All that is left now is the exhaust from the headers back and then the wiring. After all the fitting up is done the painter will slice and polish the paint and then I will give it a full detail and hopefully all ready to cruise by the 15th Sept

The Chevelle is now driveable and I have done about 100 ks in it, off to the wheel aligner today

The 572 fired up first try and after 3 years of sitting around had no noises, leaks and idled like a dream

Had a small problem with the power steering reservoir leaking but all good now.

Just need to get some miles up on it and sort the gremlins (if any) but from early indications this thing is going to go hard !!! traction is a problem, even in 3rd gear at 120ks it breaks loose !!

Once again the Detroit Speed gear has turned a "boat" into a "slotcar" and for the first time I am running a 4 spd auto (2004r from Art Carr) and cruising at 100 ks the tacho reads 2100 rpm with a 3:7 diff ratio.

I will post some pics soon after it has had it's photo shoot by Jordan

The car is gorgeous in the flesh and sadly the pics don't do the paint colour justice - it looks awesome and the 572 sounds as tough as nails too ! :)

Thanks to Chris and his Simon for their help and their patience with me during the shoot :)

After a '70 Chevelle, he's reached the pinnacle of the GM stable. Going for a Camaro is 36 steps backwards.

The Chevelle performed better in the handling department than I expected with it keeping up with the Camaro in most corners and round abouts but kicks its tail out a lot more than the Camaro, but like Rob says, it makes it more fun. Have to get as many miles as I can on it as I go to court on the 7th Sept and I am expecting to lose my licence for at least 6 months :mad:
