Cheers Mick.

Thanks mate,

As for plans, hmmm lots! Get rid of the purple on the seats, monster tacho is already gone, custom dash panel, centre console, TKO600 manual and 9" diff, air con for hot qld summer cruising, bigger width wheels (especially the front because i like corners) bigger brakes, rack and pinion steering, upgraded suspension...think thats about it for now..... but no doubt it will grow.

Congrats Rowan! Must be pumped. Bad ass ride with loads of potential to get it how you want - especially with that premium list! Looks like a long-termer which is ace to see. Hope feels good having something to fill the torry space in the garage & look forward to seeing the progress & another 2nd gen on USM!

thanks guys, I'm really excited about the car. going to be a tough street car with some mild circuit duties - but not too serious so its still a bit of a handful. The torana got too serious and wasn't much fun driving on the street. And yeah its here to stay....

Now I just need some parts to get it on the road....

Anyone know best place for all the wiper gear (arms, motor, nozzles, pump etc.) I have been looking on classic industries but if someone has some lying around i'd take em

Also how do I tell if the sunvisors are 1 or 2 pin?

AGGRO
07-02-2010, 10:47 AM
I got no idea what pump it is sorry mate.

I cant tell about feeling through headliner. My roof has nothing...no headliner, no rear view mirror or sunvisors so I need to order some for rego - and to finish it off, just need to know which ones to order

08-02-2010, 07:00 AM
No headliner, even easier to tell. If you have the center holder there will be two holes in the middle of the roof near the screen. Rear view mirror is attached to the windscreen. I have a set of sunvisors for the middle holder style. They are brown and would need to be vinyl sprayed. Dont rely on the parts stores for sending you the correct sunvisors. I had three sets sent to me from Ecklers and each were incorrect. Do a search of 73 camaros and you will probably get an idea of what it should have. Either way, your car is heavily modified so having the correct visors is probably not that big a deal.

woohoo, my first order is here, nice and fast. Order was processed thursday morning local time and was shipped that day, landed in aus saturday arvo at syd airport and here at 7am this morning. That is my new classic industries dash pad and rear view mirror.

AGGRO
31-03-2010, 08:51 PM
ok finally got off my arse and did something on the car.

Installed my new dash pad. and made up my own custom guage panel.

This is how I started

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p203/VK_Torana/46GRO/P1040537.jpg

Then I trialled it and tweaked it in the car

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p203/VK_Torana/46GRO/P1040538.jpg

Then I measured all the holes up and had it punched out at work (advantage of being sheet metal fabricators)

and this is the result of the punched panel and cleaned up

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p203/VK_Torana/46GRO/P1040542.jpg

and this is what it will look like with the guages in

http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p203/VK_Torana/46GRO/P1040543.jpg

Now I just need to fold the sides up and then get it powdercoated satin black.

Cost - $30
Labour - 6-10 hours

pretty happy with that

Did a bit more work on this last night. I've got new crystal headlights that i bought off ebay. I went to put them in but they hit on the headlight bucket because of the shape of the housing. I'm opening up the holes today at work so they should go in tonight. I also put my rear seat belts in last night. And changed from the mega shifter to a hurst pro matic.

same as here in QLD, will post pics of them soon. the bottom part of the rears are just a straight bolt in I have to make a plate to hold the top part for the 'sash' bit of the belt.

Guages were $800 to my door from Summit. Better than the $1300 they want in aus

---------- Post added at 08:53 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:19 AM ----------

I'm having a dilemma guys and hope you can help me out.

On my torana I had 17" billets with 235/40's on the front and it rode like a b***h!!! it was so hard and wasnt really much fun to drive. My tyre guy said that the only way to stop that would be to fit a taller tyre on the front to give it some more cushioning in the sidewall.

I know these shape camaros look pretty darn good on 17's but should I stick with 15's and keep the oldschool tough look?

AUSCAMARO
28-04-2010, 09:58 AM
Yep, your car would definately suit the old school 15" look with big tall rubber...

RAW454
28-04-2010, 03:17 PM
Couldn't be more of a personal preference query there Rowan :) For me, the first thing I wanted to do when I got my car was ditch the bogan Centerlines for some pro-tour 18s. But the tough old-school look grew on me massively. So am running this combo for a couple of years, then when bored of it, will go more modern with all aesthetics inc enginebay (I'm calling it Phase 2).

If you really want an opinion, I'd go old-school chunkies for sure. Will be a change from the Torry's ride experience, get used to the new beastie in more comfort, allow time to investigate the HUGE number of bigger-rim options out there... and looking tough as hell in the meantime! Plus will always be a market for HQ-pattern 15s if decided to resell. That's just one man's opinion though...

AGGRO
28-04-2010, 07:03 PM
I am thinking the same as both of you guys as well, but I saw a camaro in super chevy with 17" vintage wheels and it looks pretty good.

does anyone know where the breather pipe is supposed to run from the fuel tank? mine was sitting where the tailpipes go and was moved and is just sitting behind the diff and fuel pours out everytime i go around a corner...

also does anyone know what size bolts are used for the wiper motor? I have gotten 2 different size bolts now and neither fit.

Thanks Rowan

71RS
30-04-2010, 08:53 AM
There are a bunch of pipes coming out of the tank. I think three follow the body up over the diff and connect to a canister that is fitted behind the rear seat. You should be able to see it from inside the trunk. The original return line came from the charcoal canister next to the washer bottle.

Take the wiper motor to supercheap. They have a bolt and nut rack with the different sized examples so you can test fit.

AGGRO
30-04-2010, 10:12 AM
nah that wont work. The threaded part that it screws into is in the firewall...thats where I am having issues as I am just guessing what size.

Hmmm i have no canister behind the seat....or charcoal canister next to the washer bottle.

I have another question too. with the tail lights when i put the parkers on all 4 light up (like they should) but when i brake all 4 light up (should it be only 2 or is 4 correct??) and when i flick on the indicators both the inner and outer flash on the same side. If this isnt correct which one is supposed to flash?

Thanks

71RS
30-04-2010, 03:33 PM
sorry about the motor was thinking it attached from inside the cowl for some reason. Maybe just keep trying different bolt sizes. NPT?

Canister space should be there in the rear bulkhead. Its a retangular steel canister. Maybe removed for weight at the drags but the hole for it will be obvious. Might need to take out the seat. Wouldnt worry about the front canister. You should have multiple pipes coming out of the tank on the left and right. Maybe you can just loop the line to one of those ports.

Your car is wired up and operates exactly like mine. Dont touch it and worry about it later. Same with the wheels, just tick the boxes and get it on the road! Worry about the rest later.

AGGRO
30-04-2010, 03:49 PM
there are lots of holes there, but no canister. It was just looped around and sitting under the car but was moved for the exhaust, so now I have to put it somewhere where it wont leak.

is that legal how it is wired up though? I have an auto sparky coming out next week to wire up my guages so if its incorrect it'll be easier for him to do it now.

I was chattin to a RWC guy around the cnr from my place about the rear stop light and indicator on the 'bird and mine does the same things as your camaro. He more or less said if thats the way it is I'll pass it and this guy does alot of 'musclecars', same scenario as the mustangs. The firebird was originally a 350/350 combo but now has a 400/muncie with no reverse light setup but provisions for it in the rear lense but he's not too worried about that either! L02 is done...just doing bits and pieces to it now then should be on the road.

Bit of an update, had my auto electrician out on the weekend. He took my dash panel and guages away during the week and came back with them all wired up to 3 simple plugs. Spent a few hours running some wires in the car and changing the plugs and also fixing up a few more things for me.

Here are some pics of the dash not in the car.

Gotta be happy with that Rowan. Bloody nice work!

Out of curiosity, are you specifically not a fan of the current Welds?

Touched on it before, but my 2c would be to swap the runners for some wider fronts & enjoy cruising for a while whilst sussing new rim options. The Welds suit it SO well already & you can then can take some more time investigating (and most likely shipping from the States). Could even then try bolting up a mate's 17s to see how the ride compares etc before settling on size.

Plus I'd be seriously keeping some coin aside for a new diff before new shoes... (I can vouch for what a BBC does to a 10-bolt :o)

If you can't bear to look at them, then different story and I'll get back in my box.;):D

AGGRO
05-05-2010, 12:38 PM
Deano, nah your right mate, any perspective is worth looking at.

I don't mind the welds on it now, but because the car will see some track time i don't think they would work too well with cooking the brakes from lack of ventilation. The cheapest i found for a pair of 15x7 welds was 380 each plus freight. Then i'd need tyres too. So around 1200 dollars for the two fronts. Then when i get some new rims i'd be spending another 2500 which doesn't really make much sense to me.

The only way i'd do that is if my other set was for racing on only and the welds on the street.

I got a price yesterday for some torq thrust d's in 15x8 for under 1600 thats in aus and it would cost me around the same from summit with freight and tax on it.

And i know about the ten bolt too. I am nervous about it. Brakes, 12 bolt and manual conversion will be next on the list.

So around 1200 dollars for the two fronts. Then when i get some new rims i'd be spending another 2500 which doesn't really make much sense to me. You're forgetting resale buddy. Is only the 'changeover' price you have to consider, not the purchase price ;) As said, there is always a market for HQ-pattern Weld/Centerline/Cragars. Particularly front runners, so easy to offload at same price you bought them for. Nothing to lose by creating an AV8 post for anybody wanting to swap... Anyway, is something to think about. Keep up the great progress

yeah Deano i thought about the retail, but when I asked earlier about selling the welds the consensus was around $800 - $1000 for a set. plus whatever the front runners sell for (guessing another 3-400 ish at a very rough guess)

So I still gotta come up with the other $2200 or so for new rims. Whereas if I sell the current wheels for $1000 I only need to come up with $1500. And that $700 difference will pay for my brakes, which means the diff will be closer to being swapped lol

other thing I thought about was some of those Ridler wheels from VPW.....only $180 each.....plus freight and tyres

guages are 3 3/8" stewart warner for the big ones and 2 1/16" for the small ones.

nice one mate, had a set of them on a two door 55 chev, ive done some reasearch into this vent tube today, on 1970 models the vent tube runs from the tank to the front of the car next to the booster and terminates there with a one way valve to let air in, or you block the vent tubes off and run a vented petrol cap.

AGGRO
15-05-2010, 01:43 AM

ok, some more progress made today - finally. Got my senders for low oil pressure and high water temp warning lights. Also picked up a catch can because my car is leaking oil when I drive it. Seems the sump is pressurising and seeping out of a few spots. I tightened up the sump bolts too just to make sure they were tight.

Also bolted on my horn and notched out a slot in the quarter trim panels for seatbelt clearance as shown below and then showing the trim panels back in place.

Rowan, grab a bit of edge piping (rubber) to finish off that slot you made for the seat belt and it will look factory. Clark rubber sell it.

AUSCAMARO - thanks for the tip - that will look a bit nicer. I was hand filing for about an hour to get them all neat and straight haha.

Cluxford - waiting on weld's to sell as they will cover my tyres (ie. I dont have any money atm haha) But as soon as they do, running maxxis 235/60/15's on the front on a 15x7 rim and 265/50/15 on the rear on a 15x8 rim. We are trying the 265's first and seeing how much clearance I still have on these rims as to whether the 295's in the maxxis range will fit or if i have to relocate the shock to the inside of the leaf spring shackle.

Gav - PM sent.

Is it possible to get some from wreckers from a new car and put them in?

Thanks guys,

Chevval - I was originally going with them but was told another guy could do it cheaper. I saw Gasoline Alley on friday and they reckon next wednesday it will be all good to go.

Chev 1973, I bought my belts from Gasoline alley retractable lap/sash fronts and lap/sash rears. I am not sure about buying any from wreckers - speak to a certifying engineer in your state to make sure that is ok. If not places like Autobarn stock Klippan brand belts.

Scott, Gasoline Alley should be able to do my roady as well, if they cant/wont i'll be in touch. Is he mobile or do I have to take it to him?

No chris, not getting rid of it for a profit, just trying to make room for a race car and trailer. I love the car and wish it could stay but need it to go to pay for the race car, and thats been my biggest dream is to race cars and one has popped up at the right price and time unfortunately.

I could stick with it but it would take a fair bit of money to change it to be race ready. Been a hell of a ride though and super tough.

Didn't think it would be spotted this quickly though, only went up wednesday night.

What sort of race car, there is a car in Qld right now that if I had idle cash would be sitting in my garage.

Well just thought i'd give a bit of an update on the car. Just been getting it running better and smoother which is almost all sorted now. Changed fuel filter as there was a heap of crap in the carby, so cleaned that out too with new needles and seats. Had an issue with one of the ignition leads touching the exhaust and melting it causing it to run on 7 cylinders, so had a new lead made up to suit. Then i changed the thermostat to help it cool better and thats where the troubles started.

I snapped one the bolts for the housing and it was a really soft bolt so the ezy outs that i bought that night didn't work so had to buy a heli boil kit on friday. Then had the radiator flushed and ready and all tuned up, drained the radiator, put the thermostat in and the housing on and snapped it in half. At 5.30pm friday arvo.

Got a new housing saturday morning and fitted that up only for the lip on the thermostat to be too big and wouldn't seal so swapped back to the old one but drilled the holes out for better flow and popped on the new cap and its all good now. Had it out at lakeside on sunday. Finally.

So thats all for now. Haha.

ok after a long hard think and some time with unsuccessful lookers at the car I have decided to shelve the plans for racing for a few years and save for a house - but keep the camaro and enjoy it some more.

So the short list of things to do to it over the next 18 months.

Twin thermo fans - currently has a metal blade fan with NO shroud - cant really drive it for long periods because it doesnt keep cool = not fun

Stiff front springs, front and rear swaybars and some chassis stiffening - the front is SOOOOO soft and has no swaybars at all so cannot corner quicker than 20km/h = not fun

rear disc brake upgrade - drums equal bad. Especially after having a 1300kg car with 330mm front rotors with twin piston calipers

better carby - the edelbrock 750 isn't cutting it and how it is set up is causing it to keep hot at idle.

Better manifold

Big heads - seems I got dudded on the heads and they are stock truck heads - so looking at options here for cast or ally.

and looking at a few other things to tidy the car up in the process

I did check the casting number. The figures seemed pretty ordinary.

Thanks Darren, i'll speak to my engine guy and see if that will work. Its got a 750 edelbrock on there now but its rubbish. If he says that will be fine i'll grab it off you.

ok seems the issues with the motor go further than I first thought.

Did a comp test last weekend and all came out around 130-145psi, so its a stock motor with a big cam and big pipes and a over jetted 750. No wonder I am having issues with it.

I did consider selling it again but I will stick with it and get a few things done to get it driveable and nice.

I have just ordered a new MSD pro billet dizzy, RPM air gap manifold, griffin alloy radiator, baffled valve covers and a few other bits and pieces. Not to mention my springs that are already on their way.

Within the next 12 months it will be getting the body stripped and rust repaired and re-sprayed (haven't decided on colour as of yet) and the engine rebuilt with some higher compression, alloy heads and the manifold and radiator wont go in till then either (just bought them while the dollar is awesome). I will also be tackling the suspension to get it rolling alot less in the corners.

Just saw this Chris.... Bit off topic but that's my mates car...

We call it the ROTUS!! Done a fair bit of work to it. It was in WA when he 1st purchased it unfinished and shipped it across from SA. We sorted quite a bit of the car and had it all road rego'd over here but it was still pretty stock then. It's had a bit of a rebuild nowadays and he punts it regularly around a few circuits. He picked up a job in QLD a couple of years ago and shipped up there... Utilises all S6 running gear..

Mitch, one thing I want to get when the Camaro is done is either a 61 Buick with LS running gear as a daily or a track car. I've been looking at a few options for track cars. Open wheelers (looked at a nice Ralt the other day, but not cheap), or a Clubman / Lotus 7, but something with more grunt than the usual 1.6L jap engines....or have also been toying with an FIA approved 250 superkart (they lap Philip Island only 3-5 seconds slower than V8 Supercars)

If I do go a track car it's going to be a wild ride...can't wait to get to the US for my 3 day Jim Miller racing class (Formula 3000 cars)

Just another update. Still waiting on front springs to arrive. Been two months since I ordered them and still another month away. Buuuuut it was like christmas yesterday. wow ok been a VERY long time since I have had any updates on my car.

ALOT has been happening, I tried to get my big block sorted out a bout 6 - 8 months ago and found the valvetrain to be all wrong. So the motor got yanked out straight away. It has been sitting like that since then and was going to sell the car, but then I realised this was one of my dream cars and I really should keep it or I'd regret it.

So, a new plan has been hatched and I am motivated again with the car. I have bought a whole new stereo set up for the car, all Eclipse gear, not sure how much I will be able to hear but oh well.

now for the bigger stuff...

I have a new motor on the way. I have bought a brand new DART SHP 350 4 bolt block with priority mains oiling for the new combo. I have also bought a trans am racing spec sump for the motor to keep it from suffering oil surge.

The new motor will have a lot of goodies inside, with forged H beam pistons, 11:1 custom made CP forged pistons, a nice big mechanical roller cam with around 650 thou lift, Alloy racer pro heads that will be modified for better flow and some good gear for the valvetrain. it will be topped off by an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap manifold and AED 850cfm carby.

The motor should be getting built in the next few months and I have also purchased a new Alloy case Super T10 4 speed manual and some new 4 piston corvette calipers to go under the 15" rims.

That is all the updates I have for the moment.

Cheers,

Rowan
