I need help with understanding import cost like why some say $3200 and others around the $4500-$5500 to land a car here??plus GST??
Do i pay gst there or here and do i include the shipping when paying the total with the GST ??
Does anyone know someone like here in melbourne who will ship the car and also have a look at it and be TRUSTED with my money to hand it to the seller.

Yep, you pay GST etc on all of your costs to purchase and land the car here. Including any transport to the docks etc..
The others that have personally been through it will be able to explain better.

the $32oo most charge dosnt cover transport to the docks in USA ,, it can be pricey depending on how far it is. then you get slugged when it hits aus by aussie customs with taxes, duties gst ect.. thats how the companys say 'THEY' only charge you $3200 ...All other charges are from elswhere. thats a basic explanation in lamans terms.

Went thru it a couple of years ago-budget 7-7.5 grand all up for a 30-40k USA purchase.
Expect unavoidable delays and ONLY use someone who imports as a full time occupation-not a seemingly professional part timer as I did-and there are plenty of those around.
Calling the USA for an extended period of weeks in the wee hours to ask the dealer, road transporter or shipping agent where the hell your car is because the importer doesn't know-is something you really should avoid.
Ask lots of questions and speak to your chosen importers recent customers.
Mustang owners forum is very useful in this department

You pay the AU Gov't the GST via your agents total [eg you pay him] The "you pay the GST" is the GST charge on the value of your car + shipping. They dont know the value of your car so they cant quote you the GST on it.
Total cost of what the car owes you in USA $$ incl tows in the USA [ you or the seller drove it to the shippers ya?] & convert to AU$ [ $ exchange rate is taken from the day the car LEAVES the USA NOT the day you paid for it or changed your money]
Add the AU$ converted USA packing/shipping fees at the USA end
Add the shipping/dock/customs and any other fees in OZ to total
Total it up , incl the car,USA & AU shipping & packing[ customs will always add a few hundred to your AU value of the car [ its a percentage deal and too complicated, but its on your papers from your Agent in AU.]
10% is your GST
You also pay the $50 DOTARS fee to Canberra, [ import approval papers]
Unknown costs are if Customs clean the car [ add AU $100-150 + GST]. If the container gets randomed 'red-lined' ..eg ex-rayed and the container gets delayed you MAY be liable for storage costs from the docks, around and up to $200 a day per container. But only if customs delays, you should NOT be liable if your agent hasnt the room or is not ready for it to be unpacked at his depot, but most WILL charge this fee out to you +GST !!!
You can claim a redline fee back if its Customs doing for a refund of costs.
Heres a tip for you, ...Always mark your ex USA parts boxes and reciepts 'Made In USA'. This will save you any extra costs on GST as we have a free trade agreement with the USA only, and not with China, even if you buy your Chinese made parts [ and what aint these days]from the USA
Im pretty sure there are % changes in now [or soon] for cars 10% and non USA parts 15% so check to be sure.
If they are charging you more than say $3500=$4K max for the shipping totals, find someone else!
cheers Dave
