View Full Version : Yeti 69 Build up - Sort of!

Im not really sure if I can call this a build thread as I have didn’t acually built my 69 from the ground up. In saying this it has still taken a fair bit of work to get it to point it is at now – A bee’s dick from going over the pits. I also plan on doing fair bit more in the future so this is a good a place as any to post. – I’ll also add some more pics to keep everyone happy once I get it out of the shed and off stands!

Ok, a little bit of history. From the research I have done and after speaking to the last owner the history of the car goes something like this. It’s a Norwood car that came of the production line in November 68. It was ordered as an SS / RS with a 300hp / 350ci,4 speed munchie c/w factory air, deluxe interior, euro front bumper, disks all round, blah blah.

Few old pics from the states. Ill add some more when I get home..

The guy I bought it off in the states had owned it for the last 20 years, with his son owning it for the previous 5 years – prior to that the first owner was an elderly retired chap from Arizona who passed away shortly after buying it in 1972, it spend 10 years in storage as his wife couldn’t bare to part with being his pride and joy.

Now the son put the majority of the miles on it, the story goes that he blew the original motor and it ended up in storage again until his dad took it over for a steal (according to him!!), he replaced the original motor and drove it on weekends for the next few years before deciding to to do a rebuild. The rebuild did not really go to plan due to personal issues etc and ended taking some serious time to complete, basically up until the time I bought it last year. As a result of all this storage time it only has 34,000 original miles on the clock.

Unfortunately he didn’t keep the original drive line, which I find kinda weird as he wanted to keep it as original as possible and then fitted and LS6, T56, 9in and Global from end… I love the drive line and suspension, but would have loved to have the original drive line to drop back in if ever required, oh well!

Now the fun stuff starts for me, during the last few years of the build the guy had more personal problems and had to rush the final assembly of the fuel system and electrical system for the LS6 install. He did all this over a 2 week period last year so he could sell it and not end up giving it to his wife – nasty stuff!! This resulted in several issues that I was not happy with ( me being a “little” pedantic !!). More of this later.

I had been looking for a sweet 69 SS / RS for quite some time and I really wanted to go the pro touring look without being to wild as to cause problems with rego in oz. So I contacted a broker in the US to find what I wanted.... Bur he never came up with the goods. However, I was lucky enough to find the car I wanted advertised on its way from the US, so I bought it sight unseen and spent the next few months nervously waiting for its arrival. When it arrived in Brisbane I booked a flight and flew straight over to Brisbane. I was super stoked and it was exactly what I was looking for. However, our friends at the Australian customs in Sydney decided they wanted to inspect the container for narcotics and in doing so damaged both front guards ( I still haven’t had this fixed and every time I work on the car it drives me nuts). As usual they denied all responsibly, this is complete bull as I have all the original pics from how it was packed in LA, and on arrival in Brisbane the tie down methods and supports where completely different!! – They also managed to partially destroy a beautiful 55 Chev in the process, w@nkers!

I trucked it to Perth without a hitch, no damage and no drama.. Happy to have it home I took it for a quick spin around the block and then put it on stands and started to work out what I needed to do to get it regoed. First thing I noticed was that the positive and negative battery cables had been run next to and attached to the fuel lines!! What was he thinking? The wiring harness was a complete mess, cable ties everywhere with no heat shielding and plenty of melted conduit to match. So I removed and reinstalled the wiring harness, re routed the battery cables, install an isolation switch and replaced the battery mounting system in the boot.

Now happy I moved on to the fuel system, again this was a little rough, so I rebuild this, installed a high volume fuel pump, fitted dynamat under the fuel tank to help insulated and cushion the tank against the boot – What a PITA as this was. Happy with this I fitted new seat belts, changed out the head lights, fitted the right hand wing mirror, installed the washer bottle and hoses.

Next time I fired her up it had this hellish squeal coming from what I thought was the alternator, after much stuffing around I isolated the problem to the PS pump and uncovered a crack in the PS pump pulley. I ordered and fitted a new one from the states; I didn’t have a press to fit the pulley so I used a jig and a vice – bad idea. As it turned out without support on the drive shaft whilst applying force to fit the pulley I moved its location by about 3mm which was enough to damage the seals and seal face on the shaft.. Unfortunately I didn’t pick this up until firing her up and having hydraulic oil piss out everywhere – of the asserory drive comes again. As it currently stands Im waiting on a new PS pump from the states. Once I get this puppy its straight over the pits.. Yay!!!

During this time I went a bit nuts buying stuff from the states – my wife is very understanding, but has now told me no more goodies until I fit all the new stuff I have sitting in the shed . Now once I get it regoed I will fit all these goodies.! Boy I can’t wait to get this lot on.

- Rushforth super spokes, polished hoops with black powder coated centres - 18in front and 19in rear
- Baer 350mm, 6 pot Pro streets front and back
- Every bit of Felser billet stuff I could buy, waiting on reverse lights and combo front driving light / indicator / park lights.
-
Future plans include bolt in coil over rear end and War Hawk 427 LSX
Well that’s it for now, more updates when I get home from work at the end of the month and get her on the road. Apologies for the long winded essay, but thought it was about time I added something to the forum!

Cheers

Awesome Lyndsay. I've patiently awaiting a thread on your 69 stunner - Teases me every time I see your avatar :p

I really dig the direction you are heading too, and like all, can't wait to see the progress of bolting up your shed full of goodies! As for the long-winded bit, definitly no complaints from me!! :D I'd desperately love to find out some of the history of my machine - even a couple of years worth, but back to new is excellent.

Can I ask what's the wheel/tyres specs of what you have currently? And the front ride height is spot on - What's the deal there? Cheers & enjoy!!

Thanks guys for the kind words.. Cant wait to get it out on the road either!! Next project will be a ground up resto - probably and early mopar, maybe a 70/71 cuda, but this will be a few years down the track.

Deano, the rims are 17 x 8, 4.75" BS all round.. Not 100% sure on the rubber but I think from memory they are 255/40 rear and 245/35 front. The front has Global west control arms and 2in drop spindles, the rear has Global west multi leafs with a 2in drop. I think i'll drop the rear another 1/2 - 1in when I get the brakes and new wheels fitted.. Well we will see!!

Steve, It was already installed in the car.. 20bucks is a little exy for a bit of Ali!!

I like the sound of these future plans Lyndsay, no shortage of hp there mate.

Martly, will be heading over to the states next year, plan on getting all the parts block, heads etc and building it myself. Aiming at around 750HP, the bokes at World say this is easily achievable, especially with the 2300 Harop blower  . I was going to put it straight on the LS6, but looking at all the beefing up it would need I have decided against it - it can be my spare motor just in case :D

P.S Just had the PS pump ali pulley and hydraulic hose delivered at home, still waiting on the pump!!

Apparently if the word Juiced or Joosed is mentioned you are implying that you condone driving under the influence???

Anyway new plates are YETI 69 in orange with white letters - hope this doesn't look to pooncy  ... Yeti is the nick name I have had since I was in grade 3 and it has kinda stuck. So there it is.

Geez, these people are pathetic.
Perhaps Juiced means the real meaning of the word. Did they think of that I wonder..
With that paranoid way of thinking, I'm suprised that "BLKOUT" wasn't considered a racist term that implies that blacks are to get out.

Juiced.. Did you tell them the car was orange?

If you look carefully you can see the damage under the SS badges on the front guards from my friend at customs.

Front end will drop around 120mm when its off the stands

Rear should drop about 10mm with a full tank of "gas" - considering another 20mm drop ?

You are not going to believe this Steve. The afternoon before I left to come back to work I went into the local performance shop looking for some AN fittings. Whilst waiting for service I was wandering around in the shop as you do and found the exact PS pump I needed hidden on a shelf, and this one was polished as well. Couldnt believe it, the owner told me a guy ordered about a year ago and never picked it up. It was the same price as the one I got from the states as well. I think I may go back and get it as spare just to be sure! Been there all the time

69SS
16-04-2010, 10:18 PM
Thought I would throw an update up from what I achieved last month prior to going back to work – not as much as I wanted!

Managed to complete all the wring and fitted the PS pump and fired her up. Kicked over first time ( was a little worried as I pulled a lot of wiring off and also install a new 600hp fuel pump, which hadn’t been tested. Bled the brakes with my new power bleeder and took it for a spin. Felt unreal, even though we (wife and I ) only went for a spin around the block. First thing my wife said was, its very loud isnt it

Parked it back up in the shed and found she was getting a little hot and the reverse lights weren't coming on, turned out the thermos weren't working, as wiring is not exactly my strong point I called an auto electrician, but he wasn’t available until late in the afternoon on the day before a flew back out to work. Anyway he fixed the thermos ( I had the relays wired up wrong - duh), didn’t get time to sort out the reverse lights.

Also discovered that I had orientated the emergency brake adjustment shaft too far out on the rear calipers (1986 Cad servile calipers and discs) meaning the rear discs where engage constantly – they were a little hot and smokey after my spin. Jacked it up and couldn’t move the wheels at all by hand – not good!

So next trip home after my surf trip plan is to fix the brakes and get the reverse lights working and she is over the pits.

This is taking a lot longer than I thought it would, mainly from me stuffing things up!

Here are a couple of before and after pics ( sorry about the rubbish quality phone pics ) of the new Fesler reverse lights installed. Much better fit than the originals and so much shinier :p

OEM - not such a great fit.

Especialy stoked that Blackout Steve likes it, not running dog dishes and all ;)

Warren the wheels are Rushforth super spokes from the states, quite a few of the boys on USM are running Rushforths.

-Front 18 x 8, 245/40
-Rear 19 x 10 275/35.

Jason Rushforth is a member on USM, drop him a PM for the latest pricing. They were around 3700AUD landed from memory. And no its not tubbed, but you have to make sure you have the right backspacing for the diff width and have standard wheel tub clearance. My diff is around an inch wider than standard and they will rub on the outer guard when cornering heavily. After rego the diff will be going in for narrowing.;)

Seriously, yeah it looks fantastic and I think the ride height is perfect. It has a slightly aggressive rake which is what I think looks good and would be less than 1" . If you lower the rear, you'd need to lower the front.

So thats it!! super happy, but need to wait 7 weeks to get it done as I'm back to work on Tuesday and its a public holiday on monday. happy happy joy joy!!!

Looks great out in the sun with the Rushforths on Lyndsay, much better than in the shed on jack stands anyway :)

Have to agree with the others, no need to lower anything mate, stance is just right

I'll be waiting patiently for you to swing past my place for a another look if your heading up to Pauls on the weekend :D

Marty you are so right, it does look a lot better in the light.. and have to agree now that the stance is spot on.. Will call in and say g'day when its actually legal, had a little peak out on the way home with the cops!!

Well, let's not get too excited. I said it looks great. I would have said it looks totally awesome if it had a set of dog-dishes of course.. :p :D
Seriously, yeah it looks fantastic and I think the ride height is perfect. It has a slightly aggressive rake which is what I think looks good and would be less than 1" . If you lower the rear, you'd need to lower the front.
2" off the rear would make it look like you pulled the engine!:p

Yeah Steve the more I look at it the more me likey.. Might have to get some "special 18in steelies and dog dishes :D:p:eek:

wouldnt it be the same as any commodore from VT II onwards?? Maybe Dellow or CRS?

Or Summit in the states.

Finally an update... Got back from Holidays and work with 6 days until I leave for wprk again. So straight out to the shed. I ended up fabricating a flywheel cover out of 3mm plate ali as I couldnt buy one anywhere - turned out better than the original anyway. Also built two new rear exhaust hangers using the original rear mounting points for dual exhaust - ( one of the defects was the the tail pipe hitting the leaf ).

Fabricated front brake line retainers to replace the clamps I was using ( they didnt like them!).

Went back to the pits yesterday and had a different inspector who went through it in more detail than last time.. I was packing it and thought another fail coming up !! He found a little bit of movement in the lower right ball joint, so I thought I was done and time to go home with my tail between my legs. Anyway to cut a long story short its finally licenced :-):D:D:D:D

Driving home from the pits I was pulled over by the cops as I hadn't fitted the plates, but they where really cool and just wanted a look.

6026

As there was the play in the ball joint I decided to fit the Global West LCA's I have had sitting in the shed for ages.. What a PITA that was.

Here is Pic after I fitted the plates :). Next is the Baer brakes and then I'm done until stage 2 and 3 !!!

Cheers,

Fitted the brakes today, but run out of time so didn't get to bleed the system and go for a spin. They fitted perfect and should stop her quite nicely, shimming them was a bit of a pain, but not too bad.

Unfortunately I also found this cracked tie rod tube (is that the right name?) Lucky this didn't let go when I was driving, anyone seen this happen before?? looks like it might have happened when I lowered the jack after fitting the new LCA.

Yeah maybe mate.... Just kidding, I'll get some decent ones either today and tomorrow and post them up, weather has gone to poop today.

I went and saw the dent dude yesterday hoping that he might be able to pull the dents on the guards, but he doesn't think its achievable. Looks like a complete re-spray for both guards. Bit pissed about this, but what can I do. Apart from this I am super happy.

With new rear brakes fitted the tyres fit up in the guards really nice, about 10mm clearance on either side. The hats on the new rotors are 8mm thinner than the old cast iron jobbies!

I'm up and down about lowering it 1/2" in the rear.. It has a nice rake, worried that it will look too flat with the drop, plus I need to wait on the new exhaust that clears a little better. I am now thinking that I should get a set of 18in x 9.5in for the rear, not 100% sold on the 19 x 10's.

Just a quick update.

Had the new exhaust fitted on Thursday / Friday and picked it up yesterday afternoon, it looks and sounds unreal, completely different in fact. I had it painted flat black and it really looks nice and stealthy - except for the polished magnaflow mufflers :)

With the helpof Chris (68camro) fitted the Aluminum sill trims, re shimmed the rear calipers - they were out a few thou causing them to rub on the rotors. Also fitted the drum in hat park brake shoes - I now have a functioning park brake!

Going to give it a bit of detail tomorrow and then head up the hills for a cruise and hopefully get some decent pics to post.

I'm hoping to get the new radiator next week and that will be the next addition.

11-10-2010, 06:19 PM
Hi guys, not really a build update, but I have made a few "sensible" decisions regarding phase two of the build - no more HP LSX at this stage!

I have decided against the engine upgrade for a number of reasons, first I will need a new rear end first to handle the HP, and secondly finances ( and my wife ) dictate that I should pay some more off the mortgage - smart thinking really! Also I have had a chat or two with people that have a lot more muscle car experience the me that made me see the light. I think I have enough HP at the moment for me to handle. Making the car handle better and more comfortable for the occupants seems like a smarter priority for me. :p

This is the forward plan I have mapped out - subject to change as always!

Step 1) - Probably do this in November, if time permits!

1) Remove the seats carpet etc, paint the floor in POR15, lay dynamat, diner liner etc - similar to Blackout Steve, but not as extreme
2) Fit the new AAW harness, near dash and Autometer gauges
3) Fit new ST2 seats from Arizen and Morris 3 point belts - ordered a set trimmed in comfortweave same as the current deluxe interior
4) Build a custom centre console out of ali and have it covered

Step 2) - Place order last week 12-16 weeks delivery

1) Install G-link 4 bar rear end c/w FAB 9 diff and new axles - should arrive just after Christmas

Step 3) - Next winter as this will take me some time

1) Remove the front end, blast the sub frame, fully weld and paint
2) Remove the factory AC and install the vintage air IV system
3) Clean up the engine bay, hide all the wiring and hoses, fit Mil spec bulkhead connectors in the trans tunnel to hide the LS wiring
4) CAM upgrade and tune, hide the coils and billet valve covers
3) Refit the front end and replace all the fasteners with a Prodigy SS kit.

That will be it then for a few years, except for the usual bits and pieces that I wont be happy with lol.

What do you guys think? Does it make sense, I have around 420hp at the moment and with a Cam and tune should ( fingers crossed ) get around 450hp!

Nev68
11-10-2010, 06:32 PM
Sounds like a plan Lyndsay.
There's more to these cars that just a ton of HP up front.
As you imply, no point in having tons of grunt if evrything behind the donk craps itself.

I wish I could have put an LS1 or LS2 in mine but I wanted to keep it LH drive.
I think it's a great and smart transplant and yours shouild be even better with your planned upgrades.

1) Remove the seats carpet etc, paint the floor in POR15, lay dynamat, diner liner etc - similar to Blackout Steve, but not as extreme..

Don't skimp on this stuff Lindsay.. It's real easy and relatively cheap to install.
What I am doing is by no means "extreme".
Just don't stop at the Dynamat Xtreme. When used on it's own, it's not the best product for the job. ;)

I won't be skimping Steve. I just won't be going as in depth as you ;), I don't plan on doing the roof of the trunk liner - may do the trunk at a later date. Just the main floor pan and firewall at this stage while I have the interior out, and probably the doors. I'm also plan on fitting Dynaliner and Dynapad to complete the job. I read that article that you posted on sound deadening and it all makes a lot of sense. I just want to remove some of the rattle, road noise and heat, and generally make if feel more solid.

Bit of update on the mods and additions completed in the last few months - sorry about the crap iphone pics!!.

Fitted new Arizen ST2 front seats in OEM vinyl / comfortweave, pic below only shows one seat and is kind crappy from my iphone. They are super comfy and hold you in place really well around twisties - not to everyone's taste, but I like them ( they where meant to come without harness holes, but they screwed the order up ). I also fitted Morris 3 point belts at the same which feel much better than the old lap belts - cant recommend these enough!

8450

Also cut out holes for the gauges in the Anvil dash insert that I have had for quite a while, this was a PITA due to it being CF. Again I like the look, but it will definitely not be everyone's taste ( they screwed this order up as well as they where meant to be satin and not gloss, but I can always rub it back with a fine grade wet and dry. It has a full inventory of Autometer Ultra light II's covering fuel pressure, oil pressure, fuel, water temp, oil temp and amps. To complete the look I will be removing the wood grain and replacing with either real CF or just plain black ( don't worry I won't be destroying the original wood grain stuff :p ) The new dash wont be fitted until I remove the front clip in winter to tidy the engine bay up as this will also include installing the new AAW wiring kit and sound deadening the interior.

8451

I had it dyno tuned and a new polished intake pipe fitted back in February and it pulled 370rwhp, while not earth shattering by any means I can really feel the difference. Plus is actually idles and sounds like a muscle car :D. I had a couple of overheating issues as well ( boiled over at Big Als on the way in ) turned out I had a pair of dodgy relays which I replaced.

Still waiting on the new rear end and Vintage Air AC, but hopefully I will have that before winter really sets in. That's about it for now, still a long way to go!

Cheers,

Lyndsay

During the last cruise the Mrs and I went on we finally decided that we'd had enough of the 1980ish "stereo" and what I think are the original 69 speakers - AM radio rocks... not. SO while sitting offshore waiting for the drilling boys to do their thing I decided to do some online research. I ended up ordering a set of Focal K2 165KRX2 splits for the front, Hertz HER-HCX 690 6 x 9's for the parcel shelf and two JL Audio HD amps, HD 600/4 and HD 750/1. The speakers were ordered from the UK and the amps from the US. Its weird, amps are cheaper in the US and speakers are cheaper in the UK, go figure!

Now I just got to work out how to fit it out while keeping it clean and not making the trunk look all doof doof, riceamatic.

I still need to order a decent Head unit and sub in oz, at this stage thinking of going with an Alpine INA-W900E - GPS,DVD,IPOD blah blah, the US and UK head units are not ideal in oz for various reasons, plus the weight of the sub rules out any chance of a decent shipping rate.

Some time back I ordered a set Screaming performance kick panels that are designed for 6.5in splits as I don't fancy cutting up my door panels, plus according to the "experts" the acoustics / axis from the kicks is meant to be much better than from the doors. These will shipping with my rear suspension, so it might be a while before I can get them fitted. :(

In the mean time I plan on stripping out the interior and fitting the Luxuryliner and Damplifier Pro, once I get home that is.

Stay tuned for updates, I hope!

Paul, its nothing to exciting I am afraid. Yeti is a nickname that I have had since I was in primary school and still have, so I thought why not carry on the tradition with the Camaro. Originally I was going to go with "JUICED" or "JUICED UP" but the powers that be wouldn't approve the plates,as they believed it was inappropriate as it supported DUI, bloody lunatics!!

Thought it was time for an update.

Currently back at work in Cairo, then off to the US of A for four weeks, NYC, San Fran, Hwy 1, LA, Arizona and then off to SEMA, cant wait. I'll be heading straight back to work from the US, so wont be back in Oz until early December – this means I’m going to have to wait a while to get the Camaro back on the road after stage II.

I managed to get a little done before I had to fly out, basically only stripping the interior in readiness for fittiing the following.

- AAW full wiring kit
- Vintage Air IV
- Custom console
- Second Skin DamplifierPro and Luxuryliner Pro - similar to dynamat products
- POR15 the floor
- Anvil dash and Autometer gauges
- Mild sound audio system

Also plan on pulling the front clip and generally tiding up the engine bay, painting the underside of the floor pan with either POR15 of a bedliner. I have the ok from the Mrs to spend 2-3 full time weeks on this with the professional help of the Banjup custom crew ( Chris S ) :):D

This will be followed by fitting the Chris Alston 4 link G-link, if it ever arrives!!

Issue was the vendor didn't place the orders with the manufactures until I chased it up. Lots off confusion on their side.

The Vintage Air IV has arrived and the packing date / QAQC sheet was dated July 2011, thats when I chased the whole order up for the 5th time - I would say that is when the order was sent to Chris Alston for the rear, so it had to be built. I little annoyed, but what can I do. Part of the order arrived on Sep 5th, the the rest due in November, I hope!!

The purple wire is certainly not OE, because your battery is in the trunk.. Who fitted the battery back there? Perhaps you should ask them. If it goes to the amp gauge, then it's for the amp gauge, right?
The only purple OE wire that heads into the trunk is to power a rear window defogger.

I Haven't been on the forum much of late, life sort of got in the way of the Camaro build and I kinda of regret starting the mods prior to summer ( would have preferred to be out cruising ). Anyway whats done is done and last month I got a bit more completed, would have been alot more if it wasn't so freakin hot in the workshop.

The front end is off, well all except the subframe, the dash and all wiring has been removed, and I finally received all the rear suspension components - except for the axles and they are due mid Jan - 14 months after ordering them

I thought I had more progress pics, but they must be on my other camera at home - I'll add these next month when I get home.

After stripping the front end the thing I did was cut out the AC panel with a spot weld cutter ( PITA ) and 4in grinder. Then knocked up a template out cardboard and used this to cut out an AC delete panel out of 18 gauge sheet metal - I used a mates knibbler at his fab shop that made it a hell of a lot easier. Was actually quicker cutting this out than the template.

I then used a 6in DA sander to smooth of the welds, this took well over 8hrs of sanding and grinding, not much fun

To fill the small holes - RS vacuum lines etc i used a peice of masking tape over the hole and cut out holes and used this as a template to transfer to the sheet metal before cutting it out and adjusting the shape with a linishing wheel.

Complete panel installed - still need to tig weld the top seam, just spot welded at present

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j384/yeti69/IMG_1302.jpg

This picture showed the masking tap, and then a small fill panel and also and none filled hole - RS vacuum

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j384/yeti69/IMG_1301.jpg

This shows the three holes filled and sanded

Sad clipless Camaro;)

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j384/yeti69/IMG_1305.jpg

I'll add some pictures of the cutout etc when I get home. I'm hopeing the get the firewall completed, Vintage AC installed and subframe removed smoothed , painted and reinstalled in Feb as a minimum - we will see on this
