Hey Shane. Congrats on getting it home. No doubt the ideas are flowing hard & fast! For what it's worth, yuo can easily change your username - Several guys here have. (USA-69Z Gav & Randa Paul know how).

So what your thoughts for the project? Tough custom streeter? Return to Factory original style? Twin turbo injected BBC driving the 4-link & tubs? Things change, but be good to hear your ballpark direction :) ENJOY!

PS - Everyone here will swear by the importance of factory manuals, but I've also found this incredibly helpful with my project so far...

In the states they call them 70 and a half due to the late production. 1970 seats are a one year only with seperate headrest similar to a hq holden short style.

Hey Shane, I didnt have to change mine in NSW. Original lap belts.

I also have a later 2nd gen set with retractable shoulder straps with the retractor that goes up on the roof. Used and tan colour that might scrub up if interested. You would have to adapt a mount up the back on the roof.

You can also go to a wreckers and grab a set of belts from an old holden. As the seatbelts were in an Ozzy car then they meet OZ design rules. Saw this done in my old camaro and written up in the engineering report.

Also Hemco for a new set.

I redid my headliner and it is a massive pain to get right. Get a quote to get it done and if cheap, I'd let them do it.

Try KLIPAN (i think thats how it's spelt), they do after market belts that can be purchased from most Repco's etc...

71RS
14-11-2009, 08:26 PM
$750 at USGM. Yikes! About $350 in the US from memory

Mate, I have never seen them on ebay or anywhere else in Aust. I'd be checking out Classic or National Parts Depot in the States. I buy from NPD all the time and can really recommend them. I'll ask my guy for a quote. My guess is the postage will be high. USGM probably knows how much it will cost to ship from the States and adjusts his price to be about the same.

Make that $390, dang price has gone up. Also be careful not to order a "dash cap". These are much cheaper and fit over an existing dash to hide any cracks or warping. Have you considered fabricating your own dash?

73camaro
14-11-2009, 08:42 PM
i looked in the states but the cost of post was the killer, around $300 so it works out to be the same, this is the one im looking at

You have to try to optimise the shipping costs by ordering a few things whne buying from the U.S.
That's my experience anyway
Surely you can think of a few more things you need:)

Shane,
Just got this quote for a dash from NPD.

I have attached a quote (FL312564) containing the parts you have inquired about. Shipping costs would be estimated at approximately $163-219 +/-. While we make an honest effort to provide a price range for shipping, the actual charge is only known once the order is placed, pulled, packed and weighed. The actual charge is passed on directly and may vary from the estimate given.

No, The later model cluster has those large plastic tabs sticking forward. I made the same mistake and now stuck with it. Had to buy another one.
You need this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290365828116
I wouldnt buy a used dash again. You'll find that half the instuments will be clapped out or they wont last long. Plus try and clean the dial faces and the markings will come off with little effort.

Do you know if your car had a U14 gauge option? If not, then buying that style cluster will require a few wiring mods. Not hard but just thought you should know.

This guy is meant to have great stuff. All rebuilt and warranty. Pricey but you get what you pay for.

http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166248&highlight=u14

Another option is to make your own panel and put some aftemarket gauges in it.

73camaro
17-11-2009, 06:48 PM
actually looking at this i think it will fit as its exactley the same size and shape then the other one that came out of it, the indicator globes are in the exact same spot but this new one i brought have these plastic tabs for the indicators, if i take them off they should line up

71RS
17-11-2009, 07:08 PM
Good Luck, they are different! Once you get them have close look at them and you'll realise the difference. You will need to modify and make boxes around where the indicators are.
Dont know your skills but you might be able to do some cutting and pasting to make it all work. And just hope it all lines up nicely when you start putting your dash back in the car.

Personally, Id resell the cluster and start again.

Do yourself a favour and start trawling NastyZ28.com forums. All the info is on it regarding everything you need to do.Those covens dashs have known fitment issues. You might find something better. You may also be able to buy it cheaper elsewhere.

And what ever you do, dont buy anything from ecklers. They used to be good but now utter crap. You wont get your stuff SENT for weeks. Their part prices may seem ok but they are now stocking many low quality parts and you ge what you pay for. I will never use them again.

Buy yourself a Covan and some Autometers :D I've never tried to compile all the parts for a 2nd gen dash but I imagine it could get expensive, and you may just be buying someones crap that is no better than what you have :(

Covan, not super expensive, and they're easy to work with. Not a 2nd gen Camaro :( but the one in my Nova :)

anyone know what the best to use to get all the paint off the kickpanels? should i just use a paint stripper

My advice would be to do the following:

get yourself some long rubber gloves that go up your arm
A bucket with water in it.
purchase some stripper in a can as its even when sprayed
use steel wool with soap in it already frothed up
about 10 seconds after the paint crinkles dip the steel wool in water and lightly scrub.
after you have finished treat the plastic with a vynal reviver.

71RS
07-12-2009, 09:05 PM
Paint stripper, you could melt the plastic? I half melted a ford dash when I grabbed a wrong can of basic oven cleaner. Hot soap and a scourer. Go easy first, no result, then amp it up. Maybe a little thinners? Do a test on the back first.

Sorry Ehbobeh I have to dissagree. The thinners WILL melt this type of plastic, and the scouring brush will break the surface of the plastic if used with the above.

As a detailer I used this process regulary on solid plastics like I have described.

The skill is to spray the paint stripper lightly like a spray painter with an even overlap and then quickly after it rinkles the paint use the steel wool with soap to remove in a wiping motion: left to right or right to left (dont use circles) , may take two to three goes.

This process only harms the paint as it does not have enough time to get through to harm the plastic.

The spray stripper is fast and controllable, the paint on paint stripper is not controllable as well.

With major investments like that I'd strart loking at classic Indutries and waiting (if you can) for one of the discounts they do quite regularly.

I've bought a ton of gear from Classic Industires and found them to be quite reliable.

I think you get what you pay for with chrome.
My front and rear bars cost close to $700 for a bit of straightening, dent knocking and chrome.
It's a bit of money and I wished I researched the aftermarket bars at the time, but when I got the bars back.....sh!t they looked good.

been on holidays for a few weeks, arrived back to some new parts, b & m shifter quicksilver, new parcel shelf and also a s/h gauge cluster in perfect condition, all parts have arrived now.

issue i have is with the shifter, the shifter is one to suit a console.. i wasnt planning on having a console but i maye have to due to the shifter issue, problem is the shifter is to suit a 73-81 camaro, my current console that came with the car is a 73 onwards, are the 73-81 consoles and the 70-72 consoles similar? will they both fit in a 70 camaro

OldIndian
02-01-2010, 09:36 PM
73Camaro.... they are close but different. the mounts are different, the early shifter is like the 69 the aircraft style but the 73+ is like a single shaft. thats if you go with the original stuff.

73camaro
03-01-2010, 10:46 AM
ok so i can go with the quicksilver shifter if i buy the 73 console? this shifter fits perfect on the existing bolts atm

Nice to see bolt-on dash brackets in 1973.. 67-69 are weld on.

What brand is the heater core? Is it a universal fit or specifically to suit the Camaro?

ok a few more parts have arrived, including new console, trying to get car running, put new carby on and replaced fuel pump, still no go, its not pumping fuel, must be a blockage in the fuel line??

blackoutsteve
17-01-2010, 11:16 AM
Have you primed the pump? Maybe it's cavatating..
It might be easier for your pump to expand air as opposed to pull fuel.

Mech or elec pump?

73camaro
17-01-2010, 08:08 PM
it is a holley mech pump, fixed the problem, pick up in the tank was bent and was not even sitting in the tank, very happy motor runs smooth as, installed rear speakers and new parcel shelf and padding, also put new trunk lock and bezel on as it didnt even have one

Seat belts, windscreen and headlamps are three things that generally require changing.

Post some more pics when you get them installed.

I am waiting for my new seat covers to come in from Classic which are now scheduled to be delivered Monday. Cost was $666US delivered. They where sent on Wednesday UPS and got to Sydney @ 0230 Thursday Morning. Since arriving at Mascot they are "In Transit", 1 day to go 10000km and another 5 days to go the last 90km. I paid for express service and got what I paid for until they landed in Australia.

Looking good mate. Iv just refitted front sheet metal too. In order to line up front guards i had too place washers between new subframe bushings and body. Did you have any issues? Iv also started modifications too rear lights so i can get it ready for engineers.Lots too do...

How did you attach your front swaybar mounts, standard bolt or modified. Just wanted to check as the standard setup is weak due to the bolt stripping the thread out of the frame. There known to come adrift in a bad way.

AlexK

My front sway bar was actually missing. A mate in queensland sent me his old one. 24mm. i used energy mounts like yours and bought high tensile bolts. Can brobably add washer and nut too strenghthen.
