The later Dynacorns are OK. They are the OER brand..
Goodmark have a good reputation also.

Good luck on the project.. What is the direction of your resto? To restore, retore/modify.. Got any ideas what you want the result to be?

I would love for it to be blown but I will have to make it street legal. At this stage I have a 350 chev dart heads turbo 400 for it. I will be on the lookout for a big block that I can rebuild.

Floors look very good.
Not sure what happens the U.S with the half @rse panel replacement, I have seen a bit of that. Not sure why they don't replace the panel with the full replacement panel.

What's the jig on the front end for?(last photo)

Not sure why they don't replace the panel with the full replacement panel.

It may have been replaced when full GM panels were the only expensive option. They might be panels off another Camaro.

The right panel may be a skin, but I'd bet the left is from a doner. No skin goes half way up the sail, and no one would buy a brand new GM replacement and cut it like that.. I hope. :p

What was the reason the 1/4s were not unpicked at the factory 1/4-roof seam?

Nice to see some progress Stuart..
What was the reason the 1/4s were not unpicked at the factory 1/4-roof seam?

Its been slow but trying to do as much myself as well to try and save money . I asked the panel beater the same question about the 1/4 he said he can get the join there to be perfect without having to melt the lead and unpick the original join . I think this was just easier for him . I trusted him and so far the quality of work has been very good after he butt welded the joint it has come up really nice .

blackoutsteve
06-01-2011, 11:27 AM
Yeah, they were lead filled from factory. I wanted to have mine lead filled again after my new 1/4s were fitted and was basically talked out of it because of how hard lead filling is to do these days (find experinced people and EPA getting in the way of obtaining quality lead -apparently), the cost involved and that the modern fillers are of extremely high quality.
This was my panel guy talking, and although I wanted to insist on doing it at per OE, I had to respect his knowledge and experience. I don't think he would have minded taking more money off me, but instead he chose his honest advice.

What brand 1/4s? Were they an easy fit?

My panel beater works on all new cars mainly and thats apparently how they do them so i just had to trust him bit like you. All the panels were goodmark they did need alot of work to get them to fit correctly one of the hardest bit was the inner wheel wheels all up about 80 hours work on the rear including straiting the rear rails .

The silver shows the detail of the rear end structure but I have never been one for decorative undercarriage.
I prefer black for under car and keep the bling for wheels/trim/paint . Just my opinion :)

Me too. Nothing worse than being distracted from a nice body by some abstract thing under a car. No prizes for me suggesting OE GM Satin Black. :)

I guess it all depends on whether you want to attract attention to it, in order to show it off. If it's Pro Touring, bright silver! :p

My vote is still for a silver Grey mate, a little more grey than silver for me - thinking about going the same way for the subframe as well - still not sure:(.

I had a small set back with my diff, long story, but it seems CA ( Chris Alston ) had some issues with the manufacturing of the diff due to my existing brake package ( pre 2010 Baer bearing retainers with small bearings ) the diff is now ready, along with a new set of post 2010 bearing retainers and late model Torino bearings. A bit frustrating, but i'm getting there and this set up will be much stouter. I'll Hhopelly have all the gear early August :D

Be sure to post some pics please Stu, I am really interested in seeing what the 4 bar and Fab 9 is going to look like under there :). Are you fully welding the saddles to the frame rails? If so are you going to use a TIG and then get it NDTed? That's what I was planning,to be 100% sure on its structural integrity.

Far as i am aware the guy doing it is going to use a mig. In the instruction booklet it gives you a great discription of how to install it in colour to and it says to fully weld it. Then i call the engineer and he will come and look at the welds.

Sounds great, I am looking forward to seeing the 4 bar setup. How hard are these to engineer these days, I can seem to get a straight answer.I like the grey idea underneath, on my car I went black so that it did not attract to much attention, all you can see are the half inch lines from the rear surge fittings.

At the moment i have got 100mm clearance from the shock mount to the ground with 15 inch wheels. The wheels and tyre combination i am going to run are about another 25mm bigger in diameter so i should have enough clearance but i was concerned about that to.

I'm doing a resto on a 68 firebird and i am just about to finish off my subframe.
My lower control arm holes were not so round anymore and the bolts were quite loose in them, have you checked yours?
I ended up drilling them out and the lca sleeves with a 14mm drill bit.
All snug now
