Nice. :)
Is the "60/5" something you wrote on the firewall, or was that already there?
Looks like a real nice car. A/C, RS.. Power assisted drums! Has the customer decided to keep the A/C and keep the same color sceme?
Doubt the original small block though. It has a long pump and the alternator's on the wrong side. (correct for 69 & later).
What transmission? Looks like a TH400 crossmember. Multi leafs too. Umm.. Is the axle a 12 bolt?
Good choice on the disc upgrade? Using the '68 Kelsey Hayes 4-piston or the Delco Moraine singles?
Thanks.

the 60/5 is original chalk markings,it was an original pwr disc car, everything that was on the car will go back in,we will do a day 2 resto all but the chalk marks and paint dobs.
It is an original numbers match 396 big block and th400 and 12 bolt, the small block was only dropped into the engine bay to ship out here for another customer, the original 396 was in the boot in pieces.

The crayon on the firewall I expected to be under the paint. I wonder what it means.
Which 396 do you know? L34 or L35?

the motor is the 325 HP L35 4v
I would assume the chalk mark is something to do with the production sequence as it went down the line as it has been put there before any of the front sheetmetal was placed on as it is hidden by the fender when its on.

Yes, but normally the crayon is written on the firewall before it's painted. ;)
You can still see it under the paint, but vaguely..
One therory as to what they mean is RPO C60 D5 of the 68 Assembly Manual, but that relates to the a/c & heater hose installation. C60 D1 is the evaporator install..
Another theory is that's it's an inspection mark from the Fisher Body Trim Shop. That's what JohnZ reckons and he is a wealth of info. He actually worked at the Norwood plant.
Still, doesn't explain their actuall meaning..
Norwood or Van Nuys car?
Are there any other firewall markings that appear to be under the paint?
This is what I mean..

The brief from our customer on this car is to do a day 2 resto, in other words some thing that the factory may have done if they had the technology that we have today i.e: use of powder coating instead of paint, all bolts plated,no bare metal parts,he wants to have a car that to the casual observer looks restored to a high level, yet will have still look good in years to come,Im really not that into chalk and paint mark restos unless the car is something very rare that deserves the money to be spent on it that a 100 point car costs.

Being a spray painter myself I would assume the reason is to keep any form of dust etc from floating around and landing on the areas that are being painted.:)

I thought it would be best to keep the roof from being painted so it could have the correct prep directly on the metal for the vinyl roof..
I'm not a painter, so that purely a guess.:p

Why cover the floor and roof from the paint.. when they will be covered?
No matter how clean the floor and other areas look, there is always that spec of dust or some form of sh*t that will end up in the paint usually in the very first coat,so its good insurance to cover everything inside of roof included, also we leave the paper on while we slice and buff the paint that way there's no mess to clean up in the car.
The roof is primed in epoxy primer so we dont want any paint on it as the epoxy is a great base for the glues that will glue the roof on and a corrosion inhibitor.

We used to have most stuff blasted in the hard areas that is everything other than the outside sheet metal we would strip that by hand. Now the last few cars have been Alkaline dipped (not to be confused with acid ).

Don't know if any of you guys are interested in seeing a 68 396 SS Camaro we have been restoring for the last 12-18 months,an unusual color combo being ash gold ( a very light green met)green interior and white vynil roof with every option you could get back then, hideaways, pwr windows, pwr steer, aircon,it is just going into the paintshop now but if anyone wants I will start from the beginning and post up its rise from the ashes.

Hi, Have only just found this site, and noticed the comment about the unusal colour combo Ash Gold 68.
I have an original Ash Gold 68 myself with Ivory Gold interior and love the colour of both the paint and interior, is a break from the normal colours with often black trim. I would call it more a light gold with a tinge of green in the right light.
It is one of those colours that looks even better in real life than in pictures, it is not realy rare as a original colour, (the white vinyl top would be though) Ash Gold was used in around 9.5% of cars, Matador Red being the highest usage at 12%, Lemas Blue next at 11%, Tuxedo Black was only 1.5%.
I guess its just that many cars have changed from their original colours, to Reds. Blues, Yellows, Black etc that we think of these as being far more common.
Anyhow great to see a great car being put back to its former glory

Cool! Only 2 hours to Bonegilla, thats a quick ride :). You are well equipped in the area. You are heading towards being a Detroit Speed of Oz!
Had thought about an alkaline dip once I get to a repaint. Great way to get back to bare metal...complete with hidden surprises, but how do you ensure the inaccessible areas on a Camaro for example get re-protected? i.e. insides of rockers, C pillar, roof edges, filler panel below rear window, inside tulip panels blah blah blah.

The only 100% way of ensuring that all these areas are coated is to dip the body in a primer tank, dont know any where in aus that does that so we simply pour, spray zinc oxide based primers into every frame rail inner panel etc that we can get to while they body is on the rotissory also take a lot of care to coat any areas that are exposed while we have skins or panels seperated i.e inner door skins as most of these areas are bare metal from the factory, Im sure that we have done as good if not better job than they recieved at the factory.

Shane.
Ok cool! Impressive you go to these lengths, but clearly your work is top end! Congrats on being so thorough! When I originally asked about the paint dip following the alkaline dip a cross eyed look came back and was told it couldnt be done. Having worked for a manufacturer at one point, of course I knew that every car was at least primer dipped on the bottom half. (or maybe that was something i read about...long time ago :)). But anything that was black on HQ-HZ and earlier (inner guards etc etc and some underbody) for example was dipped.
But, the hand applied method where you pour in primer sounds excellent and as you say, a lot better than was done at the factory in the old days where they left so much bare metal and relied on some oil left on from the press shop & original stamping for shorter term protection.

Beautiful looking car but man do I hate those evap boxes for the A/C.
Shane is this going to be a concourse car or does the owner just want the factory look?

They're big aren't they..
I was originally going to find one and convert it to RHD for my car and I'm glad I didn't and went with the under-dash Vintage Air unit.
However, I TOTALLY respect this resto that refits the unit as it was originally.
Some of you may remember this Chevelle from the 60sAMCC show last month with it's RHD converted A/C "suitcase" and big block.

If this was'nt a paint and chalk marks resto then there would be no way I would be using this it would be Vintage air all the way.

Does anyone know what would have been used to paint the steering box on this camaro?
I seems some sort of clear paint was used otherwise it would surface rust.

I think it is "cast iron" paint, see link for example.

Your local Burson or Autobarn have VHT's "Cast Iron" paint.. (Super**** are dear as poison on VHT.)
If you're going to order paint ex-USA (and must be surface mail only) then get that Details brand "Saginaw Steering Box Grey".
It's what I used and it's a very bluey-grey, but apparently it's "correct"! http://a.imageshack.us/img78/5185/assembly1452ts.th.jpg (http://img78.imageshack.us/i/assembly1452ts.jpg/)
