STARTER MESHING
When i got my car the starter pinion was chewed as was the flex plate. I have replaced them both and am reasembling now and i dont want to end up with same problem. The motor is on the crane and i have cranked it over a few times in a few diffent spots on the flex plate and it seams to be meshing fine but dosn't go all the way back into the starter when i stop cranking. (Stays just on plate) I asume when the motor is running the flex plate throws it back in. Who ever put the starter in bodged it up with the wrong bolts and had two spacer shims. THink the starter was off his BB just to get it going for me so im not sure its spaced right? So is there a rule of thumb for the adjustment (Meshing)?
Thanks Fellas

Is the starter a standard type or a high torque type?
Generally the high torque jobbies come with shims and multiple position locations so you can move the housing in the mount to allow for extra adjustment. If it's just a stocko type then there is not much you can do. Shimming it may hlp but if it's not seating firmly against the block then it will more than likely end up pushing away from the ring gear when you crank it.
Either track down the correct starter or get one of those HT jobbies that fit the different toothed ring gears.

I use an MSD starter. They come with the shims to adjust and they give a measurement for the gap between the teeth but cant remember what it is. But they said it is also the thickness of a paper clip.
Just found it. It's 0.020'' - 0.035''. They also say its normal for the pinion to sometimes not retract when you are doing it by hand.

Yeah, thats the same as mine... Much better fitment and mesh than a stock type I rekon.

what starters are you guys running?
I bought a cheapy high torque mini starter from ebay for mine, but i've been told to steer away from them.
It makes a high pitch whine when cranking over, and it didnt come with bolts or shims. I used normal bolts in it as the original bolts were too long. I've been told i need to use knurled bolts so the starter wont move. When it moves, it sometimes wont engage properly.
I'm looking to buy a new starter, but dont want to do this exercise again. Which one should i be looking at? I need offset bolt hole locations, and space is at a premium down there with tranny cooler lines and exhaust close by.
This is for a 454 big block with Turbo 350.
Any suggestions/feedback are welcome.
- CSR?
- MSD?
- Meziere?

I bought a Meziere ts 400, but the sucker was to big to fit behind my pipes :( Attempted to sell it here for $400(yank retail $520us), but got no takers.
I ended up getting a CVR5323M, great little starter and has worked faultlessly :)

I looked at that Meziere you had for sale, but it is for inline bolts holes...
How much was the CVR worth, and where did you get it from?
