Hi Guys...

I have never imported anything, and I am guessing don't have a great grasp of the costs.

I threw together a calc in excel. No doubt I have buggered it up...

Take a look:

Now its a bit messy... As I said, I just threw it together.

So what have I missed? Or stuffed up? :D

If you want an unlocked copy PM me your email. Perhaps you can use it or improve it.

Cheers
Nate

Could be a useful tool for many people.

If you have a gmail account, you could host template the spreadsheet with no 'data' in it using google apps, to allow people to use it to give them an idea on costs.

Nate,
Handy calculation sheet.
I reckon the Shafiroff motors are a bargain.

Customs clearance fee? When they run it through, they charge a fee. About $100 I think.
Also, should you be paying a duty on an engine made in the USA?
Australia and the USA have a free-trade-agreement.

I think this is where it gets messy because you may have to prove where the components come from.

"Pretty sure we have a free trade agreement with China too.. (puke)"

This might help you understand more about it... No we do not have a FTA with China.... but it probably will not be long as China & Rudd are in bed together & is known to be talking A LOT about it and having the Dept of Trade working on it too - and will be selling us out completely if that happens.. think about it..... Problem here is for ANY manufacturer in Australia .. will have to either close up and move off shore.. or you agree to a Lower wage and government agrees to lower business costs.... (ie your wages and conditions) to the level of Chinese wages, less any simple costs like shipping.. it will mean your real Work Choices will be you will take a Chinese competitive wage or take a hike - further eroding the need for production or manufacturing jobs - from simple manufacturing to HIGH END Skills... there was once hundreds of thousands of them..

Its really only worth having FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS.. with countries with a LIKE living standard as Australians have... like the USA, Canada, UK, France.. otherwise many of you guys will just start loosing more and more job opportunities, a lot like what has happened in North America in the last 15 yrs - and its happening here already. VOTE NO for a Chinese Free Trade Agreement.

The Duty Declaration for FTA statis of production identification can be REALLY TOUGH if the Customs OFFICER (as different from a customs Agent) wants to challenge you on any specific part. "Proof of Purchase Price Paid " is a big RED stamp they use on doc's.. and its up to you to backtrack and statisfy HOW you paid for it.. which is possible IF YOUR HONEST.. if you DISHONEST.. you LOOSE BIG TIME.
FTA Declarations.. if they are challenged.. really .. your best just to roll over and pay the applicable import duty .. as the chances of getting a tough Customs Officer to be satisfied the product and the materials IN THE PRODUCT are USA made.. is nearly impossible. But in the end.. so what.. just pay the tax..it used to be A a lot more... do hope that your parts gets here past the thieving dock workers ok and are not faulty. You are pretty much able to save saved like 50-75% over trying to buy it of the local thieving parts suppliers here anyway.... with or without duty.

Yup as per my previous post it was that easy for me as well.It also states on the shafiroff site that they recognise the duty free with Australia.

I really agree with you in regards to the FTA with contries of similar living standards to ourselves. An FTA with China (thanks for letting me know) would be pure suicide in my opinion. As you would know, it's a nightmare already. Head down to your local Great Mall of China and try to buy an Australian made product. Near impossible.

However, even having an FTA with the countires you have mentioned is a bad idea too, I feel.
Why? Because we can't compete with their populations and levels of production.
When they make a product, they have a massively larger population to market it to locally.
We don't, so out unit prices will never be as competitve as theirs before export.
They already have the abilty to land products here, freight-paid, for less than what we can, on our own shelves!
Freight is another thing too. We pay more per tonne in shipping because of fewer tonnage being exported.
The only thing in our favor at the moment is a dollar that's worth less, and as soon as we get stronger, our prices rise, we lose exports, the dollar drops and we're weaker all over again.
As much as I love duty-free Camaro and engine parts, we must use duty to protect our own industries.
Look around guys.. There ain't much of it left.

yes.. but it will suit CHINA to an extreme for us to be a FTA country..it will lower the cost of technology and expertise we have .. that they can access..that THEY also NEED... IF they can push our standard of living down further & Rudd is so happy to oblige China with anything they want... Unfortunately we are getting in to politics now and that's not really for a forum like this.

Not about to discuss the politics behind the FTA and so on.. Just what it would, could and has already done to our economy.

Totally agree we don't need to have free trade agreements with "Low cost countries", the trade will only go one way and we will lose our expertise in manufacturing in a generation or less.

No F...in way, is my opinion

Rant over.

Origin is pretty simple, sender just needs to declare it is Made in USA from USA originating parts, and say the country of origin is the USA.

There is actually no rule that says a declaration is required, as this is considered a blockage of "free trade" but the people doing the clearance in the freight companies are now asking for a declaration of some sort as too many people are rorting the system and trying to route stuff through the US, and customs can choose to sieze a shipment for audit, and the declaration up front smooths things beleive me.

Bettter to organise this in advance.

The other option is to (also) declare it is a replacement motor for a 1968 Camaro for example. There is no duty on replacement or original parts for cars over 30 years old.

On a Chevy, both of the above situations are true, so its not like there is a shonk being pulled! :)

Really?

How do you declare that?

Oh I have soo much to learn. :(

Don't get too excited.. duty is mainly 5% or 10% on your retail.. but compounded by GST.. you really will be better off focusing on real cost like what you pay for it or waiting till you can get free freight inside the us or a 10-20% off special or something... try not to get too involved in escaping tax's - often you may find the parts 10-30% cheaper at one place or another OR cheaper here too depending on what you need.
