View Full Version : What Shocks Do You Suggest?

As touched on in my 'new diff thread' (http://www.usmuscle.com.au/Forum/showthread.php?t=2936 ) my old rear air shocks are cactus. To the point that yesterday the most stuffed /formerly-frozen one dropped & the tyres started rubbing pretty badly.

So looks like some shocks are next on the list! FYI, I have 67 (ie-mono)mounts, even though three leaves.

My first reaction was to dig deep and go some adjustable Koni's at around$350pr (apparently modified HQ ones, according to importer Top Performance, as the Camaro-specific ones are too soft for our Aussie tastes). However, the standard style units are about half the price at East Coast etc.

I'm also wondering if adjustable is worth it, as I'm certianly not going anywhere near a racetrack (circuit or 1/4), but if it helps tailor the harshness or bottoming out, then I'm keen.

Matching front Konis are $280ish pr. Nothing 'wrong' with my current fronts, except the top rubber is totally perished. But the front bottoms occasionally. They identical to HQ, yeah?

While I know there are some projects here where money is no object, I guess my question is: "Are better brand / adjustable shocks worth the extra coin, and which ones are the best ride & value".

Keen to sort asap, so any words of wisdom appreciated!!
(Yeah, other than "you get what you pay for")

I Have QA1 shocks back and front , definitely recommended .

So I assume QA1s would have to be ordered from the States? Any idea of the cheapest/quickest way to get them? Presume worth doing fronts at same time..

Otherwise will chuck some Koni's in if no other suggestions.

And pretty easy fit to do at home?

I have QA1's adjustable coil over's as well, only with the single adjustable shocks though. Recommended even if your not going anywhere near a race track Deano. Very handy for me as i adjust the settings to suit the street or the drags and whether or not i have 3 fat pricks in the back thrashing around Barbagallo at Powercruise :D

Get in touch with Phil from USAtoAUS, he may be able to save you some bucks ;)

Deano i have the adjustable Konis all round and although they are a good shock i would go for the QA1 s cos they are easier to adjust, with the Konis you have to remove the shock to adjust them..

Cheers

There's 4 different comp/ext optins for rears alone. Bit lost as to which I'd be looking at..? Assume price is per unit, not pair.

Ta for input guys, but have decided to grab some Koni rears as I want them in this weekend. Plus this build is simply not going to be 'absolute top shelf' for every single component - I just want to drive the thing!

Jamie, are your Koni's set at the softest setting? Or should I save time & go up one harder when fitting? Ta again guys.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with Koni's Dean, especially on a car thats a cruiser more so than a drag car!!

Deano i have the Konis cranked as hard as they will go but am gettin a bit of diff bounce on the street, that was with the big wheels though and i had em cranked to stiffen it up so they didnt rub.. I will be softening up now for a bit better weight transfer at the drags, the hard setting still hooked up though.

Cheers

Hey Paul, Slow reply coz been waiting for a break in the rain... Yeah, they ride sweet. The guards are still rubbing on big hits though - Not sure if winding up the shocks will make any difference - Is only rebound, not bump. http://www.toperformance.com.au/tech_fs.html
Guess botom line is she's now just too low for 275s

Hey Deano,

Howd you go with the Konis? ride any better than before? Easy to adjust? Im looking for some shocks when i get my rears reset next week so in the market for something. Where you get them from? and what kind of $$$ am i looking at?

Cheers,

Dan.

Hey Dan, pretty much same story as last post. Ride is def heaps better, but I'm trying to sort (unrelated) rubbing issues. Have not adjusted as assume that will not help (rebound only), but is an easy twist to adjust (out of car).

Top Performance have a list of all their sellers on website. Thinking around $500pr for rears? - Can check invoice when I'm home in a few days. Multi-leaf perch versions dearer. Fronts are cheaper - same as HQ. (Rears are re-bushed version of their HQ one). The guru there is Barry - Very friendly guy.

I Just Picked Up A Set Of Koni's For The Front Of My 67 Today.
I Got Em For $275 From Wilkonsons In Bayswater W.a.
I Got Quotes Off Two Other Major Suspension Mobs Here And They Were Up Around The $400 Mark For The Same Ones.......i Cant Figure Out How There Can Be Such A Price Difference Between Them All?????
We Will Be Fitting Them Up On Sunday Hopefully And Hopefully It Will Stiffen Up The Front End A Bit More Then The Existing Ones????

As The Old Saying Goes"it Pays To Shop Around Before Purchasing"

Sweet! Easy to fit yourself? I know the rears were a doddle but have not looked into what's required for the front end yet... (The Monroes in there at the moment are 'satisfactory' compared to other priorities).
