Graveyard … Burnt custom-made cars rest among the twisted metal inside the burnt out shell of the Pitman Trucks factory in Campbellfield. Picture supplied.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A CAMPBELLFIELD truck-wreckers factory was partially destroyed after fire ripped through the building last week.

Fire officers were called to Pitman Trucks Pty Ltd on Sydney Rd at about 2am last Friday.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade Commander Frank Besanko said the factory was well alight by the time fire crews arrived.

“It was so hot that it burnt through metal parts of the roof,” he said.

Commander Besanko said about 30 fire officers attended the scene and had the fire under control in about half an hour.

A handful of employees gathered at the site Friday morning as members of the arson squad assessed the damage.

Owners Kim and David Pitman said their business was insured.

Mrs Pitman said about a third of the factory had been destroyed, along with three family cars her husband had been restoring.

She valued the combined loss of the Corvette, Mercedes and GT Falcon at about $150,000.

Mrs Pitman said many of her husband’s trophies and pictures from his days as a racing truck driver were also ruined.

“I’m feeling pretty exhausted but I’m all right after I got over the shock,” she said.

The company’s general manager Duane Williams said computers and paperwork were also lost.

“We’ll salvage what we can but it is a setback we don’t need,” he said.

“But nothing’s unbuildable – we can start again.”

Detective Senior Constable Kevin Murdoch from the Arson Squad said the cause of the fire was unknown and his team was still investigating.

Det Sen Const Murdoch urged anyone who might have might have seen anything suspicious between 1am and 2am Friday to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

There you go.
