View Full Version : Alternative to Autometer gauges

I saw on one Wild68's threads that he's had some issues with Autometer gauges.
I was considering the Autometers but the price is quite high and if they have problems I'd rather steer clear of them.
Are the Autometer gauges unreliable?
Does anyone have experience with the Smiths gauges?
I don't mind the Smiths gauges as they would suit the stock look of my dash and interior. (68 Camaro)
Any experience or info?

Had the Sport Comp series in my '57 for over 10yrs now and never had a problem. Got the silver Ultra-Lite series in the Camaro and only problem i had was a blown diode in the tacho which caused the shift lite to stay on all the time. Had to send it back to Rocket to get fixed.

There are a heap of different styles by Autometer and I've never had a problem with any of mine.
Don't buy the cheapie "Autogage" gauges if you want quality.
For my 69 Camaro where the dash is black and chrome, There are 2 "Street Rod" styles and a "Traditional Chrome" style.
I have the Traditional Chrome gauges for my console pod.
But, there are a heap of others to choose from.

I got the Auto metre Pro comp Ultra Lite and both the temp and the oil pressure guages have failed.. havent had all that much use either. I know they are the "cheaper" guages but they are still Auto Meter and i expected more!

In my previous car I had a full set of speco gauges, bloody unreliable so I switched to the autometer ultra lite series and they worked great(fuel gauge fluctuated a fair bit but you got an average). Will be fitting a full compliment of autometer into the camaro when I get that far.

Im looking at these three combos..
Autometer : Obvious choice, but so "done already" and a bit expensive with the billet dash.

Classic Industries : More old skool and not so common, but almost as must as above without the bling billet dash..

Or Dakota Digital : Almost half the price of the two above and can swap between mph/kph at push of a button.. only down fall is the mustang setup appears to have three tachos.. (bit of overkill eh)

I went for the Stewart Warner Powerline series. I like the old school look.

I should be able to beat your best price on new Autometer products. If you decide to go Autometer, shoot me the part number and your best price and I will give it a shot.

Was talking to the local speed shop this morning and my mate reckons that the Pro comp Ultra lite are one of the best and im the only one he has heard of having dramas.... he suggested maybe go to a liquid filled to eliminate any chance of vibration causing the damage. Burnouts are pretty harsh on everything in a car.

Just don't buy liquid filled fuel pressure gauges..
If you've ever had one and searched forever for a low fuel pressure problem.. There's your answer.
