What apature and shutter speed ect was used in the above pic?
Fairly certain it was 30 & 1.8. Possibly 50 & 1.8. ISO was probably around 400.
Can't remember. With most shots, if I'm not rushed, I'll take a couple with different settings, and then one on Auto - just to be sure I get the look I want. Can't always be certain looking at the LCD screen. Need to get me one of those magnifying view-finders.
Then i play with them in either Lightroom or Photoshop, which definitely alters the setting perception.

Thanks Russ looks good.
I heard but am yet to try a higher ISO setting and doing HDR with it apparently can give a really old picture look.
Ill have to sus it out though the guy isnt the most reliable source.
Not sure what that person is talking about, but there are much better way's to go about getting an older looking picture.
The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the image becomes to light - the more light, the grainier an image potentially becomes. Once an image has a certain amount of visible grain, it's very hard (re: impossible) to properly go back. To get the best image you can, you'll want the ISO to be as low as possible.
Getting an older aesthetic to an image is something you'll want to tackle in post-processing - Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom etc. Such unique & specific looks are very hard to do straight out of the camera - and truth be told 99.9% of cameras don't have the manual controls to allow you do anything like that anyway - unless you go out and buy an actual old camera and a roll of film.
If you don't mind me asking, what Camera do you have and do you use any kind of software? (not MS Paint) :D

I have cs4 design pack and a cannon d500 with two lenses and tripod want to buy a lens with a low aperture soon though. What do you use for a dated effect?
Cool. That was my last camera.
CS4 Design pack has Photoshop right? if so, you're golden.
Here's a few of the above shot, that took me all of 2 minutes in Photoshop using this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4x8G707HgY4

They're quick & nasty and took mere moments to do. You spend some time fooling around with Photoshop and you can create some fantastic looking images.
If you ever want to know how to do something, chances are someone has put up a tutorial on Youtube. A great way to learn without all the guesswork.
With the Canon 500d you can save in the RAW format. They're big and eat up a lot of memory card space - but it gives a much better platform to work with when trying to create something in PS.
And another question ... do you know anything about picture styles on your Camera, and have you changes them at all?
If not, I'll run you through it. Very simple, and again, it'll allow you to get to much better finished product.

Howd you do that vintage looking one! that wicked
Yea i save all mine as RAW and convert to JPEg when i need.
CS4 design suite has photoshop illustrator fireworks and other things.
I dont know hwo to change my camera setting if you do thats great would love to hear :P
If you shoot in RAW, there's no need to change Picture Style as the RAW format doesn't use them. The image quality is only effected by the ISO, shutter speed etc.
Picture Styles are only used if you're saving straight to JPEG, as they allow the camera to do some on-board processing before compression.
Each picture style setting: Standard, Profile, Landscape, etc, has a different Sharpness, Contrast & Saturation combination that gives each photo a unique look.
If you're shooting RAW though, those settings are bypassed - and you do all your adjustments in post-processing.
If you plan on shooting video though, you should change them if you want maximum processing abilities later on.
In your cameras menu you will find Picture Style.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d99/rookskickz/MyPhotography/Canon-PS-1.jpg
Click on it and you get a few options: Standard, Profile, Landscape, Faithful, Neutral, Monochrome + 3 User Defined settings.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d99/rookskickz/MyPhotography/Canon-PS-2.jpg
Click on the User Def. 1 and edit it like so: Select the Neutral picture style, then turn both the Sharpness & Contrast all the way to the bottom, and turn Saturation down 2 notches.

A really easy way to do a basic old photo in photoshop is....
Go to "image - adjustments - hue/saturation" and slide the saturation slider down. Gives a nice washed out colour look anyone can do.

That's really bad considering that HotRod Magazine rebuilt a 67 327 (or 350) Camaro back to stock specs and it passed California's EPA emission standards of the mid-late 90's.
Proving the point about old cars being gross poluters is crap.

Magic shot Jordan...but agree on the angle change. You have some real talent there.
Agree +3.
The angle is too much. Tilt it clockwise so that the roof of the tall buildings in the background are horizontal. Adds a level plane to the image. You'll find most people will naturally tilt their heads at the current image to that position.
Unfortunately, I'm assuming this image was actually shot this way and not tilted in post, so tilting it to correct would lose your corners.

Its a sweet photo, but agree that the angle seems wrong somehow..
Dont care so much about the background, but the car is in an obscure plane, so its unnatural to look at. (Additionally the fence above the rear window looks artificially blurred so is distracting.. to me)
Course, I cant take a photo to save me self.. so not one to judge.
Love your work mate.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the comments about that last Camaro pic.
I really do appreciate the feedback.
The excessive angle was there only because it was the only way I could get the sun in as the car sped away - and lessening the angle in PP took the sun out of the image all together.
Just thought I would post up an image I worked on last night for publication.

Whilst we are looking at biscuit tins, here is one with my late father in laws 1926 Ford Model T Speedster. The car is embossed in the tin but the photo doesn't show it.
Engine had a Frontenac Overhead valve conversion head, Model A crankshaft with counterweights, high dome high comp pistons, Holden 3 speed crash box as well as modified Ford transmission, column mounted adjustable timing, Customline rear brakes (Model T brakes were inside the trans so if you broke a tailshaft you had no brakes), Ford Laser rack and pinion steering. As silly as it sounds looking at the picture, the car was lowered 4 inches.

If you think they are sidewall wrinkles from hard acceleration -as opposed to just sitting there and posing for the photo.. I say you don't know what they should look like. :)
petrolhead
03-01-2012, 07:54 AM
I say you should Google some drag racing videos especially ones with a high speed camera then you will see that the inertia from the acceleration is the rim trying to tear away from the tyre most of the American Drag racing on Foxtell have these high speed cameras and do extreem close ups not only that you have a tyre that has low tyre pressure(compared to a normal car) but the tyre is "sticky" and doesn't want to move on take off if there were any drag racers on this forum they would back me up

I know what Steve was getting at and agree the tyres aren't wrinkled enough for an under power wheelie but, the slicks may have been pumped up more for the street, but then it wouldn't have enough traction to pull a wheelie, but the Cobra is a fairly light car, but maybe they put some compound down, but who'd be stupid enough to do that on a main rd, but, but.... Lots of buts. I don't think the photo was staged (who knows really?). Maybe the power was off and the nose was on the way back down when the shutter went?

minimal if any wrinkle
to edit a photo so there was no jack in the picture was near impossible in those days, and there is no sign of anything in the shadow and it would have to be a big jack to get the car up that high.
