Found some photos of the car from when I bought it. Scanned them so the quality isnt the best. This is what I got for my $10,500. RS with a big block sitting in the engine bay on two blocks of wood. Had about four other paint jobs under the black. Bugger all rust in it though. The only panel replaced was a rear quarter which had a hit at sometime and was covered in bog.

My partner couldn't believe I paid ten and a half grand for the "piece of crap".(I thought it was beautiful)

Then found out I couldn't keep it left hand drive if I wanted to modify it in any way. So off to get the conversion done

Holes for the ball vents were eventually filled in for a neater look

Thanks Ian

Hi Ian, it uses an HQ steering box. I'll put a pic of the setup in when I get my computer fixed. Having a few problems with it at the moment. If I did it again I think I'd use a rack for more clearance around extractors

Ian , a 'hq' is one of our local GM cars produced around 1972, very similar in configuration to the camaro. In my 69 camaro i used a aussie delivered RHD chev unit.

Who did your body work? Looks like Anthony Rachella's old shop at dry creek.
67cammy
02-03-2009, 08:13 PM
Yes it was Anthony. He did the conversion. The body and paint was done at Perfection Crash at Rosewater. Roger does the paint and George does the body work. It still has to go back to Anthony so he can get the engineers report done and get it through rego. Bit of a pain now with him being at One Tree Hill though.

This was hijacking Nevs thread there so I thought I'd move it to here. You could be right Steve about the wheel arch mouldings but I have my rears rolled so there wouldn't be anything there to attach them to. Looking at it now, I think it would look better with the gutter mouldings on there. Another 300 bucks!! Does this never end

In regard to your stripes etc, why not get mocked up in photoshop first? I agree with going vinyl first to try & then consider painting later when:cool: decide fave (surely wouldn't take that long). Bit is SUCH stunning paint that would not want to detract to much, just completment/finish off. A bit o chrome should do that nicely. Maybe even mockup some rocker moulds like these http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=290313894336

Hey Paul. 15x6 with 3 3/8" BS, 15x8 with 4 1/2" BS. 195x65 front and 27x10.5 Hooziers which have 8.3" of tread width. I have 2" blocks in there at the moment because it will have to come up to get it through its inspection but eventually I want to reset the leafs to where it sits now. No modifications to it. Bought it as it is. The bend in it was very close to the angle of the grill. Just got it from the local speed shop. The grill and the badge have been sold now and there is a standard 67 grill in there.

Oooh Deano you did good. That looks really similar in colour to mine and the stripe looks excellent in silver. I put the Camaro emblems on the gaurds today (nerve racking, drilling holes in the gaurds) and I've got the rocker panel moulds coming. Definitely putting the gutter moulds on and probably the wheel arch moulds too. I painted the 427 badges in white and tried them on the side of the cowl and I reckon they look pretty tough. I'll put a pic on soon. Thanks for finding that

Just wondering.. On 68 & 9s the hole there is used for the headlamp doors on Rally Sports for the vacuum hoses to the headlamp switch, but 67s were electric..
The other hole very close to that position was the power cable for the convertible top (yours is a coupe) or of course, the power windows..

Deano I'm not too sure. They say there's 8.3" of tread width which converted to mm is only 210. Just measured them and there is 210mm of tread on the ground. Just measured my 195 fronts and there is 160mm of tread width. So I'm guessing the 195 is section width which the back ones have 10.5". That converts to a smidge over 265mm. They are a lot wider than the 195's so I think that would be right.

No idea Dave, I just brought it down till it looked a match for the rear.
It's hard to tell because of the shadow.
The original looks as though the top of the guard is level with the top of the tread, the lowered one its just come down over the tread and is about where tread meets sidewall..
If you're really keen.. draw some 1/2" or 1" level markings on the tyre in chalk, then take a side on shot..
I can lower it to each of the marks.. and you'll have height references.

Yes..what do they call that? A conundrum? It will look good on the move but I won't get to see it! All I'll see is the interior which is a shame coz I love seeing these on the road. I'll be reduced to trying to get glimpses of its reflection in shop windows :(
Not much to do. Rear brake lines which Anthony is doing. Speedo cable and seat belts. Anthony has some belts to use for Regency and I have Morris three pointers here for after Reg. I think that's pretty much it. Oh...and maybe change the shifter to a Quicksilver.

Bugger the shop windows, keep your eyes on the road, unless you are stopped at the lights.
You'll have to keep your eyes on the other drivers gawking at your car.
Mine was nearly run off the road on when it was on the back of a tow truck because of some goose looking at the Camaro and not the road.
I've got a brand new Megashifter (I think it's a Megashifter) if you need to borrow something for the day.
It's for a LH drive though.

Here ya go Deano. Wheels are 15x6 with 3 1/2" BS. 15x8 with 4" BS (diff is about an inch shorter than stock). Tyres are 195x65's and Hoozier 27x10.5 which have 8.3" of tread width.
The rear suspension in the top pic is with a set of 2" lowering blocks in there (avatar). Im used to the height as it sits now without the blocks so Im not getting the springs reset as I planned to. The springs are from Calvert Racing (makers of Caltracs) and are the split monoleafs which Im pretty sure are 1" lowered (been a while).

10.5" = 266.7 or 265mm
27" tall - 15"(rim) = 12" /2 (each sidewall) = 6" or 150mm
265 X .6 (60series) = 159mm
265 X .55 (55 series) = 146mm
A 265/55 is closest which is 1" shorter than a 275/60, or 1/2 shorter from the center.
Searching 265/55-15 at Tirerack says: Sorry, there are no tires available in the size you selected. Please select a new size.

Well....believe me I don't want to sell. My work situation has taken a turn for the worse lately. Selling will free up some much needed funds. Although I have put it on Ebay I don't really expect or want it to sell. A lot of interest already but I havent seen many Camaros sell for decent money on Ebay. I guess Im just feeling the water but if the unexpected happens and the reserve gets met I'll have to take it. I cant afford not to :(. I'll still get something else but it will be something I can drive and do up at the same time. Most of this car is financed by the dreaded credit cards which is fine if you're working and can pay them off but not good when the work dries up. Anyway, it probably won't sell and I'll have no choice but to struggle on, and maybe the work situation will change. :)

Hey Dave,
Checked out the Nitro magazine article.
The 67 looks great, although I think some of the other shots you showed were a little better than those in the mag, I suppose they only have so much space. (But.. it still looks fantastic)
I see "USmuscle" got a little mention.
I'd suggest the current bid on Ebay is only 50% ($41K at the moment) of what you should take, but in the end only you know what you need to do.
I know it's hard but you have to take the emotion out of the decision.
Look at the numbers and take everything into account.
(BTW you can't even buy a decent HQ coupe for $30K now, and hatchback Torana's are even worse, the $'s being asked are getting ridiculous)
Keep the 67 if you can.

I recall a time when a GTS Monaro, SLR 5000, SS Torana and many of the other Aussie muscle cars were affordable but at the same time American Muscle Cars were way out of reach. I'm talking late 1980's and 1990's. I turned down an immaculate restored SLR 5000 for $6000 and a Bathurst Monaro for under $10,000. I was worried about the cost of petrol, insurance, etc, silly me! If I could have my time again I would of taken out a loan, bought a warehouse and filled it with Aussie Muscle!!!
A GTS HQ Coupe was recently advertised on Ebay for $75,000.
Keep the Camaro (if you can), now days American Muscle cars represent better value for money. They are also much cheaper to restore/repair due the availability of restoration parts. All the best with which ever decision you make.

Thanks for all your input guys. Due to your comments and pressure from the other half and the barman and..and...I've decided to struggle on and keep it. It is now off Ebay. One of the things I am not rapped about this car is the small block. So Im breaking it up and selling off and finishing the big block. Not the highly strung 427 but a (cheaper) mild 454. Hyper pistons, cast crank. I already have a lot of the gear for it so wont take much to get it together. I'll put it in before Regency so it gets registered with the big block. So very soon I'll be pulling the motor. I feel a bit regenerated now. Then mini tubs and Autodrags and I'll call it quits. Question.. can I use the same engine mounts from the small block? Thanks for all your positive comments. :D

Hi Dave I've got a couple of aussie muscle cars that I absolutely love but I reckon the gen 1 camaros are gods gift to us rev heads and I also reckon that if you did sell it you be kicking yourself for years as we've all been there done that. And also your asking price in my opinion too low for a car of that quality and I agree with Steve that if you can then just park it till you get cashed up go from there. Good luck with your situation and I hope it works out your way. Cheers Brett

You can use same mounts, but...
The GM BBC mounts shifted the motor up 1" and over to the right 1" for header clearance on steering column
I don't have the frame mounts any more as I gave those to Ray
But I think I have a spare set of brand new motor mounts, let me check the garage...

Chris, I can use the motor mounts I have on the small block at the moment right? I have small block frame mounts. If I use small block frame mounts does that also move the motor forward or backward? 1" higher for the motor is ok coz I want a 4" cowl anyway. Am I better off using small block frame mounts or big block?:confused:
cluxford
30-03-2010, 12:16 PM
Dave, I'm no expert but here is what I do know
BBC needs to move for standard header clearance (and break booster clearance).
So if all standard best to use BBC frame and motor mounts, will move motor up and to the right (does not move it forward or backward as far as I know)
If doing after market headers, you can get away with SBC frame and motor mounts
As mine was pretty custom anyway, I actually just have frame mounts (BBC) and a half inch spacer between the frame mount and the block. I did this to get the motor sitting down lower
Not sure if the above helps or not, but yeah you can use SBC mounts, but might have clearance issues (will fit but might be real tight)
Here's mine

Well...yes I have been laying low lately. Not much happening at all but it seems that may change next week (fingers crossed). Ready for my little rant?
My financial situation has been getting worse lately and have seriously been thinking of selling to dig myself out of a bit of debt. It seems Ive been living a Camaro lifestyle on a Hyundi budget. Anyhoo Ive been trying to get the car in to the guy who will be doing the engineers report and getting it ready and taking through Regency for over a year now with a few promises over the last four months of " I'll have it in a couple of weeks". Finally it looks as though it is going to happen as they called me last week ( Ive always contacted them) to say the tow truck guy will pick it up sometime next week. Woohoo! Sort of bitter sweet coz Im 99% sure Ill have to sell after its registered. Not before I do a bit of cruising though. Have to go on one of those Zipple cruises for sure.
Changed back wheels on the car. Plans were to shorten the diff after rego for the deep dish rims but I dont see the point of doing that if it has to go so I have 4-1/2" BS ones on there now. Here are a few pics as of this morning with 1-1/2" blocks. About to go out in the shed and take them out for next week. Not looking forward to it as its 36 here today!

Thanks guys. Definitely not a decision I would choose to make if I didn't have to but it may be the only way out for me. I'll get something else though if I do have to take that path but I really hope it doesn't come to that.
Theres always the 31 million dollar Lotto on the 31st.

Are you using a new engineer or the original person?
67cammy
06-12-2010, 05:24 PM
No the original. He has it down to a fine art so there will be no dramas getting it through. He'll just change whatever needs to be changed. I doubt before Christmas but you never know. If he gets stuck in to it it may happen which will be unreal after all this time. And to think my original plan was to spend about 20k to tidy it up and drive it! That plan definitely didn't work, that was spent just on body and paint! :o

Hey JJ, that's a very interesting idea. I will have to look into that one. I'm pretty sure here in SA they just came up with some new laws to make it harder for anyone to hire out their car for weddings. Why is it always SA? I'll do some research on that one but it is a good idea.

Hey Nev, well they have the car. The engineer has supposedly looked at it. I was told they'd get stuck in and have it for two weeks and I think that was a couple of months ago now! They did ring me last week and let me know I cant have my little indicators under the bumper so they are changing those. I wouldn't think it will be in there too much longer.. but then it did take a year and a half for them to take it off me to do what they're doing. Maybe this week (joke).

Dave , I think you are right about wedding cars. I heard a few blokes got asked the question about doing weddings in private cars a couple of times.
I believe they were just helping out family members though.
Hope to see your car on the road before the weather turns to crap.

No Nev. I think my two weeks has now gone past three months! I'm over it all at the moment. If I ring it makes no difference whatsoever. Just get told this or that and nothing comes of it.
Just holding my head above water at the moment so the only cruising I'll get out of it when I get it back is between the time it gets put on the market and the time it gets sold. :(

I'm not really sure what needs doing at the moment as I haven't been in touch with them for about a month. I'll ring them on Tuesday and see where we're at. It didn't go in needing that much. Rear brake lines, engineers report and a few small bits and pieces. I had already driven it about 200k's on permits so that gives you an idea of where it was.
Gary, no this is on top of the conversion. He was talking $2,500 to finish what needed doing and getting it through Regency which I thought was OK but what it ends up costing may be a different story. I may be in touch yet about your contact (wish I had it before it went back in). Cheers.

Just a short progress (lack of progress?) report. The day I was going to ring them they actually rang me first. Saw their name come up on the screen and thought you beauty it's ready to pick up...nope. They rang to ask me if I wanted the boot lined! I couldn't believe it. They know my financial position and my plans to possibly sell. Asked where we were at and told everything is done and just waiting for the engineers report as he "went on holidays for two weeks". This was on Thursday 17th and told they will find out what is happening and give me a call Friday or Monday. That was two weeks ago now. Should have asked what Friday or Monday I suppose! The two weeks I was told it would take has now hit four months I think. I'm beginning to think I'll be driving a Gopher before I'll be driving the Cammy.

Just got some quite excellent news. The car went through Regency today and after having five inspectors looking at it, is nearly there for rego. The only thing that let it down today was that it was too loud. Was 102db and needs to be 96. So its off to the exhaust shop next week and then another inspection where they only look at the exhaust.
Going up to the shop tomorrow morning to see what has been done (I haven't seen the car for six months) and have a little drive. Steering wheel had to go which I suspected it would. But basically I'm a happy chappy. YAY
Zipple cruise here I come. Then I'll see if I can't blow it up at Tailem Bend on the 20th Nov!

Well the car has successfully gone through Regency! Thought I would be more excited than I am but it's probably because of the bill I received. After being told he'd have it for about two weeks and cost about $2,500 and then it taking 7 MONTHS and nearly $7,000 it takes some of the shine off of things. Granted there was other things to do on top of what he quoted but GEEZ MAN!
Pick it up on a permit this afternoon and drive it home from One Tree Hill which is about an hour and a half. Register it tomorrow and get bent over one last time to cough up for stamp duty.
Next month will put up pics of my first venture onto the drag strip. Running against my son in his VL Turbo. Wanted to do this for ages. He should cream me but I reckon I'll get him off the line for a few feet. Might need nitrous. :D

Cheers guys. I think Im well and truly over the rim changing Deano. The trip back went pretty good. Stinking hot out in the sun and it sat mostly between 180 and 190 and started creeping up over 200 in the bumper to bumper crawl through Glenelg. Came back down when I got on the expressway so overall pretty happy with that.
Got in the garage and noticed a couple of leaks though. One on the diff and one at the pointy end somewhere. I'll check that one out on the weekend.
Can someone point me in the right direction here. On the diff there is a breather? Is it supposed to be really loose and spin around in your fingers? I have oil coming out of this.

yup should be loose, oil coming out though maybe the diff is too full? Or, I have seen the breather put in the wrong place(my diff) and the slung oil can slowly dribble out of it, yours isn`t in the housing like mine was though. Take the top off that breather and run a pigtail piece of hose with a hose clamp, so it still vents but won`t leak...problem solved.

Ive got a 9" :p and its breather is on top, spins which is normal, and after an oil replacement it usually oozes until it finds it level.

A couple of pics from the weekend. Had its first drive on full SA rego. Twas fantastic! Ran like a dream except for a squeak I have to have a look at in the front spring eye (solid bush in a Caltrac split mono).
Went down south to Victor Harbor and Goolwa. It was 10 deg cooler down there than Adelaide and the car loved the cool air.
Question: I have full manual reverse pattern T350. Is it doing any harm to start off in second gear on a level surface? It takes off effortlessly in second and when I use first I find I am pretty much changing into second straight away anyway.

My transmission builder (a chicken farmer, a lill bit country) and my mechanic (goat chaser) have said the same; if its auto leave it in auto. Mine was built to manual shift as well, but the rationelle is, if you can afford to fix it then drive how you want to its your F&ck(n box.. That what i got told by the trans guy. Then he said; it will give ya F*#kin 10 sec with 700 wet pussies under the bonnet.

No Nev the ones at Tailem Bend on the 20th. How weird is that. Having a choice of venues in Adelaide for Drag Racing! I was beginning to think we wouldn't see any ever again.
Tailem will be a lot more primitive than AIR and no track prep but should get more track time. They had 80 cars there last meet compared to AIR on the 26th with 200 street cars plus comp cars. And the power my car puts out track prep is no real concern anyway :o. Just mucking around at the moment but if the boy ribs me too much Ill have to hook up some nitrous and give him a real go :D.

I'm putting in the Morris seat belts at the moment. Can someone please tell me what these sleeves are for? They don't seem to fit anywhere. Or are they just for installation in other models.
11896
Hi Dave, I dont recall the sleeves for mine or can think of a place to use them. One tip is to give those bolts a quick spray of black paint. They look already painted but after a few months the surface starts to corrode. I spoke to Mr. Morris to complain about that and another problem and he informed me they are not actually painted.
Cheers, Scott

11896
Hi Dave
They are supplied so that when tightening your seat belt bolt they fill up any slack between the bolt hole and the bolt and raise them off the metal work but allowing them to still move..
More common on new belts. Example: my seat belts when put in the installer put them on the rear bolts as the hole on the modern brackets were slightly larger.

Hi Paul,
Im using the aluminium bush that came with the Klippan belts on the short belt in the centre. Torqued to 50 ft/lb and they swivel nicely. These plastic bushes just dont fit anything. They're too wide to fit in any holes and they are also brittle (accidently trod on one and it shattered).
11897
Dave, I didn't have those bushes in my kit either?? Kinda weird.

11897
I didnt use them, the plastic ones look like rubbish when put on, I used the proper camaro ones, not a full bolt thread, and the proper OEM ones have the right blank thickness, on the front seat belts i ordered a different set which alow the two clips to be used so they swing round well.
