Ok, The time to start the rebuild has come, The parts have been ordered and will leave the States soon.

As you can see the car looked OK before we started, but as I started to strip it down I found lots of things that I was not happy about. They have put partial floors in and done a terrible job. My painter isn’t very happy about the rear Quarters either, so there won’t be much original metal by the time I am finished. I am replacing the full floor, Boot floor, firewall , both rear quarters and since I am shaving the drip rails and putting a 6 point cage in it I might as well replace the roof as well, as it will make the cage install easier.
I am hoping to get the car ready for SummerNats 2010. The car will be pro touring but will see regular ¼ Mile action.

Hi Chris

I am waiting to see what the dollar does over the next 6-8 months, if it improves a fair bit I am going to put in a 572 Cube F2 procharged engine about 1200 hp on pump gas, if not I will probably stick with the 509 and pro charge that with a smaller F1 pro charger.

The engine and trans where the only things I didn't buy when I was at Prodogy Custom, thanks buy the way for putting me on to them as Frank, Lisa and Michael are fantastic I went to the shop a couple of times and had dinner with them, I will catch up with them at SEMA 2009

Hey JJ
I have had some rendering of different colors done by a guy in the States called CARTER HICKERMAN DESIGN he worked with we on the body mods and colors and I have narrowed it down to 2 but my Wife likes the blue and I like the orange, we will decide close to paint time.

Greg,

Prodigy are awesome, reckon I have spent over $12K with them.and still more to come yet.

CHD does some awesome stuff, i have seriously thought abut getting a render don on my car...how much did it cost may I ask ?

Now on those colours.....they both lok great.

My car wilk be close to that orange. I want either Candy or Pearl yellow. But it will be close to orange. Not gold, not orange and not bright yellow. I am thinking a red base on a yellow candy. Either way I vote with your wife that Orange looks great.

572 Pro-charged.....Hmm, I have been debating blowing the 632. It's 800Hp now, but a big blowe on top would look great I think (problems with rego so may do it after rego). But the more and more I dwell on it the more and moe I think an 8/71 will end up on mine

Nev,

I have already shaved the rails on mine.

And the glass has been test fitted both front and back, it will be flush mounted.

We welded a small bead of metal on the insid of the frame allround and test fitted he glass into it. had to grind a bit to smooth it out.

Next tme I am at the shop I'll sit the glass in it and take some pics.

Yes mine will be flush front and back. I am going the smooth look all round.

Shaved rails, flush glass, flush door handles (off a VT Commodore), delete all side markers etc etc etc....I love smooth.

Reason I ended up going down the path I did is that if glass ever gets broken it's easily replaced.

I was going to delete the side markers but the Engineer has issues with that as the indicators aren't visible from the sides at all. I also wanted to shave the door handles but you can't race a car without door handles, so I guess I will have to live with them.

Hey Muggz

I was talking to Frank the other night, the flush fit glass still isn't quite ready.

Yes they are great people, I was there a bit early and I missed out on seeing them building the car they built for SEMA, it was just getting stripped down well I was there, but I did get to see Michaels car Prodogy, what an amazing car for some one so young to put together. Frank was telling me that SEMA was a great blast and I am going to try to hook up with them next year. Micheal got to meet up with Chip Foose and Chip was passing out heaps of praise for him, saying what a talent young builder he is.

On the parts bit I am talking to Frank about sending my panels now and all the rest of my stuff when its all together so I should have some stuff leaving in the next week or 2 and then the second lot just after Christmas, so if you need anything, you may be able get it in with my stuff.

18-12-2008, 08:18 AM
Hi Chris

Yes I am doing the panel its all really simple up to the quarters then I have a mate who is a beater who will give me a hand. I am at a cross road right now as I was talking to Frank and he suggested that I Chanel the body 40mm so that the car will sit lower and have more travel and better clearance underneath.
The only original metal will be the inner structure, Sills and upper and lower cowl, the roof is OK but since I am going to shave the drip rails and put in a cage I might as well replace it as well. I just wasn't game enough to do it all at once.

cluxford
18-12-2008, 08:43 AM
I am envious, I have no clue how to do panel work I screw it up every time.

I seriously thought about channeling also, and agree it would handle way better.

I the end I just went really low with newer better suspension, my plan is to run 100mm ride height and I raised the shock top mounting points up soI will have a full 2" of shock travel, so I stil think I will be OK. I don't plan on doing auto-cross with it so I should be fine

Very, Very nice mate!

That soda blasting finish sure looks the goods. Leaves the galvanising in places where it is.

I had been tossing up between full chemical dip, and soda, looks like soda is the go.

Understand that a soda blasted finish somehow prevents instant rusting and gives some time to work on it without needing to spray with oil or some other preservative like lanolin.

Hi RSZ28

I own a soda blasting shop here in WA, don't belive all you here, the reason it doesn't rust straight away like sandblasting is that it leaves the Zinc on the panels as they were pressed, I have had the car in bare metal now for about 6 months and it has been to a few car shows as a trade display, but I keep it coated in Inox Lanox.

What is soda blasting like at getting into places that the gun doesnt have direct access to, like around corners in the upper inner B pillar areas between the outer skin and the inner structure.

And does washing out with water afterwards get most/all of the soda out?

Thanks, Ian

Hi Ian

How long does a regular bare metal panel last without starting to go "orange".

It will probably last a month or two depending on moisture in the air.

What is soda blasting like at getting into places that the gun doesnt have direct access to, like around corners in the upper inner B pillar areas between the outer skin and the inner structure.

It requires a direct hit it has no rebound, so you can only blast what you can see.

And does washing out with water afterwards get most/all of the soda out?

It is best to blow and vacum the body out really well as it is a very light dust and comes out easy, then I supply my customers with an acidic detergent to wash the car in, It neutralises the bi carb, gets rid of any surface rust and inhibits area's that you cant se or reach.

It's amazing how fast you can get things done with the right tools.

You're probably looking for something to cut up next

Hey Chris,
I am like you, everything has to be done right and its amazing how much surface rust and stuff is on the inside of the panels, at least now I can blast it in there, prime and paint it prior to putting it back together. This car will last forever. I have been following some builds on Team Camaro and they are a real help because I have never been anywhere near this deep in a build.

Whats the direction of this build now? I've noticed you're selling off a lot of things I thought you'd be keeping.. like seat frames, motor, diff... Are you going with a wilder BB combo or an lsx engine, a custom interior, and a 4 link rear?

If I had the spare money, i'd grab the motor, diff, and seats off you right now...

Hi Ray

The build is staying pretty much the way it always was going to be, Art Morrison front and rear clips, race inspired interior, and I was originally going to go 540 bb with a pro charger, but no matter how hard I try I can't get registration with a full cage (6 point), so I have got the ****s and have changed direction, the car will now be based more around general motor sport, I will install a 4 point cage, enter some hill climb events and maybe even some Taga events?. The new drive line combo is a 440cub LS from Wegner Motor sport in the States, it will be around 700hp naturally aspirated. The trans is a Magnum T56 and the diff is a fabricated 9'. Its a real shame that we have such a hard time registering things here in Aus, because it really does stifle enthusiasm, I always wanted a really fast TRUE street car not a pretend car, like a lot of the cars you see in Street Machine mag, and if I can't build it to drive regularly, fully roadworthy, to me its not worth it.

Why not start with a project car to begin with instead of a running going concern and a very nice one at that?

I suppose for what you paid and for what you would get in return for selling the bits off, it does make some sense. Was that the reason?

I was thinking a similiar sort of thing..

Alot of the goodies you've pulled out of your car to upgrade are the things people are envious of, and looking to upgrade to. At least if the dollar didnt recover, you still had some nice gear in the car.

Mitch, I had no real intentions when I first bought the car, to do anything much to it, then rego became an issue with a ladder bar rear end and I raced at the Nostalgia drags and it was to slow so I started looking into what I could do. I had it on a hoist and noticed some dodgy repairs underneath, and well thats where it all started, I HATE RUST, so I thought stuff it lets build something really nice, and here we are today.

I really love the build process, I have built other cars, but nothing like what I am doing now. On the panel side of things I had a panel beater mate who said you won't be able to do the panel your self, Not really the right thing to say to me, as I am lucky and can turn my hand to most things and love a challenge.

I guess we aren't well enough organised into a politically relevant force that sends a clear message and sways law makers through politics, vs the media delivered stereo-typification (thats a big word..... ) images of general and dangerous street hooning which does kill.

There's a thought...... :)

Certainly Queensland seems to "get it", and have 4+ drag strips and a thriving aftermarket industry. But then again QLD is very progressive and is seeing economic growth that outstrips the rest of the country (apart from all those jobs digging red rocks out of the ground in WA, which is as good as gold for this country!)

Hi Clayton, the tubs are from a company called Detroit Speed in the US, they are like a standard pressing shape so no problems with the pits as they look standard, since you are not allowed to tub.

I just like the idea of US muscle staying LHD, I noticed your thread on the co version it depends on how far you are going, the company that makes the sub frame I have purchased Art Morrison are now making a RHD version I believe.

Hi Paul, I really don't think a kit would help, you would still need to be able to do the install it which is probably the same skills required to fab it up, I have had little to no previous experience, but I can weld, I would recommend anybody to have a go it is great fun.

Nev,

It requires the removal of the chassis rails and reliefs in the floor for the front pick up points, none of this is an issue for mine as I don't have the rails in as, I have replaced the whole floor. The best part is I can run a 345 / 35 / 18 Drag Radials with a section around 14.5 without having to notch the rails.

Wow I can wait to see it finished:)

Hey Clayton, I take it from your avatar you got the ZD, congratulations mate.

Hang in there man, it will be worth it. As we discussed at Big Al's it would be awesome to get back a car with that sentimental value.

Strange that metal can be sexy...

I take you're dumping exhaust at or before the diff? Side pipes maybe...
Cant see much getting squeezed through there otherwise. :)

When you say adaptable between 3 and link... I take you dont run all 5 links at the one time.. 3 for track or 4 for strip ? Or is it all 5 fitted, and its usable in both scenarios??

Keep the updates coming Greg.. Cheers

No, at this stage Birchy the exhaust will still exit at ther rear, I will just clearence the boot floor for more room.

For cornering applications, you run a 3 link, with the upper/outer bars removed. For drag racing, you run a 4 link, with the upper/center bar removed.

You never run the car with all 5 bars connected.

WOW Greg, awesome bit of gear there mate. Brilliant engineering work there to be able to switch between circle work and straightline action in the one rear end setup and with anything above 700hp your going to have a lot of fun doing both. I'm putting my hand up now for a shotgun ride in both setups :D

Greg,

Nothing to add apart from what has been already said, just awesome.

The angle on those mounting points on the top outside bars, will they still allow you to have a back seat (are you planning on one). I had my mounting points on my 4 bar, customised so I could still run a back seat, also played around with teh tubs for the same reason.

And ah yeah, you'll have to go blown 1200hp !!

Chris,
I have to do a rear seat delete because of running a cage anyways.
Just because you got full support for a blower don't go sharing it around here, I already get enough crap from Frank.

OK just a quick update, I have changed the name of the thread, to better reflect the situation.

While at SEMA I place the order for all the parts for the engine, Its a 462 RHS combo running Manley, Jessel and Callies parts. Hoping for around 750 HP at the flywheel.

The car was delivered to a Perth rest shop called Rowe & sons a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully I will have some update pic's soon.

This is a new rendering of how the car will look, the color is Sting red with metallic silver stripes.

No Chris, it has been every color you could think of, but I came back to needing a solid color, so it can be matched easily, hopefully I wont need to but **** can happen when racing.

Hi Ken,
no real progress, it's in panel prison. The motor is not together as Carl Wegner is still sorting out the final CNC program of the heads for RHS. but there has been heaps of planing going on with the set up of coolers for the diff, trans and power steering, Mark Stielow has been very helpful on what I will need, and I will use a similar set up to his car. Working out the dry sump tank placement has been a mission, trying to keep the weight back of the nose of the car, I have finalized it will go where the passenger side cowl is, The guys from Ironworks have put there on a project they are building and it fits well. hopefully when it gets out of panel prison it should move ahead at a reasonable pace.

OK, time for an update.
The guys at Rowe & Sons have been flat out on my car the last 2 weeks and hopefully it will come home in the next week or two, so I can start on my part.
I will be fitting the car up with the suspension and making sure all the other parts fit, It will then go back to them, they will make the close out panels over the rear suspension and get painted.
I know you all like pic's so here it is now.

The latest Pictures from today, all the front sheet metal is Aluminium. The front guards have been a real mission to get right, they were assembled wrong and had to be un picked and re welded. They should have all the gaps where they want them tomorrow, then they will start to weld it all out.

I know we looked at them when we were at sema Greg but can`t remember, how much lighter are the aluminium than the steel front end panels? Are you running these for pure weight savings?

Ken, it's about 45kg savings, and yes I am running them for weight savings, by getting the weight of the front of the car, it will help in trying to get good balance in the car.

wow that`s pretty good weight savings, I wouldn`t have thought there was that much savings to be had. If I want to save 45 kg off mine I just will cut off my left leg, don`t need it anyway with an auto :)

Greg, great to see such awesome progress, what's your target for completion, to you have a tack event (Targa Tasmania maybe) in mind for it ?

You know someone must be working on carbon fibre stuff as well, it's getting a lot cheaper these day, but still 45Kg saved is huge !

Have you picked a colour yet - still red ?

Hi Chris, not really sure about a completion date as many have come and gone, but I really hope to have it finished in the next 12 months.

I am building it with some racing in mind, I would really like to do Targa West and Targa Tasi, but I will have to see where it will fit in.

Yeah I looked at carbon fibre, but decided on the ally, It will have carbon fibre inner fenders and spoilers, but they will all be painted.

Yes It's definitely red.

No not much Birchy. the car is at home waiting on parts before going back to the shop, the floater rear end parts have been the hold up, they are at Moser getting welded into the diff housing at the moment. Once the sub frame and rear clip arrive, it will be back at the shop for more sheet metal work.
