Well, I suppose I better get some details down before I start the long and loborious rebuild process of my 68...

I have been looking for one for a while now and finally found something within my budget and to my liking in QLD. It arrived last Thrusday after a month long shipping fiasco through AutoTrans. It also arrived with a broken boot spoiler and gouges in the paint from some knob jockey pushing it from the back...

The car also rocked up as a non runner due to the starter motor and ring gear being lunched by the tools continually attempting to start it after it had already begun slipping.

The AutoTrans guy I spoke to told me that "It's common on these old FORD's mate"... What a Muppet!

Any way it's now in my garage awaiting some loving.. The intention is to firstly get it to a running state and then attempt to create a plan of attack as to how and where I am going to start the rebuild.

I have new floor pans (full sections) on the way from the States now as I knew that they needed to be done and the rear strut tops also need to be repaired. The boot floor seems to be solid and I can only imagine it has it's fair share of bog hiding all manner of nasties under the paint work. The chassis also looks solid and I'm hoping there won't be much work needed in that area.

I don't have a huge budget for the car and my wife and I are forcasting a 7 year build at this stage...

What do I want to achieve with the car?

I luuuurvvvv the Pro Touring look and will more than likely go down that road. I have 18" front and 20" rear polished Coys C5 rims and they will be the basis for the look I'm after.... It also has a steel 2" cowl hood and will be bumperless.

Anyways, here are some pics of what I am starting with...

No plans on paint and driveline at this point in time.

The Mrs would like to keep it black and go black leather interior though... The car was originally Red with black stripes until the last owner decided to paint it black and I must admit I prefer the original paint scheme...

The driveline will stay as is for the short term as it's the body I want to get upto scratch first and foremost.

I'm not after a powerhouse at the moment (but that may change in the future) as I have my 13b turbo 808 for ****s and giggles...

http://a871.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/125/l_dcc0e2fb05be245a6a9d28e9e5e98856.jpg http://a176.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/76/l_8e142fb6e37860b5f8e0214c2e7b666f.jpg

So i'll just get it to a drip less reliable driveline for now..

Mitch,
Your car looks nice in the photos, looks like you have good starting point.
Gotta luv a tidy 1st Gen Camaro.
Not sure about the seats though:)

Are you doing a complete strip down and rebuild or are you doing it piece by piece so you can keep it as driver?

Hey Nev,

I would like to keep it as a driver if I can, but I need to do the floor pans so that will obviously mean it will have to be stripped down to a fair degree.

Whats wrong with my 60's red velour pornstar seats and shag pile carpet?:D

Hey Mitch,
You can do the big jobs over winter and keep driving through the nice weather.
It's bloody frustrating having a nice car in the shed and not being able to drive it.
Give me black vinyl (it's good for seats too :D )

Thanks Nev,

Grabbed a permit and went cruising today... $12.55 for 48 hours which covers you for third party injuries and Shannons upped my policy for the same period to drive her...

The missus and I went for a bit of a run and she goes real nice!!! Didn't think it would have so much poke from the 350. Has heaps of compression and runs sweet....

Looking forward to tomorrow's cruise too........ :D

Thanks Mitch,
I inherited the 808 coupe when my grandmother passed away. She had it since 82. Done 67k miles. She runs the original 1600 and 4 speed manual. Everything is original except paint, side mirror, wheels and suspension.

No real updates from me except to that my court summons for my 'replica or immitation' plate was waiting for me when I returned home from work and I am due in court on the 7th of January... YAY lucky me! http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/wa/consol_act/rta1974111/s97.html

On a good note, my floorpans are getting closer to arriving on Aussie shores and I had a call from the photographer that shot my Mazda for PSC Mag and apparently Fast Fours wants to feature it as well. So I better pull my finger out and finish off the boot properly and stick my bigger turbo on it... as he wants to do the shoot next break.

Well, I can't say i've done all that much however I did replace the starter motor with a high torque jobby and it soooo much better. I was having problems with the other one as it just wouldn't stay in position. It kept pushing away from the flex plate no matter how tight the bolts were.

The new starter came with it's own birth cirtificate and dyno sheet... It has 9KW of stump pulling starting power according to the dyno sheet

I also took the old girl to my panel repairer/painter for him to give it the once over and then we can formulate a plan of attack. At this point were in two minds in which direction I should head. At this stage it's a matter of discussion and we'll probably make a decision after Xmas...

I also sold my rotor last week, so I now have the room to start pulling bits apart and since my floor pans have landed in Australia that might be the first port of call.

I think you should head in the Big Block direction Mitch :D :D

I wish I could chuck a BB in there!!! She's going to remain relatively stock in the mojo department for the time being...

Floor pans have been sent from QLD to Perth by road and shoulda been here but there is a heap of flooding on the road down so they are slightly delayed. I ordered shock mount repair sections for the rear as well and they should be arriving very shortly too.

The only other thing I've done to the car is looked at it...

I replaced the front tyres as they were a bit shabby and have purchased a new set of twenties for the rear as they were OK but not new ;)

The Mrs bought me a set of billet flamed rockers and breathers for XMAS and she just ordered a 15" Billet Oval Flamed AirCleaner for my B'Day as well. These are all sitting in the boot awaiting fitment.

So I suppose the plan of attack from here would be to rip into the floor pans and sort that side of things out. I still don't really have any idea of how I am going to go about rebuilding the car as yet. I'm just happy with the fact that I've got one sitting in the garage :D

Alright peoples.... It's time for something to happen.

Just got off the phone to my panel shop after discussions with my wife about which direction we will be heading and we have booked the 68 in tentativley for next month.

I will be starting to strip her down and hopefully have it ready for the tilt tray in about a month.

I'll be pulling the driveline as well and giving it a bit of a freshen up, but it will essentially be the same, just prettier.

Not sure if we're going to go Satin Black all over but it WILL be staying black and the engine bay will definately be Satin...

Floor pans are still delayed due to all of the flooding over East, however I'm told they will be here Monday/Tuesday. Still waiting on the shock mounts as well.

Can't wait to get it in the shop....and actually get some work done.... YEAH BABY!!!!!

Can't thank my wife enough for everything thus far!! She's the best!:o

Whats the plan? satin black maybe? or just floors at this stage

AUSCAMARO

Mrs doesn't like the Satin Black, so we're staying with Black but glossy, it has a metallic fleck now, but will probably go a solid black maybe with red or hugger orange stripes kinda like the Gen II in the pic below or with a bare metal stripe (if my painter is keen to try something different?)....

Well, I came home this weekend for a couple of reasons and one of those was to be to attend Big Al's for the 1st time and I enjoyed it immensely. Some awesome cars there.. I also got to meet Marty and some other like minded Camaro enthusiats.

Anyway, I think I gained a bit of inspiration from the show and today I had a bit of time up my sleeve so I started ripping the 68 apart.. I managed to dismantle the entire right hand side of the car including the interior and most of the dash parts. I also removed all the side glass and rear end bolt on bits.

Basically all the chrome work has been removed except for the front bumper at this stage.

The floors are scaring me a little, the US owner must have been getting wet feet as they have fibre-glassed the floors under the carpet. I new the floors were pretty cactus and I also new the shock towers were rusty but I got a bit of a shock when I saw the right rear shock tower. There aint much metal there!!!

The car has also had rear quaters done before and I think I'll have to be doing some work to tidy them up a little better.

So all in all, there is plenty of work to be done and I expect that I will have the rest of the car dismantled by the end of next break and possibly have the motor and box out as well. I'm flying back to work in the morning and will be back ready to get into it on Thursday...

This one stumped me as well. This is the instructions I followed to get mine out.

To remove the lock cylinder, place the key in the ignition lock and turn to the accessory position. Insert a paper Clip in the small hole to depress a button in the ignition switch. Keep turning the key counterclockwise and the lock will come out.

This is right.

It takes some patience.

I found out that after straigtening the clip perfectly with pliers it did not take long, the hole is sometimes hard to find as it similar in size to the clip so i found it takes a bit of giggling to find it.

Turn the barrel slowly and you will find that the clip drops into a hole in the mechanism whilst gently applying pressure pulling it outwards whilst turning, as per instructions. When you get it right then it will slowly pull out.

I have done mine several times now and its done in a couple of minutes, the first time it took around 20 mins.

GEE I HAVE JUST GONE BACK AND READ WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN! SO THAT THERE ARE NO MISS INTERPRETATIONS I DONT MEAN ANYTHING SEXUAL:eek:

Good luck.

I've still got so much to do and so little time to do it... I best be getting busy when I get home next week then eh!;)

Oooh, I can feel some busted knuckles coming my way. Atleast I have a bit more storage space now as we had a garage sale on the weekend and cleared out the back shed :D

Haha Yeah... Not complaining thats for sure...

They were quick with my rotor last time. In and out within 3 weeks if I recall correctly. It did go back in later for the engine bay, but that was my fault.

P.S. Speaking of the Rotor, the Latest edition of Fast Fours and Rotaries has just been released and my rotor is in it with a photo of me that makes me look like a tool!!

We're tossing up over whether to stay with black and add some highlights, or go with EGO Grey, which is a Ford colour  but it's very nice and I think it would suit the flowing lines of the 68 nicely.

Dropped in to see Clayton today before I flew back to work and they had already replaced the right hand floor pan and nearly finished the right hand shock tower. Progressing nicely thus far... and the welding work is second to none. The fabricator has taken the time to hand fabricate some extra support panels around areas such as the rear spring hangers too and is fully seem welding them for added strength.

Hit a bit of a snag though and that is with the front seat mounts there is a 'C' channel section that runs across the floor from rocker to tunnel and it incorporates the captive nuts for the front seat mounts plus adds structual integrity to the floors. These I do not hae and I have tralled all over Pontiworlds site to no avail. I have sent Dave an email to hopefully source them but I may have to end up using the originals and Hamish might have to unstitch them from the rusty pans?

Unless someone here happens to know of some that could be express posted?

Mitch

P.S. The guys at McAuliffe and Stoltze seem to think that they should be hanging panels and sorting gaps by Thursday. So far they are powering along..

It's all good Greg, they have decided to fabricate some themselves..

When I got the pans I also got the seat bases and it looks like under yours has captive nuts on a bit of plate spot welded to the bottom, mine just have the holes.

The originals have a heavy gauge 'C' channel type section under there that spans from the rocker to the tunnel, it actually looks like it could be a structual component.

You can see it in this pic. http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs037.snc1/2667_81425755488_777875488_1540813_6512926_n.jpg

Well, I dropped in to the Panel Shop today after our week in Kalgoorlie and had a quick squiz before I had to fly back to work.

Once again I was blown away with how efficient these guys have been!!

I took a heap of pics but can't currently host them as I am back at work and all the backdoor entries to hosting sites have finally been completely cut off. Bloody work internet restrictions!! It's probably only a matter of time before they kill USMUSCLE.com access!

Hopefully I will be able to upload the pics when I get back to camp in the morning after my shift. Doubtful though! :(

Anyway, all of the fabrication has been completed so that means that the floors are finished, the rear shock towers are done, the rear spring hangers mounts replaced, any other bit of rust has been cut out and plated/patched, the parcel shelf has been plated, the front chassis rails have been repaired (where the tie downs pulled them during shipping), all wheel arch trim holes have been filled as have the lower sill trim holes. All seems on the underside and the interior panels have been drip checked and are ready for painting.

They are now aligning all of the gaps, panel beating the front valance as it had a nasty bit of bog in one side and is a bit out of shape, trial fitting all of the panels and prepping the body ready for undercoating.

All going well it should be ready for the spray booth next week. They will be painting all of the hanging panels seperate to the car and will apply 2 to 3 coats of colour and 2 to 3 coats of PPG High Solid Clear. The engine bay and underside will be painted in Satin Black and then it will await it's reconstructive process back in my garage.

So hopefully some time next week after returning home from work I might get to see some colour on it?

The painter is a mate of mine.... and they don't want to be stuck with it forever... They have plenty of work on at the moment so decided to focus on this and make it their priority to ensure it is out of the way for other work that is waiting instead of having 3 partly done cars etc...

The colour has changed and is now decided on. I will leave it to your imaginations at the moment. Nothing that I have already stated, put it that way ;)

I always thought it would be months myself but Clayton has assured me all along that it would only be a short turn around. There have certainly been no shortcuts in regards to their quality of work. Everything is to a budget though and my budget did not include replacing every panel etc, so for the amount I am paying they are performing a terrific job, infact I would suggest that they have gone above and beyond so far as there have been things that they have picked up on that I didn't and they have repaired them within the agreed price.

So to say I am happy with their work thus far would be an understatement!! I suppose we shall just have to wait and see the finished product for a full conclusion eh:)

I need to sort the Trans out as it was holding top gear for some reason. T350 box and it looks to have been rebuilt not all that long ago when the motor was done. Replace the flex plate is it was running out of teeth due to the crap cheap starter motor that was fitted.

Full retrim, not sure on specifics yet but it will need new carpets, hood lining, door trims maybe OK, the maroon certainly isn't going to suit the new colour scheme so the seats need to be retrimmed, box the boot out etc.

New chrome work here and there such as drip rails, window surrounds maybe, dash chrome (knobs etc), new rear bumper, re-chrome/replace tail light surrounds etc.

Engine bay tidy up, new wiring, bit of bling here and there, exhaust system, sort the brakes out (staying drums though), replace all hoses etc, rebush the suspension and do the body mounts....

Need to find a front windscreen, sort out the window regulators (rollers missing on some) and plenty of other things that need to be done.

Like with all my projects they have to be as cost neutral as possible, so for me this will take some time.

Generally I buy and sell a car or two and make a profit which then goes into my projects, however of late the profits I have made from my sales have ended up going into the house (which is fine) so I am a bit low on fundage at the moment especially once I pay for the panel and paint.... :D

It's all good though, I'm happy enough to have finally purchased one of my dream cars (and one of which my wife actually likes as well) and to actually have the rebuild process underway... I'm currently loving life!!

Hot off the press, here is the latest update from Clayton.

"Update on the Camaro. We have finished all the panel beating and I primed the complete car late this arvo. I will be blocking the whole car down with the long float tomorrow and then re-priming it then wet rubbing it. I have painted underneath the boot lid and bonnet and the colour looks great. I think you are going to be more than impressed with the finished product. I will send some pics of the primed car tomorrow. Cheers!!"

And here is the first picture of the colour...

Nope, not Hugger Orange (although I am also a fan) and No, no twin white stripes..

More than likely going for a modern version of the hockey stripe and the colour is actually blood orange from the Ford range.

Not going to be to everyone's liking but meh....

My 68 is actually painted silver fox from the xw/xy, with the orange bumble stripe from the territory/BA range. Sounds like sacriledge when you tell people where the colours are from, but i have received so many compliments on the colours before they have heard that.

As long as you're happy with the result, who cares. You're the one paying to have the work done.

Ford do have some nice colours.
Mine is LeMans Red (A Ford colour) but the Bumble bee stripe is the original Ermine White from '68.
Sounds strange when you tell people it's a Ford colour but it only matters what you like (it's your car)

White is the natural fit for the stripe, but I may even go a charcoal or carbon fibre yet?? It's not going to be painted on, it will be vinyl. The quality of vinyl these days is amazing and the variety and things you can do with it is awesome.

Not decided on the stripe whole heartedly as yet so this is where I may be a bit different?

Ok, todays update from Clayton is as follows:

"I have nearly finished blocking the entire car down with the long float.I have picked up a few imperfections and will get them sorted. Tomorrow I will be finishing that and then re-priming it. So far the body has blocked down really well and it should look really nice mate.
I will probably start wet rubbing the body on Tuesday at this stage as I need a few days off.
This is a long winded process and we would usually just use the orbital and then paint it but they never turn out really nice, lucky for you I want to do a good job!!" ;)

What are you doing up at this time of night Gav?

A mate of mine is a graphic artist and has his own business called Current Trendz (window tint and vehicle graphics) so it's something that we have discussed on and off and will be something that we will sketch up before applying. But at the end of the day, being vinyl it can easily be changed.

I asked Clayton if the underside of the bonnet had been cleared after painting to get an idea as to whether the rest of the car would be the same or would have a deeper finish and this is his answer:

"The underside of the bonet and bootlid I painted in direct gloss, 2 coats only. The reason for this is gloss straight of the gun and no need to clear. Its more hardwearing in those areas also.

I have finished block sanding it with the long block and 240 grit paper.

Then after priming it I took a few pics which you will see that it looks smooth in the all grey. This is the last priming effort before I wet rub it with 800 and then apply the base coats and then clear!! Pics coming."

We were extremely happy with what we saw!!

I also took the Camera this time instead of just using the mobile, so I got a couple of better shots of the hanging panels whilst we were there.

I just measured the old one which came in at 41mm thick and the new one is 49mm with the pre-tensioner plate, 45mm without. You do need the plate though due to the design of the mount.

Not quite your 10-15mm lower, it will actually sit higher.

No worries, i'll have to look at other options...

You have any dramas getting the subframe to sit square under the body? I did the same thing, got the car painted before replacing sub frame bushes, a few tense moments while lining things up, making sure we dont throw any panel gaps out etc. All good now though.. dont forget to get a wheel alignment done.

I just did one side at a time. Should be OK but will find out once it goes in for alignment. I still have to pull the front suspension apart anyway and replace all of those bushes (will start doing that today) and it definately needs an alignment, it was scrubbing the fronts badly as it was, too much neg camber. Will look into that.

Please don't tell me it's welded to the floor or the rear rails..

Yep... That is the exact problem I have. They have been welded to the subframe  So either I cut them from the subframe and drop them as you say or cut them from the rear bracket and try and manouvre the bracket out past them. To do this I will more than likely have to drop the diff.

Me, I'd cut them in half and get them off the car.
You won't have to drop the diff. just support it separately from the car (in a way where you can lower it) while you unbolt the front spring brackets.

Maybe when you reinstall them, you can line them up and reweld where you cut them.

Weld-on connectors are a great idea until this situation arises..

Personally, I'd swap to bolt-on connectors. Not as rigid, but not as much a pain in the arse.

I was wondering the same thing... All the sheds i've seen put up in queensland have had the slab layed first with anchor points that tie the shed down on.. Might be because of our cyclone ratings etc up here though. The ones here all use large C section for the roof and side beams etc too... not 'A frame' type roof trusses like this one.

Neil all the posts go into the ground at 600mil deep and back filled with concrete and when the sheds "up" they poor the concrete pad in and around the shed but as for the c section thats what ive got in mine for extra strength but ours is 9m x 7.6 deep with double sliding doors.

Mitch just a tip for the concreters ask em to poor the pad high to low from the back to the front so when you wash out your shed it all runs out the front into a little grate across the front door opening, you should only need a fall over 4% for it to work.

Thumbs up on the shed it looks good so far!!

Yeah, this was entirely my choice. I was going to build a portal design which is the 'C' section as mentioned but opted for this design as I was able to space the trusses 4metres apart to allow for the hoist. I will end up using the other side of the trusses for a mezzanine type storage.

I can now dig the pad in a bit deeper aswell and get it to around 150mm or maybe even 200mm? Not sure yet. The concrete guy is coming round tomorrow to take a look and the fence guy is moving the fence Saturday week.

Hey Jamie, you might be right about that ;) 8 weeks and counting till the screaming begins.:D

Eyes are on you too Lyndsay :p

As a matter of fact there is one already in there!! ;) Still got your bits here too Christian. Will pull my finger out and get around to see you next week hopefully.

Couple of sparkies coming round to quote next week and the pad also goes in on Saturday week.

Time to seriously start looking for a hoist!!

Well Project 'Council Fight' is nearly complete...

Here are the latest pics...

Marty's sparky mate dropped a heap of conduit off and I dug all that in ready for the pad.

Realigned the fence and moved the gates to the right of the shed so I can still access the rear yard.

We got stuck in at 7 and levelled it all out ready for the cement truck. Also ran a drainage channel across the front of the shed and formed that all up.

Very happy with the quality of work. He started at 7am and finished just after 2pm. Treated it like it was his own pad he was laying. For a young bloke he was extremely professional and took his time to make sure it was right. I opted for a smooth finish too so it will be better for sealing and painting.

Looking good.
I don't know if you wheeled any barrows of concrete around, but you realise the concreters earn their money when you do,
Wet concrete in a wheel barrow and rapid changes of direction, not good.

Thought someone would comment on that.. Bit hard to see in the pics, but each time the cement went in the rio was pulled up through the wet cement... and it was a bitch... :D

Wouldn't the Reo settle to the bottom of the wet concrete doing it that way? I think they use little plastic standoffs in the concrete here when they lay a slab.

No bar chairs for the steel? Much easier..
The steel shouldn't settle back down unless the concrete was to be vibrated.
It's best to have the mesh at ~2/3 high. eg 100mm slab, set steel at 65-70mm. That gives the steel a bit more leverage across a span.

Should be alright anyway mate. Perth is all sand which is a great base movement wise. I fly over there a couple of times a year to help a mate with his concreting business and the majority of the basic sort of slabs around houses, driveways ect. dont even have steel in them, in perth any way

Not really. Unless the concrete went in absolute piss, it stays up rather easily. Even wet up a bit concrete is still pretty dense, given the varying sizes of stones etc. If they did actually lift it as the were going back, there's no reason it wouldn't stay up. Shouldn't be a problem.

Using chairs is a great idea and very common for large areas when using a pump, but wheeling over them can be a pain in the arse and plenty of ankles have been rolled trying to do so - especially when the bloke on the 'barra is sportin' thongs!

Whats wrong with the Irish Steel Caps? :D

That mesh wasn't going anywhere when they pulled it up through the cement. If anything the cement was a bit dry to start so it was nice and thick.

As Dazza said, it's not necessary to have the rio in Perth (apparently) but I wanted it just in case..

Bit of an update.. Finally put a vehicle or two in the shed a couple of days ago. It's by no means finished and I still haven't painted or sealed the concrete either, but atleast there is something in it, even if it's not the Camaro.

Still have to get the electrics done and put lights up etc, then chase down a hoist.

Still happy with how things have turned out though. Also finished grassing the yard and decided to grass infront of the shed as we finally found our silt trap which cannot be concreted over. I may pave a driveway later??

The Shannon's guy rang me last week bout upping the value on the Camaro and wants some recent pics.. I might just have to put some wheels on it and push it out of the garage.

But Alas.... I have to get the Beamer sorted before I look at getting the Camaro in there. Got the parts for the 5 series, just got to find the time to start the work.

Plus the other toy, the EJ20T Leone needs a bit more TLC before I sell it and then maybe I could look at starting on the Camaro again?

Shed looks really nice Mitch! I have some spare two pack primer at home ( about 6lts I think) if you want it for the floor, would be enough to give it at least one coat, would then just need the top coat.

What are your plans for the Beemer?

Any day now right ? another addition to the family??

You're right Lyndsay... Due yesterday... on the way to the mid wife appointment now to see what she suggests ;)

I'll take you up on that offer of the primer if you don't mind.

Are you at home at the moment?

The Beemer was to be my daily now that I am working back in Perth. But I picked up a 92 Pajero licensed and in good knick for knicks that does the job nicely so I'll fix her up and see what happens.
