View Full Version : 10 bolt diff. Will it cope?

Has anybody tried to stay with a 10 bolt diff with a motor with reasonable power levels?
I am getting a stroked 350 (383) built at the moment and should be at least 400hp (at the crank). I know this isn't much hp but I have a budget:)
Will the 10 bolt stand up to it or should I just bite the bullet and rebuild now?

Hi Nev,
Your basically seem to be doing the same combo as I am doing (383ci) and I am sticking with my 10 bolt.. as long as you dont plan on abusing the sh*t out of it.. it should serve you well.
I am filling mine with a Richmond gearset, Eaton posi and a TA heavy duty girdle cover new bearings etc.... sticking with the stock 28 spline axles as mine were in nice shape.... we do have upgraded axles for these too and you can go to 30 spline with new axles and posi etc if you wanted!
Cheers

Nev I think I'd be upgrading. It might cost you more in the long run if you rebuild the 10 bolt and end up having to do it again if you lean on it too much. I paid about $4000 for a completely set up 9" with Strange case, locker, Moser 31 splines and HQ brakes. All brand new and will never have to have it in the back of my mind that it might **** itself at the drags with that bit of nitrous. Something to think about.:)

Should hold up o.k. for a while if it's a posi ? If it's open it'll be toast after a few decent peg leg burnouts at the track
I had a HK monaro 3.5 posi centre behind a smog 454 in a camaro that took alot of abuse without breaking

Had a single-wheeler 10-bolt behind my 454 in my 68 Camaro with no dramas over the last 3 years, but not taking any chances with the new ZZ502 engine. Picked up an all new Moser 12-bolt complete with Detroit Tru-Trac and bolt-in axles for bang on $2K US. Spend a little bit more, but hopefully spend it once.

i've got the same dilema Nev, my budget's been cut short so my original 10bolt will have to survive for a while behind a BB.. I will be giving it a freshen up and i've been told (as EAT-30T mentioned) as long as i don't push it too hard it should survive for a while...
In saying that i think I have a long while until mine hits the road to test that theory :p I'll see how you go I suppose ;)

I wouldnt trust it with 400HP. One good launch and it will crap itself. Chev make some good stuff but not diffs  Ford 9" and forget it forever

I need to keep the car relatively stock for rego reasons so I think I'll get the 10 bolt rebuilt with appropriate heavy duty parts rather than risk embarrassment at the first heavy application of the right foot.
It looks like there is a reasonable amount of good gear available.

Got a quote during the week to get my 10 bolt rebuilt to cope with 400+ hp.
The quote was close to $4,000, which I feel is probably over capitalising on a 10 bolt
I have been reading about crate rear ends from Currie Enterprises
( http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/default_crate.aspx )
From what I can understand these 9" rear ends are basically a bolt in unit
Does anybody have any experience with these rear ends?

hay nev l'm no expert but lve had three 9"diff's made by geelong diffs in victoria. A 31 spline billet and housing with life time warranty on the 31's and l'd paid $1700 for that and used my own center and that was in a 11sec lx hatch back and a hg prem with a 400 sbc fast car and now the camaro so i think the 9" is the way to go and part's are any where in aust up to u though

4K is a lot of money just to rebuild your diff. My 9" built from scratch was less than that. As you said on the other thread Nev, the guy thinks your an ATM. I agree with NUTTR and say the 9" is the way to go.
What does it cost to get a 9" built over in the east ?. My diff cost me $3500 and all i supplied was the drum brakes.

Thanks NUTTR,
I think I am going to start looking for a 9".
It's gotta be more economical in the long run.

Thanks for the input TUFF68.
I forgot to add the same bloke quoted me over $5K for a 9'' using my brakes!!
I don't mind paying a bit more for good gear but I don't have that much money to just throw it around.
From yours and NUTTR's feedback I think I should look elsewhere.
Trouble is I have been out of the car scene for so long I don't know too much so I'll have to start hunting around.
