View Full Version : Project 68 Camaro underway

Well, I have finally started the long road that is the project build of my 68 Camaro Coupe. Here is a "before" pic

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/aussiecamaroowner/IMGP1742.jpg

I bought it as a project car 3 years ago and now that my new house and workshop is complete, I have been able to make a start. Here is a photo just before I started the teardown

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g174/aussiecamaroowner/P1010512.jpg

The intention is to build a tough cruiser within a tight budget as, unfortunately, I don't have wads of cash nor the skills to do a great deal of the work myself, but I am up for the challenge. This probably won't be as exciting a thread as some of the other bigger buck, more innovative builds on this site but I hope you get something out of it.

Following is some of the new parts soon to land at the wharf
- New GM ZZ502 crate engine
- New Moser 12-bolt with Detroit True-trac 3.5 gears
- Complete new front and rear suspension
- Subframe connectors
- Brand new front and rear disc brake kit
- New aftermarket gauges
- New upholstery
- New bumpers, chrome, GM cowl hood and lots of little bits and pieces

Hi Albert, good to see you have started your project and made some progress with the teardown (the easy part :D ). I've been following some of your threads on Team Camaro and knew you were close to starting so i've been waiting patiently for you to start this build thread. Good luck with it all and keep the updates and photo's coming.

Good luck with it.

Love the milk crate. They'd have to be some of the most versatile 'tools' around the shed. :D

Nice to see another 68 Camaro.
Good luck with the rebuild.
It looks like you have started with a good solid car in the pictures.
It doesn't look like the body or paint needs any work, is this mainly a mechanical/ drivetrain rebuild?

You blokes have some nice cars over in WA.

There is a little bit of cancer here and there, but overall it's pretty good. Found a small hole in the drivers side floor under the crappy padding they use as carpet underlay. Water must have leaked in somewhere and the padding just soaked up . Rest of the floor and boot is really solid. Car is going into the shop in about 4 weeks for a complete back to metal paint job, so I am working on a deadline. I am going to pull the wiring, dash and underdash A/C gear today.

Dicko, no shed is complete without a milk crate.

Got it direct from the States @ $7800 USD, but paid for it on a day when the USD was 97c AUD. Should have it to the wharf with change from $10k.

I noticed you have your car on those steel dolly wheels. Did you get them from Bowtie Garage on Ebay. Also do you recommend getting some

Just some cheapies from a local parts retailer, nothing special but I have to say they are some of the best tools I bought. When the engine came out, we got some tranny fluid on the floor before we managed to get a bucket under there. When I finished, I just wheeled the car to one side, got out the high pressure washer, cleaned up and wheeled it back again. Could not have been easier!

The dollar being at 97 helps allot if eagle probably work on mid 80S exchange. Well done on the 502 they are a great motor and excellent value plus proven reliablity rather than a small block 500hp motor that someone has built with less reliability.

nice car are u going the same colour and what wheels are u looking at old skool or retro? sad part its comming up summer and the hard part is when u pull up at the light's next to a hottie and u know what u have in the shed at home!

Yeah, agreed on the 502. I had my eye on a couple of different combinations and actually made the decision to buy a T&L Engines 489 (http://www.tandlengines.com/chevy_big_block1.html). Problem was, they were behind in their orders, and as they build to order, would not have made the boat in time. Next best thing was the ZZ502, but after doing some research, appears it is a great choice anyway. Many people are reporting big numbers with just a cam and a tickle of the heads.

454 NUTTR, thanks for the comments mate. I seem to change my mind on the colour everyday. One minute it's going to stay the same, the next it's going to be this colour or that colour. I reckon I won't make the decision until the painter has to go order the paint! One thing's for sure, it is going to be a nice mid-blue metallic, not too different from what I already have, but it needs a little more blue. Always open to suggestions...

Probably go old school with the wheels. I was going to go 18" billets, but I reckon it's one of those things where if it works, it looks awesome, but if it doesn't, it just don't look right. Old school is a bit safer, not to mention cheaper. Those 18" tyres cost a bomb and the money I save may need to go on some bling for the missus to win some points back! Anyway, I have been considering these for the old school look. What do you think? Haven't seen too many of these around.

Actually, here is a question for you all. The following pic shows one of two small cracks I have in the dash pad, which is the factory original. Apart from these, the dash is in mint condition. Is it possible to repair or "glue" these cracks? Dont want to replace with a repro unit, and recovering will be an absolute last resort.

Painter reckons he could finish it before Xmas, but I am not so sure. I must admit, the last Camaro he painted turned out excellent and I was amazed at how quickly he got that one done. My goal at the beginning of the year was to have it completed by the next Big Al's Poker run, but now I would just be happy to have it finished before next summer.

Nope, apparently the shippers in the states couldn't fit it in the container with the crate, so they took it out and shipped it naked. The pallet was used to transport it from the customs agent to his workshop. Despte this, it made it in one piece with nothing but a few scratches and a dent in the dipstick tube.

Hey Albert, any updates for us. How is the panel and paint going ? and how did you go with the missing parts, did they turn up ok ?

Aussiecamaroowner
05-11-2008, 12:40 AM
Well not much to update, unfortunately. Missing parts were located at the shipping company after many phone calls and faxes. Seems they were not labelled as I had instructed. They should hopefully be on the way in another container. Let this be a lesson to all who import stuff, double check your specific shipping instructions are followed, and then triple check again.

I caught up with my painter 2 weeks ago, and he said that he was just finishing off a respray of a Monaro which should take him another 3 weeks and then he will be ready for mine, which should make it the next week or so. Geez, the waiting is killing me.... this is the worst part of this caper. I took the family for a drive last Sunday along my usual cruise route (Scarb. beach, down the coast thru Cottesloe and then to Freo...) and saw heaps of hotties cruising and making the most of the great weather. Driving me insane knowing I am still a long way off doing the same....

Yep, Photobucket and I have the same problem at my work....

Small shop in Bayswater has the car. It was a mission to find someone prepared to do it, as they either quote stupid prices to put you off or rush the job to get you out. It was by fluke I met the guy who has this shop. The shop has almost nothing but muscle cars and cruisers with no less than 7 Camaro's currently either stored there or in different stages of restoration. This is part of the reason I chose this place as he himself owns a few Camaros and muscle cars and he certainly knows his way around a Camaro! Saw the last 68 he painted late last year and if mine turns out half as good I will be stoked.

Small update. Got the call today that a stack of parts that had gone missing from my last US shipment had arrived in Perth, so I went to pick them up, nervous that they might not all be there. Got them all home, unpacked them all and everything is there! I had almost written this stuff off. Considering I bought it all when the dollar was $0.97, I was not looking forward to having to buy it all again. Anyway, here is a quick pic of my pile of goodness...

Guys, just had a call from my painter and it turns out that most of the panels are cactus. He will repair what he can as he prefers to retain as much original metal as possible, but some is unavoidable. I know this is a hail mary, but you don't ask, you don't get. Anyway, here goes....

I will need the following:

- Doors
- Bootlid
- Front-left guard

I am hoping someone may have some servicable used products as I am on a budget and I want to avoid repop stuff unless I really need to go there. Let me know if you can help.

I have Phil @ Final Drive to thank for this. Great guy and really helpful. It seems that the bracket needed to be ground down in the right spots so as to fit without affecting the bolt holes.

Next, some bodywork pics. First is an example of how knackered my doors are...

Marty, not too much to report. Still looking for another left hand door as Frank will only use a new skin or repro door as an absolute last resort. He is doing another parts/car run to the states in 3 weeks and he reckons he will find a solid used door to bring back with him to add to another stack of parts to bring back for me. He wants to restore his 68 Z/28 as soon as he has done mine, so there is a little motorvation now! Winter and the short days have really slowed things down. This time in the shop has been so frustrating and a couple of times I have asked myself if it is really worth it. I have given up trying to set a goal date.

I just took a look back through to the beginning of the thread and noticed the reverse brake booster arrangement when you first got the car and also the alloy heater box set up.

What was the reasoning behind these do you know?

Mitch

Aussiecamaroowner
01-08-2009, 11:19 AM
Not sure, but I guess as the car was an original AC car, they pulled that off and fabricated a heater box for it. I bought a DSE firewall blanking plate which will be welded up to smooth the firewall. The brake booster was off a HR or something like that to add a little more stopping power. 4 wheel drums and a big block were not a good combo.

G'day Marty, going OK, if a little slow thanks for asking. I haven't bothered to update as there hasn't been a lot to report on, but it looks like it's starting to gather a little more momentum. Bodywork is now 95% complete with just a little rust patch around the front left windscreen corner (you can just see it in the photo), a small spot on the drivers floor and the firewall smoothing still to come. Managed to use all factory sheetmetal with the exception of the left rear quarter. Have been told that car should be painted by Christmas. Was hoping to have it ready for the 2011 Big Al's but I have given up setting goal dates. Anyway, here is a recent photo with the car gapped and sealed.

Wow, I can't believe I haven't had any reason to update in so long. Cars have been pulled down, rebuilt and back on the road in the time mine has been in paint prison (now just over 2 years). Anyway, I feel like I might have turned a corner as stuff is being bolted back ONTO the car!

The firewall is now semi smoothed and painted, along with the sub-frame. The idea has been to drop the engine and gearbox into the car, fit the new suspension, refit the front end, turn it back into a roller and the paint the car. Today I removed the crusty old body mounts and fitted new poly mounts. We also slotted the motor and box into the car, or tried to anyway. Here's the rub...

I wasn't 100% sure what engine frame stands I had in the car, so I picked up some new ones some time ago (Classics BB Frame stands 67-69) in anticipation of this day. Anyway, I fitted them no problem, however they are too short and the sump sits on the subframe before I can bolt the engine to the stands. So I bolted the ones back that were in the car before, but the HEI dizzy fouls on the firewall. My question is, does anyone know of the specific part number and source for the appropriate frame stands? I have a few photos below showing the old ones which don't provide any firewall clearance.

Forgive the question but you have got the mounts on the right sides have`nt you? I have fitted the standard big block mounts and mine fitted, but, the standard big cap hei dizzy that comes with the 502 sits really, really close to the firewall, I had to put a spacer under my gearbox mount to make it clear. The standard 502 sump don`t fit the 1st gen camaro`s I`m afraid. I modified mine to fit the crossmember but they hang so bloody low you will hit it at every opportunity. I fitted a milodon low clearance one I think it was(remember to order the pickup as well).

Do you mean the mounts or the frame stands? If you are referring to the stands, we considered that, but as you can see in the photos there is a lip on the stands that won't allow fitting them any other way. I did fit the Milodon sump and pickup to the motor and I get a bee's dick clearance between the crossmember. The new stands I bought from classics allowed plenty of firewall clearance, but were too short, so I can only assume they were designed for the factory BB sump. In the end, to satisfy our curiosity, we re-drilled the bolt holes in the old stands to the same position as the new ones, and dodgy as it may sound, it actually worked.

you must be using small block frame stands as the BB frame stands will move the block forward by nearly a inch and it will bring the block 3/4 inch to passenger side allowing more room on the steering box side. 67 and 68 frame stands are the same 3912597, 3912598 and 69 are different 3950113, 3950114.

Some words of advice on getting headers, go custom as these so called off the shelf big block headers don't fit camaro power steering cars.

Cheers Disco. I bought what I thought were the right frame stands and they did all of what you said ie. taller on drivers side, engine bought forward, etc, but they were not tall enough for the sump to clear the subframe. Also, I appreciate the advice on the headers but I already bought them off the shelf some time ago so I will have to take my chances. Will keep you updated as to the progress.

Sounds like you have the sump sorted but GM Performance Products do sell a GM Gen V/VI 4 quart pan and pickup to suit a 502 in a first gen - Eagles in Melbourne should have them.

Depending on the sump you have might also be worth checking the clearance to steering linkages on full lock.

Cheers guys. Those CA Billet Mounts look awesome, but as this is a budget build, I am trying to keep my costs under control!

Warren, appreciate the advice mate. Feedback has been the Milodon is better suited because of the extra capacity and I am also aware of a couple of other 68's with the same pan fitted to ZZ502's. I couldn't get to the workshop yesterday as I was at the V8's, but work on trying to get the motor to sit in the car continued without me. As it turns out, it looks like our specially modified small block stands may work, with the only problem finding a little more space between the firewall and the distributor (other than the pre-requesite dimple in the headers to clear the steering box). One option may be to place a spacer under the gearbox mount to try and tip the motor forward slightly, but a concern here is the tailshaft angle. The other option is to swap the stock HEI with a smaller distributor, but this obviously involves more expense. Can I get some opinions on what I should do and what distributor to use should I have to change it?

What part number are the classic BB frame mounts you tried and are you sure the mounts you are using suit ? In your post you mention "Classics BB Frame stands 67-69" but they list two - K701 and K702. From the pics they look like Energy Suspension mounts - are they 31115 or 31118 part numbers ? They look like 31118s which suit 69 frame mounts (K701).

I would try and use the correct big block frame stands and engine mounts to suit. From my recent experience it is hard enough getting parts that are meant to be correct to fit let alone bits thats suit a different combo.

Some things to check (and maybe others know the answers):

What gearbox are you running ? The big block cross members are different as well (in addition to TH350 and TH400 differences) and are spaced across to suit the frame mount changes. I know because I bought TH400 small block one and it didn't work. Will a big block on small block stands work with small block cross member ?

If you tilt the motor forward will you have enough radiator clearance (especially if you run thermos and long water pump) ?

I think the small block stands make the motor sit higher - will you have enough hood clearance if you are running a standard hood ?

Aussiecamaroowner

Cheers for the feedback Warren.

Firstly, the mounts are Energy Suspension solid mounts. I am unsure of the part number, however I am told they are the same as fitted to another forum members BBC in a 68. I have 2 sets of BB frame stands, 1 x OER from Classic and 1 x genuine GM (thanks to Christian). Both will not seem to work as the oil pan hits the frame before I can line up and bolt in the right side mount.

I am running a Turbo 400 which was in the car when I bought it. Together with the previous 454, which sat on the current small block stands, it seemed to fit under a standard flat bonnet without issue. I will now be running a cowl hood and the 502 has a short water pump. The gearbox cross member seems to be some custom job as I have never seen it's like before. It will need to be modifed to suit the new position of the engine/gearbox, but this should be pretty straight forward.

I can only surmise that the problem is with the sump (too deep) or the mounts (too short). If the mounts are too short, then hopefully this will compensate for the taller stands.

the spacer i was talking about is about 10mm, shouldn't affect your pinion angle bugger all. As for dizzy you can`t go past a pro billet msd and run a separate coil. You don't even have to run the 6al etc if you want to keep the costs down. As said bonnet clearance may be an issue if you tilt the motor forward but mine clears fine, i havent even removed it now i have the small cap dizzy.

Ahh I just relised something, My gearbox crossmember is a custom unit we made up to fit the pipes through it, therefore the height of my gearbox at the mount may be different anyway so you may not need a spacer. Sorry for the confusion, to much alcohol over the years has made my memory........what was the question again.

Wow, thanks mate, I appreciate the effort to get me the pics. This does help put things in perspective. You are right, there is bugger-all clearance between the pan and the frame.

Well it has been a while since I had anything to update, and whilst it isn't much, hopefully things are picking up some momentum again......

The reason why there has been nothing to update is the shop where my car is, has been undergoing a renovation. Anyway, this is all finished now and today we fitted the new Moser 12-bolt to the car. Here are a couple of pics (sorry, only had the phone handy...)

Out with the old

In with the new (including the 80's style chrome cover!)

I do have a question. As you can see, I went from single leaf 10-bolt to multi leaf 12-bolt. I bought the correct OER shock plates, but there is this pretty severe angle on the shock mounting which doesn't look right to me. Here is a photo of what I am referring to (sorry for the poor quality:() Can anyone tell me if this is a problem?

Had the same issue when I fitted the same OER plates to mine. Found the R/H worst than the L/H. I just gave them a few hit with a sledge hammer to put more bend in it and take the angle out of the shock mount

That reminds me I need to put mine on: i never changed my set-up from single spring to 5 leaf, mind you I lowered the car 3.5 inches. What is the gain for doing this, I under stand the history behind this change in geometry but I dont understand the reason. My mechanic says not to worry about it, how ever I am concerned as its a GM upgrade for multi leaf.

P.s did you use the shock extenders? or did you purchase new shockers?

I have exactly the same mounts on my 502 with blower, the temp we read recently off the headers was 400 deg C, and the pipes have quite a buffer there and I am using a std GM 502 small sump and not a problem.

Does your engine oil get overly hot?
Whats happening to your Tranny oil temp?

Can you put an infra red heat detector on various engine areas and plot the heat, these things are great for finding potential heat melting issues and other things. With mine it found that my oil was hotter than what it was meant to be. So on went a cooler with fan on it, just need to add a remote filter for more oil volume.

Well, after exactly 3 years to the day in the shop , I have colour for the first time. My painter sent me some photos tonight and I thought I would share one as a "teaser". Photo quality ain't great, but I will post more this weekend when I get there and use my (better) camera. I know it's just the inside of the doors, but jeez it's good to finally get to this stage :D

Bet you can't wait to drive it now. Why did it take 3 years in the shop?

Justin, a couple of reasons conspired to make it longer than I had hoped, but the main one is the shop is a one-man show. He is excellent at what he does, but he needs to do smash repairs to pay the bills. Full restorations like mine, are weekends, early mornings and late evenings. I can't really complain too much as the price is right, the work is first class, and I now count the bloke a close mate.

Pure sex right there.......... gonna look awsome.
I have been spending the day tearing mine apart as my 327 had a major wee from 2 orifices..... got 2 core plugs rotted through where you cant get to them without pulling the motor. I think i was a drive away from cookin it completely. Now im finding other issues. Anyone got a nice small block for sale?
