Got the 10 bolt diff out and have taken to Traverna Chassis for the 9 inch diff to be made up and the question of axles come up. 31 spline or bigger
Said to go with 31 spline but is this strong enough for 502 big block? I think the other option is 35 spline. Centre will be 3.7 and nipped up Ford LSD. Anyone know about this Ford axles ? The car is strictly street and has around 560ft/lb of torque with pretty much standard wheels. I would think the tires would smoke before a axle let go

Problem going 35 spline is your choice of carrier units is restricted to basically spools and detroit lockers. none of either are "ideal" for a streeter
31 spline will allow you to choose many more carriers ie: Tru Trac Detroit "soft lock", Auburn posi, eaton posi, ford motorsport etc etc....
Not a bad idea to go with a Large Journal axle though... :) Ie: run a 88128 or U399 bearing... tell Mr taverna that he will know what your talking about :)

My 9 inch has 31 spline axles with a Detroit Tru Trac.

Go 31 spline. No way are you going to break one on the street with street tyres. We talking Moser or equivalent? Im guessing it would take a bit more power out to drive 35 splines too?
would 35 splines and a detroit locker not be an unbreakable combo?

Im using 31 spline Mosers and a 4wd Systems LOKKA LOCK RIGHT. Its like a Deotroit locker but more refined and quiet. Told it will take 600hp. http://www.4wdsystems.com.au

Not sure about that more refined bit ..... The Detroit series 3 soft locks would be as good as a locker gets... although they do not do a 35 spline soft lock.

31 is plenty but why a 9"?
A 12 bolt would be my choice. Probably a Moser, and plenty strong for a 502.
I have a 9" with 31 spl Moser axles, Ford Motorsport Nodular carrier, Daytona pinion support, Detroit locker.. About $4K worth of rear end..
All that fuss and expense when a decent GM 12 bolt can do the job and not have to make any modifications.. Just bolt it in.
..and it's the GM part.

Simple I couldnt find one in Aus. The 9 inch was more economical than a Moser import. Also years ago running a Superstock HQ with a 12 bolt Chevelle rearend we had nothing but trouble with breakages. Even with Summers Bros axles and spool etc the thing could not handle a high RPM launch with slicks for very long. Our Ford competition just did not seem to have the same grief. I know the application is now different but the memory is there

I agree with most of this thread 31 spline with a true trac (or equivalent) will be more than ample.
I've gone 35 spline and det locker and full floaters...knowing it will be an interesting ride on the street...
As you say with that sort of torque you will smoke em long long before you break one.

Fair enough.. Ford 9" are stronger when comparing stock with stock, but today is a different story like you say.
A Moser 12bolt from Moser, with 30spline axles is US$2574. (12-6769CA-2-411)
Local shipping, and via Pete's container plus taxes would be easily a grand less than what my 9" owes me. My 9" will never break, but it's a damn Ford part in a classic Camaro!
People here are asking stupid-money for 12bolts, but they're still obtainable easily for a reasonable prices if you know where and how. ;)

That's what I mean.. If you order through Moser and get Pete to bring it in, then that will save you a lot of cash in freight, and paying "classic prices" on parts down here.
Maybe Moser's product through Jegs or Summit may be even cheaper as Moser won't want to undercut their stockists, and let Jegs & Summit will compete against each other for your business.

i sold a 10 bolt for $400 about 9 years ago. complete diff drum brakes open center and a very tall ratio. At some stage during the life of my '57 someone had put a 10 bolt out of a Camaro in it. I have another one laying around that was in my Camaro that i might hold on to. Also has drum brakes open center and a very tall ratio
