I'm no expert, but I've helped source and restore a couple.
1970 and 71 are almost double the price of 72-74 (all things being equal)
"cuda" is the performance version and "barracuda" is the run of the mill version.
Engine numbers are stamped into a boss next to the sump and really hard to find, but they also have a partial vin on the radiator support and under the boot seal.
The data tag on the left inner guard should tell you original color, trim and options and the last line should match the VIN tag on the dash.
The VIN itself will tell you what engine the car came with originally.
Rust is an issue in the lower half (floors, boot floor, quarters, guards, doors etc. etc.) with all mopars.
Buy the best most original complete car you can afford, some parts are real expensive, if not impossible to find at all.
Good luck with your search :D

thanks for the update anychevy & eat-30t i appreciate your help.
so what i can gather is the 70/71 cuda's have an open cheque book, i gather thats for the hemi cuda, the baracuda is you run of the mill commodore/falcon, so in saying that do you think lets just say a 1974 baracuda is a worth investing in? and parts i see are another issue in finding them,

Nice Hemi Cuda clones bring US$100 grand + so forget the real thing unless you're last name in Murdoch or Packer
"Cuda" is kind of the Plymouth version of "RT"
If you can find a complete, original 72-74 barracuda with a decent body ?
I'd say yeah, go for it :D
Repro parts for mopar are expensive and some things you just cannot buy, so keep that in mind.

What's your budget ?
This, well optioned, nice, solid 74 would be around 40 grand landed if he gets the BIN price ?
It's probably more like a 25 grand car, but they have "barrett Jackson syndrome" this time of year.
