I am going to shift the battery to the boot. I will direct wire the positive to the starter motor but can the negative be earthed in the boot
or does the earth need to be returned to the motor ??

It can be earthed to the boot, but make sure it's to something like a frame bolt so it has a strong link to the car.. frame and shell. That's for a commodore at least..
But with the Camaro having a separate front sub frame though .. I'm guessing it will be fine... as long as your motor is getting a good earth from the shell..
Personally I would earth the battery in the boot to a frame bolt (through the floor to the frame), then have a separate earth from the shell/rear frame to the front sub frame making sure it has a good earth, and then your motor can earth off the front sub frame.. problem solved

I would run the biggest fattest cable you can get from the negative battery post, the shortest way direct to a sub frame bolt
Voltage drop and bad grounds are common with batteries in boots
Same with the positive to the starter, use the heaviest gage you can get.
Then ground the front crossmember to the block.
A couple of ground straps to the firewall and guard and one in the boot to one of the hinges as well wouldn't hurt.

I'm currently doing the same thing in my 68.. using an odyssey battery so i dont have to run a battery box and vent it outside....
What side of the car are you running the battery on? I'm planning to use the pass side to offset against drivers weight a little bit.
