We purchased this car from an importer in QLD late 2005 prior to the vehicle landing here in Australia, and I quickly learnt that this was not adviseable once I got the car home especially when you pay top $. What was meant to be a register and then use for special events, turned into a 2 year drive as I went rebuilder.
The result speaks for its self though thanks to the Peter from Stylerod Panels in Kilsyth Victoria for the Panel work and Peter Kass from Sprint Automotive in metropolatin ave nunawading vic for the dyno and mechanical work. Yes I did do a lot of the work myself!!:)
There is another member on this site whose car was at Stylerod when I was having all my work done.
This car is on the road a lot mixing up with Weddings, debutants, and touring and the odd show of course.
Some details of the car:
Genuine 1st Month 1967 RS Camaro.
*Bolero Red
327 engine now a 406 SBC, dart heads, 10.5:1 comp, comp cams, 750 HP Holley,
H beam LS1 rods, Edelbrock super victor, HP Water pump still tuning for HP,
header super comp headers to go on and 3" system over the comming weeks, not sure on muffler type yet. etc etc
*Dominator Eliminator 3000 Stally.
*Bare metal respray August 2007.
*Shortened 9" roundback, 31 spline mosers, detroit locker.
*TH400 built to spec.
*4 wheel disk brake from CPP in the states.
*Coys 20" rear and 18" front.
*Grant wood wheel.
*All chrome
*Roadrunner glass kit
*grill is new new.
*Rear lights and panels were in good cond so I just replaced the plastics and removed all the spatter paint from behind them.
*2 x pallet loads of suspension parts from the states was ordered for front end and rear end.
*3" drop in the back with 5 leaf rear springs replacing single leaf, tie rod style traction bars to be fitted soon for better hook up.
*1.5" drop at the front, I didnt use drop spindles as I wanted a more pro street look with the back just squatting a wee bit.
*Interior is new.
*Stripped the fuel tank and repainted in black Acrylic.
*All the front end components have been painted black after sandblasting.
*Aussie desert cooler alloy Pro/Street radiator to try and keep the dam siamese bore motor cool.
*Restored the interior back to original as possible with the exception of the B&M Megashifter (came with the car didnt want to replace it), except for some added
guages. The interior is meant to be red and it still may be returned to this one day but at the moment it stays black. All the dash is Bolero Red.
*Console was sourced restored and refitted.
*Genuine AC Delco AM Radio was found in the states purchased and then restored rebuilt and returned to its rightfull place.
*Rolled the inner rear quarters not cut them 12mm in, this allow me to run the large rims without scrubbing, and if at a later stage I want to return the car to
standard condition its able to be done.
*Personally rewired most of the front engine bay, needs updating though, and rewired boot loom and a large proportion of under the dash. No
more Fires yahoo!!!!
*Installed deluxe vanity lights in the rear sale cloth panels.
*Replaced Interior light.
The car only has a single mirror as I have the remote adjustable units on order from the states to fit (aka late 67 so period correct) and the matching non adjustable square type for the right hand side.
22/10/07 The car has been delivered to Melbourne Performance Centre to finalise the cooling system; 2 litre header tank being made up and plumbed, and some final tuning on the dyno, so far the car has 260 RWKW and 790 Nm of torque & still climbing.
This is what it looked like leaving California, note the purple tint on the windows and the large baloon torque thruster wheels. The paint on arrival was full of humidity bubbles and marks from parts falling on the car. It was also leaning to the right hand side nearly 3 inches.

Note the use of the Auto Meter tube tacho, does everything the big 5" units do but are small and discreet.
The console is not mounted yet in this photo, integrated the shifter in by making up a 20mm perspex frame and painting black to hide the
gap in the console around the shifter, looks factory.

Thank you that means a lot comming from someone that has accomplished what you have with your rebuild.
This car is amazing it certainly stops crowds, I broke down a day after the paint and the car was put back to gether outside the city square in the city, well the car was swamped by onlookers. I had hand bags brushing against the car, jackets, I was screaming the tow guy was screaming we figure around 200 hundred people crowded around and guess what! they were all mauries. They were having a special event in the city, great people but like any non car people they dont understand what is meant by dont touch. And the police did not care in the slightest even when St Kilda Road was half blocked off by people all around the car.
I have not painted the underneath of the body as it only has surface rust nothing to critical, I will get to that one day.
You can download a video of my 67 RS arriving at this beastclub and Ford XR6turbo day on the 20.10.07 at Barry Road Bayswater.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/th_clips.jpg (http://s180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/?action=view¤t=clips.flv)
When I arrived at this event the whole place went quite apparently I felt a bit embarrassed as everyone was starring at the 67 as it pulled up, you will see it in the video. Enthusiasts spilled out of the dyno room whist a car was on the dyno just to see it.
I love it a lot and so does my wife, after the paint she started referring to the 67 as "SHE"! is that good or what?

Yeah I hear you.. some people don't get the whole "Look but don't touch" concept..Its aggitating at the best of times..... I witnesses alot of that at the Sydney motor show last weekend.. :o
I'm really fond of the 67 RS its very elegant looking especially with the style trim chrome pieces.:)
Unfortunately my 69 (The one I have here) Will be getting sold upon completion... responsibilities call :( I need to buy some sydney real estate:cool: Apart from my Pro Street 69.. (which I'll be building whenever I feel like I'm in no rush) I would love to have something like your 67 for me my wife and son to enjoy and go cruising in.... cant do that in a tubbed car with a 14 point cage LOL :p You've definately given me inspiration....
Wait till SirGeo (forum owner) see's this..... he might just get off his ass and do something LOL :p

Paul,
That is an awesome 67.....so glad my car is down at Pete's as well (it was hanging from the roof yours was in there.
Your car looks great, great stance and a lot of really nice touches. I'm not surprised it gets so much attention.
In 12 months once mine is on the road, we'll have to take em on the road together.
Mine's down at Sean Mullins Racecars at the moment getting mini-tubbed, custom 4 link and 9" rear end installed...then it's back to Stylerod for the new Art Morrison front end (arrives in 1 week), BBC install and T400 mock up...then we pull it all apart again...

Look forward to it Chris.
You are doing everything I wanted to do with mine, but due to its Hire Car registration I have to keep it to 550 hp or there abouts and dont think tubs would pass. Mind you its probably the fastest legally registered hire car in Australia from this era. This business would not work if the cars were not genuinely high performance as our market is people that want this and know what a wild motor is meant to sound like.
We have 4 of these cars; a convertable 67 looks the same except has ralley wheels and full on 454, a cream 68 coupe with 502 does high 10's, and a blue z28 copy with a 383.
I built this car for the customers whilst it is a bit wild its just streetable.
When I give the hire car idea away I would love to tub the rear end, and put a 572 merlin in it, speaking of which I was so tempted last week as I was in eagle and they offered me a 8 grand disc on a 572 making it only a couple thousand more than what I have already spent on the 406.
But I love the attention the camaro gets especially dressed in a red dress.

Paul,
Just a quick question for you, I thought with hire cars that they had to be RHD? or is this not the case?? I'm sure Muggz on here does the same thing but had to convert to RHD... maybe its a state law??
My wife keeps telling me I should do some camaro's up for hire... I'd love to have a pair of 69 pace car replica's :)

It was never raised as an issue during the compliancing process. I informed the Taxi Directorate that it was a genuine US Car and it was accepted on this basis, it went over the pits and was issued with a RWC. We do need to provide an RWC every 2 years.
Each driver has also needed to have police checks done and be registered as a Chauffeur, it was also recommended that you join an industry related hire organisation this presents a professional picture to the customer.
Camaro's are great for two / three people hire but not practical after that, however we still get bookings for 3&4 per car. I have had my coupe registered as a 4 passenger all our other cars are registered as 3.

Paul,
Just drooling again over those pics, man that car looks great.
My 632 was dynoed at 816Hp (flywheel)...can't wait to get it on the road.
There is a guy in Wonga Park building a 1200Hp tube chassis 69 camaro....very early days.
I want mine streetable also....but mean at the same time. Those 572 motors are tough.
By teh way I think you have just made every one on this board envious......4 ...count em...4 Camaro's...

Yes you read correct but I must share something with you; I am a detailer by trade and what you see is a lot of masking and coverup by products used example: prior to washing I used alchohol to clean the paint, then washing in Meguiars gold class (to lay a sleet wax), then for the paint I needed to get a high gloss so I used meguiars wet look wax by hand, I also used a lot silicon on the tyres to highlight the red. When shooting the car I shot it in open sun and then under exposed the shot x 2 F-stops with a polarising filter in place.

If the right offer came along I would do a deal on my sbc for a strong 454,502 etc.
But it would need to be with a set of 67 extractors, I would trade my new pair of Hooker Comps.

Keep the pics coming.
OK Helli here they come.
The car just came back from an excursion to Melbourne Performance in Bayswater, for those that dont know them they specialise in all things racing; Targa, v8 supercars, porshe cup, improved sedan etc etc. Most people have seen their HQ Monaro Hugger orange and silver stripes down the side, took out 3 outright at the Targa last year.
Due to the 406 being siamese I have had a lot of problems cooling it and thats why I sent it to Melbourne performance as they said they will fix. 4 days later and a test drive and a done deal.
Work done:
Alluminium front radiator support panel cover.
New 16" fan, race type S fans with over 3000 CFM pulling, ulike the old fan it quoted 3000 but did not deliver.
Install a custom header tank and modify Desert Cool radiator.
Braided hookup lines.http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/01-11-07_0955.jpg

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/01-11-07_0958.jpg
Work still to come:
Another power steering pump with remote filler smaller in size the one I have just installed as it looks to bulky.
Braid the remote oil cooler lines to the filter and cooler.
Make up another alloy tank to take the power steering fluid
Hooker Comp 1 7/8 Headers are ready for HPC and a 3" full system to diff and then 2.5" over tailshaft.
Final dyno work.
Replace Heater Fan, wont be removing inner guard I will cut an access hole in the wheel area and then make an inspection plate up and bolt back with a rubber seal and self tappers. Here are some more eye CANDY from a Beastclub car dyno day at Bayswater over the past couple of weeks.

Great test for the new cooling system, 1.5 hours travelling time from Rowville through the city stop start, to Sunbury, it did not go over 180 degrees all trip. This is the first time I have ever travelled this sort of distance and been under 210 degrees.
Murphy's law prior to this wedding the wiper motor went so I had to order another one, it arrived on the Friday morning and this left me 3 hours to install the new motor, put on the overiders, detail the car and head off. I started at 6.30 in the morning and finished for 1.15 pm just in time to have a cuppa and leave.

TTOs (AR Torque Thrust Original) wheels.
Re the Torque Thrust Wheels; Sold them prior to arrival and purchased the Coys Billets. The TTO's were the typical balloon tyres and rims and the wrong offsetts. Typically the front guards had damage from scrubbing as to did the rear.
Thanks for your comments.

Just thought I would post some updates to my 67 Camaro:
The main update it to the fuel system; upgraded from the Holley 750 HP to a Road Demon 850 DP, also increased fuel lines to 1/2 inch, with carb update producing around 25 Killer Wasps at the wheels on the dyno, with still more tuning to come.
Further updates after a starter motor burnt out and the flex plate stripped, I took the car off the road to install a full 3 inch cross over exhaust system. I purcashed some Hooker Competition Headers 1 7/8 primaries to 3.5" collectors, good for some more KILLER WASPS! I had the Hookers PC coated inside and out and then polished to their show shine. We are using lukey straight through 3" with no resonators I hope due to the size they will reduce the noise a bit as the flow masters were really loud and tended to bark a lot.
Other updates include researching:
1. rear tall bumperettes
2. bonnet matt
3. flamming river adjustable S/Steel steering column
4. custom billet air cleaner system made up to seal the cowl hood when the hood is closed therefore making it legal.
5. on the wish list some adjustable traction bars.
ENJOY.

Nice... If anything your engine bay looks too clean :p
Have you put the exhaust on yet? I would've thought 3" straight through would be too much.. Interested to know how the sound differs aswell...

Hi Steve.
The headers are on and the custom cross over system has been made, we built the 406 for 1 7/8 headers to 3.5 inch flange plates, originally I was researching adaptor plates to install 2" primaries however we went staggered; 1 7/8 to 2". The heads are Dart Eagle Platenums are are running 230 cc on the intake and exhaust, the cam is a comp cams Street/Strip grind 294s-10 with 250 intake duration 525 lift. We had a small set of extractors and 2" system and it was strangling the motor, we did tests with and without exhaust and picked up gains. I recently had melbourne performance go over the engine and they suggested like many others the setup that I am now installing. Prior to the exhaust and just with the install of the 850 dp demon and upgraded fuel lines to 1/2" we found another 10 KW on the dyno two weeks ago, we are looking for a further 20 on exhaust.

Steve.
Steve its finally in and the difference is a lot. Firstly I will detail my drive train:
406 sbc and all the hp stuff to low 500hp.
th400
hooker comp 1 7/8 - 2 " to 3.5 in flange headers hpc coated inside and out.The exhaust has been made into a cross over system.
Firstly the sound is totally different to the 1 3/4 strangle system, very deep and no crackling anymore. The noise at idle and normal driving in the cabin and out side has lowered substantionally, to the point that I can now have a conversation inside the car if over 60 kph (is oscillates at around 1800. On the top end under excelleration its just as noisy as the previous system however thats over the 3000 of course. Horsepower wise! the car has picked up near 20 rear wheel killowatts.
Tune wise the car breaths a lot better and there is less un burnt fuel getting through the system.
Down side, with the new HP gains I need to upgrade my fuel system AGAIN :D
The exhaust fitted up well but there is lot more cabin heat I will need to resolve this with some sort of sheilding under the car. The floor already has rubber matting stuck to it for some insulation but this mainly serves for sound.
I have the tail pipes dump at the rear and there is enough room with a bit of bending for this with out modification, mine is hitting something will need to check under full recoil.
The HPC coated pipes look amazing, and even better still you can see them from the side of the car through the wheels.
A bit of advice; the pipes due to side sit really low, even though my car is on 1.5 " down on stock height. We welded skid plates on the bottom of headers and then sent them off for coating.
In summary this exhaust suits my application as it has big heads and has lots of cubes. Most of my friends have done the same on their 454-502's with similar positive results.
These are the only pics I have at the moment but you can see how I have made the exhaust leave the car at the rear, and some of the side on shots you can see the Headers.
Further changes:
I removed the 2" redwalls and put twins on; white and red with the white being 1.7 mm and the red a 3 mm band
added the rear bumper overiders to match the front.
braided heater lines
replaced the nice rocker covers with old skool finned type as the centre bolt ones would not seal properly and in the process of trying to seal them I cracked them, I will see If I can get warranty.
Looks like the MSD 6al has given up when its gets hot so I will need to purchase another one this week.
Replaced the B&M Mega Shifter long shaft with a small one and put on a billet ball, looks much better more descreit.http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/DSC_0322.jpg

Thank you Sir Geo for your positive comments, it keeps getting better I would love to catch up at some point as you dont live far from me Knox.
You should be proud of your project as you are going to stop a lot traffic in your car.
A word of advice due to the rubber neck syndrome on the road keep a lot of distance from the car in front of you and be prepared for lots of people cutting your off and driving one inch off your bumper.
People forget to watch the road when they are watching eye candy like our cars;) , I have seen at least 3 accidents around my car due to this, its worrying.
I had a guy on my bumper the other day with his mate and I could not shake him, i.e. sat on the speed limit perfectly, dropped wel below he still persisted, so I put my foot down and filled the front of his car up with tyre smoke at 80 kph, I **** my self:eek: because the car got to a lot more than that and then lost grip again at 6400 rpm, wont be doing that again in a hurry.

Has anyone got any advice on what ignition system to go with: MSD 6al (again) Crane H6 R with LX2 coil, MSD digital? The heat on Saturday was 40 deg on the road and probably near 90 under the bonnet. The MSD 6al could not cope and I limped home from the city to Knox with lots of missing and several stalls. The cooling system coped very well under 185 most of the day.
The Crane looks good from a digital perspective and low current drain and also it works from 6-16 volts where the MSD 6al is 10-18v, with .750 ma of drain p/100 rpm.
Has anyone put one of these boxes in a neat alloy box ad incorporated a cooling fan into it?
It has to go in the engine bay, and has to be put above the heater box.
Went to the Hot Rod Show today did anyone else go, one of the TV shows did took a video of my whilst in the rodders park.

One further thing, this car was orginally a standard red interior to go with the bolero red outside (which is what I had it repainted in), what do you all think about putting the interior back to all red including the console? maybe a deluxe red with a black stripe around it, or a 68 houndstooth in red or black?
Oh BTW I had to put all complianced seat belts front and rea through the car when I had it prepped for reg 2 years ago.

Now on those belts, was that lap / sash for the front or 3 point ?

for the front I had to go recoil three point with stand offs, for the rear it did not matter I have the old slide and adjust 3 point.

It was a bit of a hack job by someone that really didnt care, still have to fix it.
They mounted for the front belts in rear next to the seat the recoil unit, then ran the belt up the side of the trim to a mount hole punched into the top of the steel, this then goes to the front seat from there. I want to put it all inside the door but have not found someone to do this yet, I will then install 68 trims that go over the top of the panel with fuzzies.
Over the course of the week I will post some photos for you all.

So i am thinking of 2 ways to do mine.
1. BMW 3 series convertible seats (they have an integrated 3 point belt built into the seat). My only issue on that is I really want the seat back to be lower than the window line of the car.....with these seats it will be higher....
2. So my second option is sort of similar to what you describe, run the belt up the inside of the rear "door panel" have an exit hole on the window sill and then a normal 3 point. My only issue with this is I'm told the angle of the belt must be between 30% positive and -5% negative angle from the point of the shoulder
So still some work to do.

Great Idea the BMW seats, have you ever concidered converting the rear seats to twin buckets? I researched this and was going to use VX R8 Style front seats for the back, then trim in between with a leather console. When the car is retired from Weddings this is probably one of the first things I do if its still innovative. I would hten

If I retire the car from wedding life then this could one of the things I do! these are dreams but it will probably be the red houndstooth.
BTW I just purchased some more toys:::::
a genuine KPH GM 1968 speedo, I spend 6 hours pulling it down yesterday and restoring it came up good, the flash bounce back over exposes the pics.
Purhcased astro balls to put either side of the dash to provide some cooling. If anyone out there is in melbourne has astroballs I would appreciate if someone could make a template for me of the hole and the vent lever that operates them. dont want to hack up my dash and its noticeable, i want them to look factory.

Any updates on this sexy machine.....
The car has been frustrating me a lot over the past two weeks, you may notice in the engine bay I use a MSD 6al and Master Blaster II coil, well the coil crapped it self on a 40 deg day. The reason for this we found out was I had it lying on its side and apparently MSD does not fill them right up with transformer oil so when on their side and they get hot they cook themselves. MSD just recently put a notice about this on their website.
Well any way I purchased a Digital 6 MSD from the states and the blue coil, I began by putting all the wiring into the glove box and created a floor for the box to sit on and also a mounting plate for the coil against the side of the kicker panel.
wired it up and suprise suprise it did not work, tried everything and its dead, so I ordered one locally another $650 later, spent 2 hours putting this in and it would not work! Ok so I got my mechanic over everything checked out, I routed the earth to the battery, and then cut the magnetic pickup wire and the car fired, much to my final enjoyment.
I will be putting fan in the glove box, but these Digital Boxes are noisy. The first thing I have noticed is that I am not getting the miss firing anymore when the car gets warm.

Need some advice please!
I want to upgrade my standard black interior with possible the deluxe type.
The car is originally a red on red RS, meaning it had a standard red interior. I dont know if to go back to all red or stay with the black, everyone I speak to in the resto side say stick with the black.
How involved is it to convert a standard coupe to deluxe interior? can anyone help?
I actually like the Red Seats with the Black stripe.
I have to move forward on this as the front seat springs need redoing and I am not going to pull them appart and put 2 year old covers back on again.

Another question!
Can anyone offer to shed some light on the 68 houndstooth seats will they fit the standard interior rear seats? I know they will fit the front with the right bung, I am almost decided on putting the red seats in with the black carpet and leaving the headlining black and putting the red door trims on.
What do you think

Hello Its been a while.
The car has just had its final chassis dyno work for now and more alloy fabrication work.
I have decided to incorporate an oil overflow tank with a remote mount power steering reservoir.
As yet I have not installed the new power steering pump, the unit is very small and sits off the right side head, this will allow me to put the alternator below and down near the subframe.
The demon has had problems since new with the front accelorator pump it keeps faulting, we have found the problem to be a swolen gasket and was responsible for zapping 34 RWKW.
I am told that the car will be in Junes Street Machine Magazines :D on the front page in the readers section, means 3 or 4 photos.

Hi. I purchased the hoses from Pete Smith at Eastcost Mustang In lilydale Melbourne.
They are both standard type, and yes they are a tight fit, the bottom one is as normal.
The last manifold the edelbrock torquer sat lower and was harder to fit, this current manifold the super victor + air gap i higher by around 30mm therefore making it easier to fit.

Thank you! just trying to do something different with the looks department and engine bay design.
Ideally I want a 572 blown and tubbed that is my dream camaro, however this is the card I have been dealt so I am maximising it.
The final tune will be 200-300 shot of NOS just preparing for that now which should mean somewhere I guess around 400 RWKW, not that I will be using it good bragging rights.
p.s forgot to mention that now the car is close to final tune I now have vacuum problems so I am investing in a vacuum tank, I will mount this near or infront of the heater box to hide that area.

Hi Dan.
They are Coy's 20" with back spacing of 5.5" front are 18" with back spacing of 4.5".
The rear end is a Round Back 9" widened 10mm each side on standard width to keep the wheels off the inner wall, its pretty tight under the rear panels but they dont scrape.

Some more updates:
Since I last posted I have had the following done:
Many hours of dyno time finally dialled the motor in.
Installed a custom alloy cowl induction system.
Changed the wheels from the 20" Billets to 15" Centerline warriers.
Some minor Oil leak repairs.
I had a problem with petrol fumes comming in through the vents and causing drowsyness and eye buring, made the ride un comfortable from a drivers perspective, after doing a bit of research decided to look at ceiling the carby to the bonnet and creating the induction bowl. What we used was a billet low rise 14 aircleaner and then put a fitting on the bottom of it with an "O" ring base, these are commonly used on sprint cars to keep the dust out of the motors, we then created the top out of flat alloy to the shape of the under bonnet and then fitted with split beading. Works extremely well and for the first time no fumes in the car, and a side benfit the car stay in tune even when the under bonnet temps are high. I guess there is no more hot air being sucked in.
Wheels: The 20's & 18's looked good in my opinion but the ride was woefull, I started suffering severe neck pain and back pain after each cruise on and off for the last 12 months, so I decided when the tyres were up (3 months of use) that I would look out for some old school items. Initially I was looking for Autodrags (centrelines) or Weld - Convo Pros, could not find the right offsett second hand and the warriers came up. After two days of polishing using the meguiars metal polish system they look as good as new. Put some 352 Yokies on the rear in 265/60 and we are in business. Well I finally have a car that is great to drive.
The motor is all finished now and we are now just working out what NOS upgrade to install; 150 or 200, this would make the car around 750 HP at the flywheel.
Enjoy the pics!! Oh would like some comments on the new wheels what do you think????

Killer looks on the street today, and a better ride now not much of the back or neck pain due to the big rims. This car sounds awsome and now looks very aggressive.

Peddars have 3 sets of springs off the shelf the smallest springs they have lift the car 5 mm, the second ones 10mm and the third 15mm (big block ones), they then have customs that they wrekon will lift 1".
Peddars part number is 2084 Sports ryder coild spring, and they recommend GSR9033 Gas Sports Ryders.
Nothing they had was the same as the current setup, only 5mm higher, Ferntreegully Pedders had all of these on the shelf.
Ok my current suspension setup:
FRONT:
Purchased the springs from the states they are 1.5" lower than standard height, and are small block springs. KYB Gas Shockers.
Tyres 185/65/15 Yokies
REAR:
I replaced the single rear leaf springs with 5 leafs with inbuilt tramp system from a 9 second 67 Pontiac Drag car, the back sits 1" from the bump stops, from memory 2.5" lower than stock.
Cheap Eagle Shockers.
Tyres 245/60/15 352 Yokies, great grip didnt expect it.
The problem is not stance as it looks awsome, its the Hooker Competition Headers, 2" tuned length primaries to 3.5" collectors under the car, they sit *ucken low. But they give me on the dyno around 20 RWKW and sound awsome.
Maybe I will lift it 15- 25 mm and keep a set of standard springs incase a RWC is required.

Your comp is way to high, you need to be around 8 - 8.5, I am going through this at the moment trying to get a Procharged engine built.

I tend to agree... 11:1 is alot for an FI application...
We do run 10:1 comp with our procharged LS1 however boost pressure is limited to 8 psi and it is EFI so the tuning is more precise and accurate.. however its still not at its full potential.. !

HELLO ALL.
THOUGHT I WOULD POST PICTURES OF SOME MORE WORK DONE.
CONSOLE CLOCK
GAUGES ON SCUTTLE PANELI PURCHASED A CONSOLE CLOCK AS THIS CAR HAD ONE ORIGINALLY, THE CLOCK NEEDED A FULL RESTO AS THE INSIDES WERE BURNT OUT. I TRIED REWINDING THE COILS WITH LITTLE SUCCESS BUT IT WAS NOT RELIABLE. FINALLY FOUND A COMPANY IN THE STATES THE SPECIALISES IN REPAIRING AUTOMOTIVE CLOCKS SO I SENT IT THERE, THREE WEEKS LATER A NEW INSIDE MECHANISM FULLY PAINTED AND RESTORED ON THE OUTSIDE, I THEN INSTALLED IT AND LOOKS GREAT.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/DSC_2426.jpg
SINCE I HAD TO REMOVE MY AUTOMETER GAUGES FROM THE CONSOLE I HAVE MADE THE DECISION TO RETURN THE INTERIOR AS CLOSE AS I CAN BACK TO STANDARD WITH MINOR PERIOD IMPROVEMENTS. THE DECISION WAS MADE TO PUT THE GUAGES ON THE SCUTTLE PANEL IN MATT BLACK PODS, I THEN BACK LIT THEM WITH RED BULBS TO MATCH THE PAINT.
THE CAR LOOKS REALLY TOUGH NOW WITH THE NEW WHEELS AND THE WHOLE PRO STREET THEME WITHOUT THE TYRES HAVING THAT MEXICAN PROSTREET LOOK OF BULGING RUBBER OUT PAST THE GUARDS 2 INCHES.

Hi,
Is that an original radio or aftemarket?
Rgds,
Nev
Yes its a genuine 67 AM delco radio, which is my car was delivered with but missing like everything else when I purchased it; my camaro went through many stages over the years in the states from what I can see; yenko copy with lakes pipes, 4 speed and drag racing, back to auto so the condtion of everything was poor and all dash items were pretty much missing. I considered a Stereo unit however due to the noise inside the car I cant hear anything anyway so this radio is only to put the car factory correct. It was a good project and fullfilling, here is the process I went through to restore the radio to a fully working unit.
Looked for 12 months on ebay and restoration places but refused to pay the $500-800 for an AM radio that most wanted for a restored AM Delco item, so I found one that was covered in black paint, scratched terribly, generally in very very poor condition I actually got a real shock when I opened the box but I paid $20 US and $25 US for delivery, so it owed me $70. The main thing for a radio restoration is to have everything there, I asked he owner (original owner) if it had ever been opened, he said it looked as if it hadnt, this is an exclelent start.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/DSC_2446.jpg
Here are my steps for restoration:
Pulled all the cases off
Dismantled the front facia and plastic front.
Opened up the front Sliding mechanism and pulled it appart carefully.
Scrubbed the casing carefull not to remove the original factory sticker, so this meant leaving some surface rust, This is good though.
used Meguiars plastic polish to bring the display back to a clear and transparent state,
painted the backing plates
Repainted the the selector line in bright red paint
sourced new knobs and dials (steel ones as original not plastic).
scrubbed the circuit board with metholated spirits and an old toothbrush, this gets rid of old flux and gives you an idea of where dry joints could be, I then ran the soldering iron over all joints removed old solder and then put fresh solder down, took about 2 hours on and off.
The push button controls took a while to get right but really straight forward. Supprisingly the cleaning of the push buttons took a lot of time:
used windex for the initial disolving of human skin gunk, (carefull because the amonia will cause disscolouration of the plastic if left on.
Used pins to carefully scrape the gunk out
put the buttons and other parts into a container and soaked them in degreaser overnight.
Then used meguiars plastic polish to do the final cleaning.
fired it up smoke billowed from it as the capacitors heated up for abou 30 mins, left it standing turned on for 3 days it is was fine.
radio still had lots of oil inside from lots of spraying of the mechanism
there were some leaky capacitors that i replaced
Made up a new wiring loomPuchased a new factory correct radio facing backing plate from pontiworld and the project was finished.
All up it probably cost me $80-$100 and a bit of time.
Its not practical to use because of the MSD Digital 6 and the RFI ( interferrance ) throughout the wiring

Man I love your car......that red just gleams....!!!
How I get the duco this way:
Firstly I do a major paint detail every 6 months and then a minor detail every two months (canauba wax only)
strip the waxes off the duco wash down the car with degreaser and hose off
Nearly all paint duco damage happens in the hand wash stage, all those small swirl marks and holograms as the dirt washed off is held in the foam or mits, to stop this from happening I recommend a different washing method. The process I recommend is the two bucket method, and wash the cars with a PURE WOOL MIT: bucket for suds and a bucket for rinse of wool mit. I am carefull to wash the mit in the clean water after every pass and then dip in the suds bucket. I suggest that you purchase buckets that have a dirt trap insert in the base of the bucket, this allows the dir to fall through the holes and collecting in the bottom.
Polish and Shine (use Meguiars Final Detailer applied with a random orbital)
Lay down a layer of meguiars tech wax (has to be in this order as the tech wax does not stick to Canauba wax goes patchy)
Final layer of Meguiars Canuba wax / yellow wax. This used to be called yellow wax its still yellow but now has Canuba added this seals the final paint.Following this process you will hide pretty much all the little holograms, web type scratches etc.

I was there yesterday, pics don't do this car justice. New rim/tyre combo looks killer. Did ya see my 69??
hi j.j. was yours the blue 69 with the Torque Thruster 2's on it with spinners? looked good. Have you raised it a bit?
People keep saying that about the car, re pics dont do it justice, I am a bit used to it now.
Fletch was drooling, very nice guy and genuine car buff had a good yak to him for 20 mins. I was a bit of a Dickh*&d but in a funny way, fletch was in hysterics. Lots of fun good day.
What do you think of the engine bay?
I have COY's with spinners, looks similar to the Torque Thruster 2's. Nah havn't raised it but will be going lower at the front shortly.
I was standing at your car at around 11:30am with a few guys, my fiance and our english staffy for about 30 minutes looking at your car. Engine bay is immaculate. Attention to detail is amazing!!! Love the new look with the wheels, only thing is the rear rim needs more dish.

Well its time to upgrade the HP Holley Mechanical 140 gph pump.
Problem:
Fuel boiling and bubbling in bowls, atomising, running out of fuel at 4000 rpm.
Fix:
Tried cooling the fuel down by adding a bypass line, this helped a tiny bit but did not provide a solution.
Install a HP electric pump system with bypass reg.
Purchased and AEROMOTIVE A1000 pump good for 1300 hp, 4 port reg and 2 100 micron filters.

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/aerfilter.jpg
Not installed yet just purchased all the parts and have made the discreit modifications to the standard tank.
Installed a dash 6 line to the top of the tank and a dash 10 to the bottom of the tank.
I also removed the Demon 850 dp will never purchase one of these products again the quality is poor. Replaced with a Holley 750 HP ULTRA, simply amazing the result, the pump now can not keep up and it runs out of fuel at 4000 rpm. Looking good for 300 kw at wheels.

Our Camaros Mitch are aimed at enthusisasts that for what ever reason can not realise their dreams. We believe we have the toughest RTA registered 67/68/69 Camaros in Australia.
Most of our work are Weddings, our customers want serious looks, with serious sound and that is the way I have built this one. Its just making it reliable that is the challenge, whilst keeping the integrity of the design. Our other cars are more original in look but with monster power plants. Its a very thin line between whats legal and what is not keep in mind we have to submit RWC's gone over by a registered RTA outlet yearly, I will have to quieten mine next time and lift it 50mm in the front.

In an earlier post I saw that you gained 20kw at the rear wheels with larger headers ( 1 7/8" < 2") and a 3" exhaust.
Was this over the original 1 3/4" and what size exhaust system?

When you say WE, do you mean that there is a business community of Charter Camaro's in Melbourne? Do you have a web site or anything?
I must admit, we used my mates 57 Chev Belair for one of our wedding cars and part of the appeal is that his Mrs (who drives it) isn't shy of dropping a burnout or two!!
The RWC definately is a pain in the preverbial! Coming from New South I'm well aware of that... The licensing in WA is soooo much easier and cheaper as well. I can afford to have 2 cars Fully Compehensively Insured and licensed for the year for almost what it cost me for one in NSW..

Good day all round, met up with some USMUSCLE members and got chatting. Some great cars, good mix of resto to Custom, rod and wild custom.
The show was run by the lions club, a bit dissapointed at the end when trophies were presented, all the trophies were presented to Standard cars and nothing newer than 61. It seems that if you put on an event then you become a car expert and get to choose the cars that win awards. A bit concerning expecially if the Custom and later model chevs did not turn up then there would have only been a hand full of cars, not the 350+ that turned up.

Just a quickie - I'm a fan of your exhaust outlets & hoping to do similar on my in-progress '67 this week. I'm hearing mixed reports about exiting behind the rear wheels being legal. I thought was, so long as 40mm past floorpan join, not under body & b/w 15-45 degrees angle.

G'day Paul,
I'm hearing mixed reports about exiting behind the rear wheels being legal.
Originally my car passed a RWC in VIC but on a warning, previously the exhaust was just out behind the rear wheels. I was informed that VIC laws required it exited 12" from the rear windscreen. My new 3" system does this as it exits on an angle half way down the side of the rear quarters.

Maybe WA law is different than VIC law, they do change, when I was young the exhaust had to enter the further most part of the car by a given distance, this is why most people put ehaust extentions on their short exhasts to pass RWC's

Sorry cant do now, the springs came out yesterday and lifted the front to 80mm from the ground and about 1.5 inch above the tyres.
the old measure measurement was the guard was just level with the top of the tyre on 185 x 60 x 15's, you can see this in the pictures of the car that I took below at the recent GM day at yarra junction.

Hello All.
Its been awhile.
I have decided to convert my black standard interior back to red on red but in deluxe.
I have purchased all the parts this involves sourcing new front door winding internals, window winders, door opening parts most from OER.
Replacing carpet, dash board cover, door covers, etc.
Found a deluxe rear seat and the arm rests with ash trays.
All I need to find now are a set of red seat belts and then I will start the project.
The front left hand side seat is having all the base springs replaced, new foam deluxe padding for the front seats, i have purchased the tools to install.
The rear seat needs to be done professionally.
I have chosen the RED with BLACK stripe around the edge. Even though I have the Red headlining I am going to leave it black with the sail panels for now.
Has any one trimed the front seats in deluxe themselves? if they have how hard is it?
For all the read about my fuel problems you will be happy to know that its all settled down with the new pump and dash 8 return line, the car also sounds better because the car is stable with fuel to air ratio, instead of the fuel getting so hot atomising.
Look forward to your comments, I will start posting all the boxes soon as they are all here.

Good stuff Paul...
She'll be extra sweet now.
As far as I know, the front seat cover replacements are not that difficult to do as long as the foam is in good knick underneath... I'm pretty sure Chris has done them before. Send him a PM if you like? 68cmaro is his username.

Hello all.
Been pretty busy with the business to get time to contribute to my thread, but my promise to post them has been bugging me had time tonight so here they are. All the parts are just about in now to commence the interior change, the only parts that are not detailed in the pictures as they are dirty or greasy are: Back seats, window regulator cranks.
The arm rests are not in the photos as they are still in their box, I taped the box back up after going over them for quality. I am also going to paint the console with the special oer PAINT, and do the boot with the correct spatter paint.
I am also throwing in some latest pics of the camaro at an Orthodox wedding.
Nearly ready to do the change, probably late April.
Some may notice that the ride height is a bit different! I have raised the car from 30mm off the ground to 90mm, a lot of damage to the new headers. Stiffer springs the car actually handles corners really well, compared to the last set. Launches really well, no bouncing, needs some caltracs and it will be perfect. The rear springs are still to stiff and there is a tiny bit of axle hop and that is it. The car pulls straight.
Enjoy.

Are the bits of "tin" for the rear delux interior?
Nev
Hi Nev.
Re the tin, the rear seat is smaller than the standard coupe interior for the dlx, and on each side they put a small arm rest with ash trays recessed in them. Then there is the other peice of tin that is stamped with leather type marks which is painted the seat color to blend in, this why I went the matching OER red paint for plastic and trim parts.
Dave Clee got a bit of a shock on this one from customs as apparently its an offence to bring paint in through the system, its a hefty fine due to their explosive nature. Dave declaired it all and based on this was given a warning, pretty shi&&y though because this is a copy of the factory stuff and it makes it easier when matching all the different trim designs from factory.
I will start taking pics when the dissmantling commences.
The engine has developed a leak around the remote oil setup, have to drop the bottom off it as its leaking, my budget for the interior will be put on hold due to mechanical repairs and the this months service.

Hello all, I have not had time to install the new interior yet, however all the parts are here from Dave now.
I am concidering upgrading the 406 again in the chase for more HP: i.e. big roller cam, cnc head porting of the dart plantenums, scat crank, new rods, upgraded gold series yellow terra or jessell roller rockers, double valve springs and a rev kit, just the start. 4000 stall probably a nitrous converter. We should get another 100 hp, aiming for over 420 hp at the wheels or 600 at the flywheel, and then later on put 200 shot of nos in the system. Upping the comp to 11.1, I will probably also need to upgrade the 3.7's to 4.11's. The engine already has a lot of good gear so its probably going to cost around 14k, then in a couple of years I will put a blown 572 in.

X3 BBC time
Why not bbc now? good question.
I did some costing last week and spoke with several people, to get the sort of power that I desire the outlay would be around 23-29k (572) or s/h blown 454.
So I started costing zz502 which have gone up to mid 15k, add another 4k for removal refit and small parts also the exhaust.
Money is tight at the moment, so what i have said to myself is refresh this motor, and use it for another 2 years and then replace with a wild bbc.
Unless something comes along that has all the good bits like Rodents bbc at the right price I cant do it yet.
The other thing, this SBC 406 of mine already sounds like a bbc on the street.
What do you all think??????

All right this is a possible scenario and I would appreciate any advice or if someone knows of an engine that fits the bill:
Locate a rebuilt 454-502 motor around 600hp with quality parts and recently rebuilt. With the potential for more.
budget 10 to 12k
sell the 406, $5500 ($15k invested)
Install the new engine.
I will retire this car from weddings, and use it only for showing and cruising.Jim (rodent) your engine would be perfect however its out of my budget, the timing of this is not good however as some have suggested it will cost a lot more if in the long run if I rebuild the sbc and then upgrade.
Thanks guys.

Here's another option for you Paul http://www.shafiroff.com/ I've been snooping around their website lately as i'm getting the urge to put a BB in the '57. Shafiroff crate engines seem to offer more hp per dollar compared to the World and GM crate engine's.
cluxford
19-05-2009, 12:56 PM
That is a pretty good price. $US$18K for a blown 540
I paid US$16,990 for my 632, not blown though (but still 816Hp at the flywheel), + $450 shipping, then had to pay GST when it landed. I basically got it here for $20,800 AUD all up (aussie peso was way better then).
Their 502 is Cheaper still. Shairoff does seem to have a slightly better name though. World mass produce. But I am very happy with what I got for the price.
Then it needed all the extra stuff, flexplate, starter, pulleys, alt, water pump etc. Oh I did change single Demon carb for dual Edelbrocks. (which they now offer as an option).
If money were no object, I would go one of these:
http://www.nelsonracingengines.com/pricesheets/chevy/dailydriver/roots/dds_572bbc_roots.pdf
But US$25K...for 900 Horses. For $27K you get the same motor of race gas with 1100 Hp.

The fun starts. I will post some pics soon.
Got the motor and the 671 home.
Ordered the following for the conversion and taken delivery:
Hp weiand bbc manifold
825 holley
7" duel diaphram chrome brake booster
Willwood 1 1/8 polished master cylinder
GM2 (small) power steering pump
ZOOPS polished pwr steering low mount bracket
MSD 130 AMP polished sexy alternator and bracketry
Hooker Competition headers arrived 2" primaries to 3.5" collectors
Billet twin V water pump pulley
US GM correct BBC Engine mount saddles, and energy suspension urethane mounts
Still have to sort out the bracketry for the MSD Alternator and a SWP as the blower belt sits in front of this.
Purchased a standard set of Ralleys with full trims and they are on the car now. SOME ONE PINCH ME! I am going for the std look for a while but keeping the warriers for fun.
Have commenced to strip down the 502 and check everything and then put it back together and install in the car with the 4 barrel setup. I will jet hot coat the Headers, Intake and Water pump.
THE BLOWER GOES ON SOMETIME AROUND HERE:cool: :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Been saving for a while Deano.
Now have my 406 SBC 4 sale, complete with headers to alt except for cowl induc and fuel log or MSD Pro billet 85551, have a new in box HEI instead.
I will have the CCP 11" booster and master cylinder available, has had less than 3000kms use.
502 long water pump never used
502 std sump never usedAll the accessories are here now with the exception of a bracket for the alternator, dont know what I will do here until I get the motor in.
I will have a go at the 3/8 fuel line for the carbs myself, I will look at purhasing one of those small line benders and seek advise on the right speeflow fittings.
The engine bay will be a show pony by the time im finished, many think its fantastic now, however I get really used to things quickly, its a disease......... cars are!!
Due to the visual of the new engine and the blower and all the polished stuff I am not to fussed about the HP, however it should be around 700 at the flywheel when finished. We are aiming to drop the comp on the 502 from 8.7 down to 8.0 so that we can run more boost, around 10 psi if needed.
Its all down to the motor now, as soon as it comes out after selling the sooner the motor goes in.
Im making a lot of promises here, I still owe everyone some pictures.
THE CAR LOOKS WEIRD WITH RALLEYS ON IT, THE ONLY REAL NON FACT IS THE GUAGES ON THE SCUTTLE PANEL.
does the SBC still have oil leak issues?

does the SBC still have oil leak issues?
No it was all fixed up; it was the remote filter line, a swollen O ring seal, and the front timing cover seal, so we fixed it and did the bi monthly service and it ready for cruising, or sitting in the garage due to rain.
PM me or contact me on 0433 645 777 if you need.
This engine is Classified as a MILD engine but its just on the edge of WILD. It will need an electric pump and return line, and it will also need a good radiator system, if you do this then it will serve you well.
If I had have waited a bit longer I would not have had to spend what I have on the upgrade.:o

Below is a picture of why we pull down a brand new motor to check things.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/Image001.jpg
What we have here are two push rods; 3/8 & 7/16, the 3/8 pushrod is correct for the motor, however the same can not be said for the 7/16 unit. Putting this asside it may have lasted, however look at the length of the unit.
We have also found a lot of metal dust, looks like gold in the bottom of an prospecting pan, and some larger milling crud.
Motor looks as it was expected to, the heads have been sent out for checking.:)
We are putting Heavy Duting head bolts that will stand up to the boost. And replacing the standard rocker gear with roller rockers.
Last week two wise people said "dont trust the crate motor" words of wisdom! I was always going to pull this down due to past experience.
Here are some pictures of the shopping list in boxes ready to be installed; what you dont see are the headers, Weiand HP 4 barrel manifold, 850 vac sec carb, MSD pro billet????? Enjoy:

This is a merry go round!
My guy that builds heads has my new 502 heads to go over.
Started dismanteling the heads and found the exhaust valves almost push through their seat, way to small.
We dont know what the valves are for yet, and the heads dont show any sign of tampering. There were a couple of other things that did not pass the pull down, another $1500 up the pooper. Replacing valve seats for better ones, and sourcing Manley valves.
I was advised that the engine would not have lasted 50kms before serious damage occured and major cam damage.
SO THATS WHY WE PULL DOWN MASS PRODUCED GM STUFF.

A mate brought a GM 572 crate motor a couple of years ago. He started it up and pistons kissed valves.. he ended up getting a refund (only a store credit from where he purchased it). So make sure ya check your piston to valve clearance. Good thing that you pulled it down to inspect because although the motors are built from quality parts the checking on assembly is not carried out correctly, suppose this is what happens when you mass produce?

Hi Nev.
Yes it was new & unbroken.
Purchased from someone accumulating parts for his project and he went a different direction.
We were carefull to check the cosmetic side of the motor out before turning a bolt and everything was in order none of the seals were broken or cracked showing signs of tampering.
We pulled this down due to my astute mechanic who had heard a lot of stories and so did his other business mates, so I followed his guidance! glad I did.
Sorry guys my postings maybe boring by not having images, I just dont get time to record things due to my business.

So this is a GM performance ZZ502?
This is poor quality control.
I assume there is a warranty with these motors
Can you get any compensation?
At least some replacement parts and a gasket set would be nice.

So this is a GM performance ZZ502?
Because the engine is over 12 months old they dont want to know me on either problem. They wouldnt even give me a push rod, luckilly for me they referred me to a marine business in Patterson Lakes, but I still had to drive from Nunawading to Patterson lakes to purchase one.
Nev this is the 502HO, didnt want the zz502 as the comp is two high for the blower, so I had the option on the lower comp model, and we are dropping this to around 8:1
On the postive side, their can not be any more suprises as their is nothing more to dissasemble.
Also the quality of parts are fantastic, its just the dam assembly.

Pretty piss poor quality of workmanship by the guy doing the assembly, especially by someone who gets paid to assemble engines all day every day. Certainly don't expect these sorts of problems from a brand new crate engine.
I take it then that the GM crate engines are'nt dyno'd before they leave the factory ? If they were, i would think there quality control would be improved and there scrap heap would be much bigger.
As you say Paul, there can't possibly be any more surprises and it will all be forgotten the minute you plant the right foot to floor for the first time with that blown big block on full noise  :D

Thats what I keep focusing on, and I am NOT that angry that its happened. I got bitten just like most of us at sometime trusting in anothers workmanship on another engine that was meant to be bells and whistles, it lasted a couple of months.
I am looking for some good HP from a well built engine, this way its life will be longer rather than shorter.
Not that I am a 1/4 miler should be good for low to mid 10's, and some serious smoking at any speed.
SHOULD I PUT A GOVERNMENT WARNING ON THE SIDE OF THE CAR ABOUT SMOKING AND ITS AFFECT ON LIFE?

Project BLOWN 502 is finally moving forward.
Sold the 400, and now the removal is planned, this means also the reassembly also needs to speed up so that Install can occur.
During the trial fit of the new motor will also fit the header and sort and close issues and then send out for JET HOT coating, also the water pump.

Awesome.... Did it sell locally? Any story behind what the old donk will go into?
The motor was of all things sold to someone around the corner from me, someone that is also around the same vintage as well.
Interestingly he currently has a 400 however his is on the wild side 13.1 comp and over 700 hp, very hard on the family when going to events. Apparently its going into a HG or similar with a double hump sump.
In the end it came down to three people wanting the motor one wanted me to trade outside of ebay and the other two bidded for the engine.
The purchaser did his sums and also checked over the motor top to bottom, as he had built his motor recently he new what value there was in mine and could see the money.
EXTRACTORS FOR SALE
So I now have a set of Hooker Comp Headers that cost me $1100 landed plus HPC ceramic coating inside and out. All up $1450. They have a few scrapes on the bottom but they are 1 7/8 to 3.5" flange, tuned length. I also had bungs welded into each side for air flow meters incase you go to fuel injection or for dyno work near collector.
100 AMP ALTERNATOR + Billet bracket
5 months old or so fully polished single wire gm which means internal regulator. A must for camaro or similar.
So Cal type billet bracket.
COMPLETE SET OF PULLEYS
Water pump billet pulley
Crank Steel twin V Chromed pulley
67 ENGINE MOUNTS
Complete set of engine mounts and sadles for SBC, will even throw in a chain to hold down the motor.
FUEL PUMP
Holley 110 gal fuel pump, needs a return line added.
POWER STEERING
Saginaw power steering pump and bracketry all new only months ago, paint black. Cost nearl $400 from memory.
I dont like putting things on evil bay due to the ever increasing time wasters, and question askers. Would rather move them onto to people that actualy need them.

UPDATE::D
Got the heads back all finished with the exception of replacing the standard rocker gear with some COMP CAMS product
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x102/bucketofbubbles_detailing/400-400-HiTechStainlessRocker-001.jpg
Originally I was looking at Comp Cams Pro Magnums in Chrome Moly however my supplier did not have them, however they did have the HI TECH Stainless Steel Product instock tougher again, good to over 1500 hp.
We have also decided to install ARP Head Studs for easier work on the heads and head gasket replacement.
Also found that on the piston boars some sharp edges :( on nearly all of the 8 so the block has now gone off to the machine shop for deburing, and some further relief work. Dont want to damage the pistons
Interestingly these motors still only use a SINGLE ROW timing chain so I have put a DOUBLE ROW in as well.
Rings were also to tight so we have done some work there as well to loosen them up, concerns over boar damage.
We are obviously building this for durability and toughness to handle the blower.
Hopefully all back together and in the car within 3 weeks.

16/7/09 I have decided to replace all the rings and use some better quality HP types, they failed our quality tests.
16/7/09 One boar was the slightly undersize so we honed up that boar.
16/7/09 Front mains bearing has had to be replaced as it was overtightened, so we finished the area up better.
16/7/09 All parts have been balanced under duress, and now the slow process of reassembly has commenced.
16/7/09 This has added around $3000 to the install cost, but I am glad that I followed this path! not only for me but for all those on the forum.
16/7/09 Picked up the linkage kit for the 3310-3 750 Vac sec for the blower, as they are forward facing.
By the time we are finished it will rev harder, develop more hp and have reliability.

Paul,
wow, for a crate motor I would have expected better, might have been easier to start with a bare block. I haven't pulled mine down I hope and pray it doesn't have the same issues, that said mine has been dynoed and tuned before shipping, but that still doesn't mean it won't have issues
maybe I should just blow it and pull it down before hitting the streets

Hi Chris.
The feedback that I have had back from various machine shops via my group working the motor is that there is a difference between Marine Motor and Motors destined for Production Line Carsfrom a build quality perpective, forget what the sales hype says. Custom motors are generally fine I am informed, however I have heard some negative stories from this area as well. Chris, a quick pull down could be a good investment, certainly for peace of mind.
Dont take this as me being a POO FAIRY I am just reporting the facts and my personal experience with this brand new 502 engine.
I dont know how true this is however my sources advise me that the marine motors are mostly Mexican built but the motors destined for the production line cars are US Built.
This motor has everyone worried that has worked on it, if we put aside the wrong parts in the engine, how would we know about the poor tollerances and casting issues until several years down the track?
POSITIVE SIDE
Its still going to be a cheap motor by the time its finished. With all the good stuff in it from GM and the work that has been carried out to correct poor workmanship and then the upgraded parts, I have been informed to day that this motor would cost over 20k to replace. Looking forward to its first dyno run.

Update on build up:
Treat these images as gold only due to the fact that images are rarely taken :D
The 502 HO has been returned today from all the machining work, and special rings made for this motor in the states.
The build will now commence and start putting things back in the engine bay.
Lower Gilmer pulley has been machined down so it has a centre lip so it locates on the crank balance without relying on the three bolts to locate. I am informed this will remove any alignment issues. its also been balanced other parts have been rebalanced like the harmonic balancer.

Paul, I know the engine is the big thing for you at the moment but didn't you have an interior kit to go for red upholstery?

Hi Nev.
Yes I have the whole kit ready to go, the reason for the stalling of this project was to originally repair some oil leaks, and the oil leaks lead to their repair and the purchase of the 502 and blower.
When the engine is done, I want to put the interior kit in and retire the car from active work with weddings.
My intention is to put the door moulds in, carpets, spray the console, and install the deluxe window mechanisms myself, and then pay a trimmer to install the covers and new foam, and repair one of the seats, as I want this looking perfect.
The only other way for me would be if anyone I knew was able to help me
we could get the seats done on a saturday and takle the rest there after.

Not sure about your circumstance with your builder Paul but my engine took over a year to do :( I can give you my guys number if you'd like but you may just end up in the same boat :( Not telling you what or not to do but you may have to be patient :o A lot of these guys have other stuff on that makes them their real cash. Not saying that you cash is not as good as someone elses but, some of these guys look at projects like yours/mine as a bit spesh, and want to put more time into it without killing you in the pocket.
I know my guy charges around $90 an hour, but I know he put a lot more into it than I got billed for :)

I'd have to agree with Jim, although patience is not one of my strong points either. Switching builders may piss the guy off and a new builder may want to do things differently putting you 1 step forward and 2 back.
If you do decide you need to change builders i'd talk to Matt Lagoon. He built the Bob Jane ZL1 engine. He's just returned from Bonneville with the Big Knob racing salt car (Norm Hardinge, Aussie desert coolers) which he built the engine for also.
See how you go, I can pass on contact details if you want.

The motor is to be run in without the blower, for a couple of months so that we can settle any bugs first aslo I want to run it in without to much stress. Its not going to sound anywhere near as tough as the 406 until the forced air is installed.

Im almost the same; have a retail business but not drawing a salary yet, havent for several years just keep dropping cashing into it. I am giving it 12 months more, and a relocation to better location.
A mate of mine has one of those(Adult shop :) ),had it for about 8 years. Not sure it's ever made a buck but he keeps on pouring cash into it:(
What sort of business?

Its not much and everything is dirty and generally looking poor.
Motor is in, and now all the fidly bits.
The willwood master cylinder does not fit the duel diaphram booster, have to organise some other parts. Mainly bolts and things.
Looking for a booster bracket and master cylinder to fit as a kit locally to avoid mucking around if anyone knows a contact.
