GM promises plenty of horsepower in refreshed Corvette
Updated roadster's engine will be 6.2-liter, small-block V-8 capable of hitting 190 mph.
Jim Harris can take or leave the snazzy new paint tones and tweaked-out sound system in the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette.
He doesn't care much about the new satellite radio capability or fancy wheel rims, either.
A longtime lover of all things 'Vette, Harris is really only interested in one stat: 430 horsepower.
That's the punch General Motors Corp. promises for its refreshed roadster due in showrooms this year. Pricing hasn't been announced.
"Performance wise, you think, 'How can they get any better?' " said Harris, 65, of Lennon and governor of the Flint Corvette Club. "And then they do."
The Corvette's new engine will be a 6.2-liter, small-block V-8 that GM says is capable of hitting 190 miles per hour.
An LS3, with six-speed, paddle shift automatic transmission, will be the fastest automatic Corvette yet, boasting 0-60 in 4.3 seconds.
Also new for '08:
# Split-spoke cast aluminum wheel design.
# Keyless access with remote key fob.
# iPod/MP3 jacks included on most sound systems.
# OnStar and XM Satellite Radio standard on all models
# Two new exterior metallic tintcoat colors: Jetstream Blue and Crystal Red.
The Corvette's update may help tide over buffs frothing over the possibility of a 2009 Corvette SS, a 600-plus horsepower super car dubbed by some as the "Blue Devil" after GM CEO Rick Wagoner's alma mater, Duke University.
"The vehicle is beautifully designed," says Erich Merkle, senior auto analyst with IRN. "It represents tremendous value for the money -- there isn't any other vehicle on the world that can compete with the Corvette at that price."
