Nice.. you done more work in 1 day than i did in 3 months :p
The fit looks preety good. have to be happy with that.. and can't see much rust in that.. you got a good one :p
What bits are you using for the RHD? from what car?
P.S. you sure it's safe up there? i'm guessing workcover don't visit you :p

cheers guys,
it was easier with 2 guys on the job especially with the old man helping me :D
there wasnt too much rust in the thing... just the dodgy panel work... spaghetti jobs on both sides :( ... when i move the car ill take some good pics of the pass side (RHS) once you get the bog off a different story indeed
the RHD rack pinion is a remanufactured commodore with cnc cut mounting brackets that need to be welded in. Its non-power steering, but not too fussed there anyways.... part number RP-09 cost $1100 from Castlemaine rod shop. It comes with all parts needed and 2 uni joints for your steering. It will clear the engine once you get a different sump. Im running a dry sump setup, so i ill be clear on that!.
and for worksafe... .*shows the birdy* 44gallon drums for the win!!...
if it falls, i guess sh*t happens

bumpity bumparoo...
im very happy with our progress... our date of completion is around october-november (summertime) hell yeah!
yeah kurt thats why we are all here.. this work isnt for the faint hearted.. though i do get slight loss of breath at times knowing the panels still need to line up or its work for nothing... when all else fails... bog is the answer :D haha

well you put me to shame.. today I got my door hinges stripped and painted up... thats it.. :p
You're really chewing through it.. good on ya!
And just thought i'd say it looks like a VW in this pic :p
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/1180/p4280005vp5.jpg
And your floor looks good.. allot better than most i've seen..
But the orriginal guard looks terrible :p
I know there are a few US guy's reading this forum.. I'd love to know why they love there body filler for a dented panel work... I recon it would have cost them more in time and product to pack that and get it looking right.. a patch panel would've been cheaper and quicker...
All i've got left to say is.. unreal.. you'll be done in no time..

G'day boys and gals!
apologies for not updating this thread... i've been busy with the caddy's etc... not much has happened to the camaro in the past couple months! the old man is pretty crook, so thats had a little damper on the build :
but this still has to go on! im in the process of ordering a hydraulic handbrake setup.. i found a guy who lives 150kms north-east of perth who is keen to convert the dash and firewall to RHD for me... and that way we can get the ball rolling! The hilborn mechanical injection system will be converted to EFI for ease of daily driving and track work.
ive started to strip the front subframe and get it prepared for some Rack and pinion loving... pics in the next month *fingers crossed*
cheers,

Update 1
Just sent an email this week to DSE for some goodies for the rear...I will weigh it up if its sent straight to my door, or get a local shop in Perth to load up parts in a container (San Francisco) to land here in May '08...

^^^
This is a great way to upgrade from original leaf spring suspension. Unlike our competitors, DSE's exclusive new 4-link geometry design is uncompromised to achieve the best possible handling. The new DSE "Swivel-Link" (Patent Pending) allows the suspension to fully articulate with smooth solid motion an no binding. The best feature is that this is achieved without heim-joints. Heim-joints are noisy and prone to short-term life. The DSE QUADRA Link utilizes tuned high-durometer rubber bushings (in place of heim joints or squeaky urethane bushings). The long upper links provide great pinion and u-joint angle control. Contrary to competitors' kits, our kit utilizes a panhard rod that provides precise and effective rear axle lateral location during hard cornering. The panhard rod is adjustable as ride height changes for roll center control. The rear upper shock crossmember strengthens the rear body and frame section. Don't settle for anything less than DSE's QUADRA Link rear suspension!

^^^
DSE's RS Headlight Door Kit replaces the stock vacuum actuated system on an RS headlamp equipped 1968 or 1969 Camaro. It also makes converting your non-RS Camaro to hide-away headlights much easier. When installed, this kit will operate the headlight doors more reliably, smoother, and without the complicated and bulky vacuum accessories. Vehicles with large cams and low vacuum signals will also benefit from this system. The RS Headlight kit uses current sensing technology to provide a system that needs no adjustment and is extremely safe. DSE has gone to great lengths to provide you with the highest quality, best engineered product available with the easiest installation and minimal modification to your vehicle. The kit comes complete with everything needed for installation including two electric actuators, a control module, harness, mounting brackets, and hardware.

Update 2
I managed to secure a shop in Osborne Park that will convert my Hilborn manifold to EFI. The company is keen to drill the epoxy plugs and weld it in for me (around 500bux) ill have to then make my own fuel rail and supply my injectors, im thinking to grab some 500-700cc. Still this process would be owing me around $1800-$2000. This is good value since the Hilborn EFI from factory is around 6k USD! With engine management, im looking at running a Motec.
The search is on for a new/old diff... im leaning towards a 12bolt. Saw a nice Baldwin Motion rear diff cover on ebay.. its the finned cover and looks hot!
:)

DSE stuff is awesome, I have their minitubs, narrowed fuel tank and some small billet goodies. I seriously considered their 4 link rear, but decided to go a fabbed one locally with a shortened 9 inch.
Talk to Mark in DSE, he was great and helped me out heaps.
Can't wait to see that stuff under the car.

i would love to see that DSE 4 link during the installation process muggz. i nearly bought one of them myself but decided on the Heidts Hotrod Shop one instead as it is a complete bolt in deal whereas the DSE needs cutting and welding of the floor which i did'nt want to do.
I would agree though that the DSE one is probably the best one on the market at the moment so your car will hook up and handle great

Did you run the 11 on the Heidt's rear end? That's impressive. The Heidt's is the one with a frame that screws to your existing rear frame rails right? Did you need to do much to set it up for the right weight transfer and hook up?

yes ran the 11 with the 4 link kit, it's been in the car for about 15 months now. The Heidts kit (above) bolts to the rear frame rail and to the floor behind the back seat. The lower long bar mounts to the front leaf spring mount using the factory bracket.
I'm no expert at setting up a 4 link for drag cars so i just made sure that the diff was central and square to the car. i took some measurements either side from the tyres and diff to a couple of points on the body and made sure they were all the same each side. Also important to get the pinion angle correct. I must of done something right as the car launched and ran very straight so i was very happy with that.
As for weight transfer to the rear i just wound the rear springs down to almost as low as it could go and adjusted the setting on the rear shocks to the softest setting. the front springs have a lot more tension on them that the rear so i left them at about an inch off the bottom and also set the front shocks to the softest setting. Not quite the same as 90/10 shock but probably as close to it as my set up allows. I have a 3500rpm converter but was only leaving the line at about 2800rpm with a 26 x 8.5" slick and 4.11 gears and did'nt have any traction problems. My best 60ft time was 1.596 but on the 11.05 run it was 1.642.
If anyone here has some experience with setting up and fine tuning 4 links for racing i would love to hear your comments on the above to see if i'm heading in the right direction or if i should be making any changes
I highly recommend changing from a leaf spring to an adjustable coil over setup in a 1st gen camaro anyday. well worth it

Thanks Tuff68. Cool setup. I must have been thinking of a different brand which has a sub frame that screws, with 40 or so screws, to the rear frame rails.
I did some development work many years ago to improve the 4 link rear on LJ Toranas for drag racing. Stock it creates pure squat on the back. With modified upper links we got it to leave far more effectively. It seemed (and it was more art than a science we were working with) that if we got the lines from the upper and lower arms to virtually intersect about level with the firewall, we got the best effect. Supposedly that was around the CG of the car and created uniform lift of the whole body to load the rear tyres most effectively.
It looks like you have two options for the upper control arms, so I would guess that if you are running the upper hole on the rear axle end, this may give the best loading of the tyres.
Never got into it too deep, but judging by the way various racers in the US ran 4 links, its always a compromise which balances power, grip, rear end torque, manual or auto, and whether you want to leave with a lot of downward shock on the rear tyres as the clutch is dropped or the convertor hooks up, or progressive and constant downforce on the tyres which punishes the drive train less.
Would be interesting to hear from someone on here that has gone through a lot of track testing with a 4 link and come up with the best times at the end of it.
Cheers.

Placed the order 13th March... The parts should arrive at container by 1st April.

An update.. few things happened of late..
Firstly - Performance Unlimited were doing an EFI conversion on my HIlborn manifold, but the shop over east cannot make it happen.. but are trying to sell me something similar that is all made and ready to drop in on the motor.
I might look at option of sending it off to the US. A company called Blower Drive Service (http://www.blowerdriveservice.com/) they are reputable in converting mechanical to EFI. SO i might bite the bullet and go for that!
Secondly- Basically i got off my ass and pulled apart the subframe to bare metal.. taking in for blasting on monday, I will then drop it into a engineering shop that will weld in the rack and pinion.. then i can start bolting on the suspension goodies and *maybe* get the car rolling only to wait for the DSE 4 link.. getting excited now.

Update!
Finally got the subframe project rolling.
A friend of a friend helped me out with the welding side of things. I was happy with the results. Its a pity that Detroit Speed sent me 2 (Left Hand Side) coilover mounts instead of 1 Right and 1 Left hand side!!
We also welded in the Castlemaine rod shop Rack & Pinion and it looks very nice! Hope to get the proper shock RHS mount and get the thing checked by an engineer within the next 4 weeks.
I have attached some pictures below! :)

Easy as:

MMMMmmmmmmm,
Another Perth Camaro....
Do all of you Perthies get together at any time? Ever have a bit of a Tech day or anything?
I'm about to embark on a resto/rebuild myself on my 68 and wouldn't mind catching up with some people that have been there and done that to get some idea of what to do and what not to do!

There's more 1st gen Camaro's in Perth than you think Mitch. I know of 5 black 68's alone (including yours). I also know there is 6 1st gens within about a 5Km radius of my house, although 1 was for sale about 2 months ago so not sure if it has sold or not
Don't worry, there's plenty of people on this forum to help you out with anything during your resto/rebuild, so ask away..........

Ok so back to topic :)
Just mocked up my rear brake setup..
DBA came to the game and supplied 4000 slotted rotors.. Got my brembo park brake calipers in mail last week so i need to rebuild these. I wonder what is the paint code for the red corvette calipers as i want to match the 2 up :) I just need to get the brackets made up and i can start picking out a nice rear diff.. hmm 9'' or 12 bolt.. decisions!

Cheers guys.. there is actually more happening than just the brakes but i need to take more pictures hehe
Yeah Cluxford, those brakes are the best investment in my project.. esp when i saw a shop selling a kit from PBR for 6k AUD!! i got my whole setup for less than half that! :)
Mitch, Ive got 6 pots for the front running to DBA 5000 (2 piece rotors) i think i posted them a few pages back.
Now im tackling the conversion for my Hilborn. Changing from Mechanical to EFI is proving an interesting ride and im learning on the way. Pics to follow soon :)

Just thought id bump my thread.
I have been doing a little soul searching in the past couple weeks and finally decided to scrap the RHD conversion idea. It has been hard coming to that conclusion but its hopefully the best way to do it.
At least i only welded in the RHD rack so that's easy to grind off.
Im thinking of going for a power LHD rack (Unisteer, Flaming River)
About a couple months ago, I received my stainless bolt set and along with my Electric life window setup with switches from Prodigy Customs.
Paint wise i been thinking to go a satin black base coat with a 30cm stripe with the teal blue length ways.. again something different but ill get our friend to draw a mock up and we'll see :D

I don't really see the benefit in the added expense of going to right hand drive myself. Although it does make it a little more practical for us Aussies...for the amount of driving we'll probably do... is it worth it?

Could'nt agree more Mitch. I've had my LHD '57 for over 12 years now and i've only done about 10-15k Km's with it. Not worth it in my opinion.

I just want the car rolling sometime this year *fingers crossed*

unless tou have a Yenko or Baldwin Camaro these things are a dime a dozen and it won't matter if it is left or right hand drive, if it is staying in Australia I believe they are more saleable as RHD. In Texas last year an Australian RHD 69 Camaro was sold for $150,000 US because "they wanted something different" so IMO if you are going to do heaps of miles in the car convert it as they are a lot nicer and safer to drive.

Im with you Chris on this, ive had around 9 yankees now and had left & rhd , but the last 2 ive only wanted rhd , easier to sell if conversions done correctly. imo

Hai guys!
Decided to bump this since ive started to get this project going slowly yet again haha!
So to start things off:
http://www.motorworldhype.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/stack_8130-white-light.jpg
enroute from Finland :)
After lots of deliberation between me and my wallet ive decided to stick with LHD and just get the thing going ASAP
Just getting a parts list to buy some steering goodies from DSE
steering gear, links, rag joint etc
BTW im after a drag link for a '68 Camaro if someone has one to sell :)
Also undecided with rear end (9'', 12 bolts...) anyone can chime in with ideas. The intention is to run this car for track work (RAC, Barbagallo, Collie) with the occasional cruise here and there.. Car wont be pushing more than 350-400hp from the flywheel.
Ive got the brackets from DSE for the quadralink so ill need to have it welded on locally.
I emailed Marquez design asking if they would sell the custom dash kit on its own but nearly a week on and no reply.. so i guess thats a ''NO'' hehe
edit: oh and ive also bought new park brake calipers from Tyler (from ATS and Anvil Auto fame) I had a set of these Brembo calipers but they are next to impossible getting parts so his set came up for a good price and i snapped them up.. bolts, brackets, pads :)
Now to make them fit!

Marquez are fricken hopeless on email. I wanted to get them to do some custom billet stuff for me, in the end gave up and got some stuff made locally instead.
I love the gauges, I was looking at Penny (Steve Rupp's) and he's done an electronic dash / data monitoring system like that.
If I ever build a serious track car I'd definitely go that route.
Glad to see you moving this forward Muggz. Bet your excited

Just bumping this...
So i finally took the plunge.. I will be doing a RHD conversion with the AOI rack and column.
I dropped in to see Scott @*Torque Fabrications
It so happens that he is in the process of doing a custom build for a customers '68 Camaro.. RHD using AOI parts, custom dash, vintage air system.. man it looks good!
So my car is tentatively reserved to enter workshop Feb/Mar '11
At the moment im waiting on an email from AOI so i can reserve my stuff.
Also looking at DSE subframe connectors and looking for a muncie M22 locally but also open to a tremec tko as well.
Anyone bringing in a container over the next few months? :D

Hey Muggz, long time no hear. The best way to get stuff over from the States is Lee at Importperfection, there are a few of us that use her to bring stuff in, very reasonable.
