Anyone had any experience changing a skin :p
One of my doors.. the Right (Australian drivers side) skin has seen better days.. the frame is very solid and in good nick, i suppose it is repairable, but if i can re-skin or get another door i think i will...
But back to skinning a door.. I understand the basics, and from what i've been told it might be something i should leave to a professional?
I'll probably take off the old skin as that seems easy enough.. from what i've been told it's only a matter of un-crimping and grinding down the edges and pulling the old one off...
Also been told to not finalise the new skins position on the frame until i have the door sitting on the hinges so i can line it up 100%, makes sense to me.. is that how others would do it? If thats so i could probably put it on like that myself...
Considering a door skin costs $110 ($US) and a complete new door is $330 ($US) *both repro's and not including shipping etc...
I've had a look at a few second hand doors, not the best but i can pick one up for about $100 (with my old one as a changeover). The ones i saw all needed some work, the lines were either missing or just not straight.. it's a tough decision...
I might give the guy from ACT a call and see what he has available but i'm someone who likes to see what i buy especially if it's second hand

Steve, skins are another thing that my missus said i could buy in the future as mine are rooted. I will be buying two for mine and will be getting them shipped to Pomona. To big to ship out air so i'll have to suck up the wait.
One of the forums i frequent there is a Goodmark stockist\reseller who looks after members on the site. He lives in Minesotta but i still may be able to get a deal........can ask if your interested?
cheers
Jim

i'll confirm my cost of the skin, as last time i mentioned it, Pete in in Lylidale said he might have some in stock.. if i can get it cheap enough and it's already here i might as well get it from him.
I'd still probably prefer a good second hand door.. but i'm sure that will just be too hard... I'm sure cluxford could tell us how hard it is to get a good door for any early camaro's..
Still want to know how hard it is to re-skin the door... doesn't look too difficult.. but sounds it... to easy to stuff up....

Well next time i'll make sure to search the net more thoroughly!
Reading through all that though it doesn't seem to hard does it...
Wish i had a cheaper test door and skin to try it on.. might see if i can find a commodore one i can practice on :p
hmmmm........ or save myself the trouble and get a full door... but i know that will just cause more problems.. fitting, gaps, etc..
I think i'll go to bed and think it over :p
Thanks again Jim, atleast now i have them printed for tommorow... ;)
Steve.

Jim, Steve....2nd hand doors.....these things are as hard to get as a date with a supermodel...I've found some dinged up ones that are rust free but need some work, in the US by the time they get here it will be cheaper to go repos...even though I have heard all the bad stories....but given all my panels are repo except the doors, boot and bonnet, I'm hoping it won't be an issue.....
Good luck skinning, that's one tough looking job
Cheers
Chris

yeah as i said i've been looking for a while just see if i could get a door, but they were all rubbish..
The thing is my frame is in good nick.. seems a waste to buy 1 whole new door..
I'll give re-skinning a shot.. only way to learn i suppose :p
