View Full Version : Project Hellfire - 68 Camaro Pro-touring Build
cluxford

OK all, time for me to join the party. We have a 67 on this borard and a 69...I'm a middle child so I might as well be a "middle" build. Lucky I got the best model of the 3.
A bit of background. I have always wanted a 68 Camaro since I was really little and as many others saw "one crazy summer". Over the years I basically worked out all the little things I wanted and it would be nothing short of a blown big block full on pro-street animal. 3 years ago I even paid a deposit on one that was tubbed, caged with a 468 BBC blown. But let it go as found out couldn't get it registered.
With 3 years to ponder and do some more research I found I could get some things registered and keep the car close to what I wanted.
So the hunt began for another donor car. That hunt ended in Nov 06 when on Melb cup day I nervously bid on ebay for a 68 Camaro (that you see below)
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_1911-1.jpg
The car arrived in Australia in Early March.
I haven't done anything to it yet except go over it and look at what I have bought check out whether it was a good deal.
Paid US$9K for it and $3300 aussie for shipping. Landed cost was $16K aussie not a bad deal in my mind.
So what does it have......this is an interesting read:
All new qtrs all 4 of em
All new roof
All new floors including new boot
All new front inner guards
New carpet
Everything else orginal.
Whilst the panels are good in that they are new (ie really straight - except 1 minor travel dint in rear LH side) the panel gaps leave a little to be desired so they will somehow need to be sorted out.
Doors are really rough. I was hoping frames would be OK but they are rusted through so hunt on for new doors.
The build...what will the car end up as?
I can show potenial "after" photos...my car won't be exactly the same but a sort of combo of various ideas from these cars:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/67-2.jpg
Love this look, this one was fully tubbed, mine will be just mini tubbed but I am after that stance
Interior will be something like this but not in white
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/2063064_8.jpg
Car may look something like this but not in fluro green...
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/DCP_0951.jpg
What I am building is:
Pro-touring (in no particular order)
632 Ci BBC - crate engine, has been dynoed and is on the boat on the way here. 816Hp (0r 607 Kw). Will run dual quads with Hilborn scoop through bonnet
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/MerlinLimitedEdition.jpg
T400
Art Morrison sub frame with C5 Vette front end and 13" Wilwood 6 spots
Here is a thread that shows the sub frame
http://www.usmuscle.com.au/Forum/showthread.php?t=114
And here is a photo
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/MG_3291.jpg
4 link rear with 9" (and Wilwood discs also)
17" Budnik Bladerunner wheels 8" front and 11" back (at least 315 tyres)
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/Bladerunner.jpg
So car will be minitubbed
No cage (so will run sub frame connectors)
Exterior will be totally smooth, no chrome, shaved handles, no cutters
Grille will be a 69 Camaro RS grille
Interior will see a custom made metal dash, with console to run entire length of care up to rear parcel shelf
4 custom made bucket seats (will be customised using orginal seats but they will look way different)
I have a few other tricks planned to keep the car very smooth and basically everything hidden
Obviously the above is not comprehensive but I guess you get the idea
Car will be painted candy apple yellow with ghost flames
Week after Easter the work begins.
Got 1 week off to strip the car right back to bare basics (ie every nut and bolt removed) then off to the shop.
Let me be up front to say my role in this build is ideas and phone calls (and spending money). I've tried to do cars in the past and I am OK but not the quality I want on this so I am handing it over for all stages to experts.
I expect the build to take 18 months at the least.
More photos can be found at:
http://s156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/
Obviously once I get going I will keep posting updates.
Anyone interested I am going to have a lot of original 1968 Camaro stuff that will not get used in this build. Therefore if anything is of interest drop me a line. It does have a running 327 SBC and a powerglide that are for sale now.
Thanks for taking the time to read about my car.

Good to see you finally join the party!
If I showed you the 68 my friend bought for similar money....well you did exceptional! :) IMO I know what you mean about panel gaps! My 69 had new 1/4's put on and the gaps were no good at all.... we spent alot of hours correcting those mistakes... needless to say I would try to avoid buying a car with new sheetmetal installed for that reason......
Can't wait to see this bad boy take shape! It sure as hell sounds like its gonna be something!!!!

Great deal with the car... i'm sure you'll be able to find some doors...
Looks like you have everything planned, from body style, subframe and motor.. Do you have all the workshops you want to do work on it lined up?
Sounds like it's going to be a tuff looking (and going) car when your done.. Keep us up to date, i'm sure plenty of people are going to be interested in how you go with all these bolt on custom bits.. i know i'm keen to see how the chassi goes ;)

Grille will be a 69 Camaro RS grille
Am I reading this right????

05-04-2007, 12:27 AM
Yep you sure are, I love the 69 RS Grille....I know many will think I am ruining a 68, I like the 68 RS grille but prefer the 69, but hate the 69 rear end and rear qtrs, prefer the 68.....so I am building the best of both

Latest update 7th April 07
Spent the last 2 days literally pulling the car apart. All interior is out. Everything except the heater box, wiring loom, steering column and pedal box. Everything else has been removed, down to every last screw.
All chrome trim on outside, all bumpers etc. Would have removed grille but we always have one stripped bolt don't we...mine I can only reach with a tube socket so guess that one will wait.
Need to talk to shop on Tue as they want me to leave panels on at this stage so car will probably go to shop on Tue or Wed "as is".
All running gear still in it.
Will post photos tomorrow.
What I love that I have found......
All panels really straight except for minor ding in rear quarter that will easily roll out (looks like someone bumped it with some heavy it's not bad). And front lower (ie lowest under grille) valence panel as a hit is one side, again very easy to repair. Everything else (except doors) is eiether brand new or really straight. Even heater box, radiator support etc all brand new....it really is a new car bar a few panels...all repos so panel gaps are the biggest issue to resolve.
Anyway photos tomorrow

Stripping is the easiest part.. just remembering where it all went is the tricky part :p
And if the doors and those small dings are all you found.. you've done well...
speaking of the doors found any yet?
As for the gaps, it's what everyone seems to complain about.. with genuine or repo.. repo just seem to be that little bit worse, nothing some spacers can't fix i'm sure ;)
What is the quality of the non-genuine front guards like? i might be going that route as well.
cluxford
10-04-2007, 09:20 PM
Front guards are really solid....come round check em out. Car will be here for a few weeks.
No doors yet, haven't called the guy in Canberra yet, have looked at some repos though and they feel strong...so might go that path given everything else is damn straight.
Next update about to come through

OK latest update...well really photos of last 2 days work.
I know stripping is the easy part.....
First off 2 photos that show only panel damage on whole car:
first brand new repo rear qtr that has been "bumped" see red circles:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_2158_red.jpg
Second front valence, small hit on right hand side, see it's lifted up the bumper bar support....this will need to be straightened:
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_2159_red.jpg
The rest are just random photos of interior stripped out. The more I work on this car the happier I am, it's all straight and no rust bar the doors......wow !!!!

floors look nice and solid.. and whoever did the roof done it properly..
Also you might want to check the price of a new front valance, i was going to repair mine (minor dings) but saw they only cost $64.95 ($US) brand new.. all depends on how fussy you want to be, and how easy it is to fix the current damage..
As for the 2 dings on the guard.. i wouldn't stress :p they are in a nice and easy spot to get at from the behind to knock back in place ;)

New front sub frame purchased today $7200 AUD.....(after FX and shipping)....not cheap...wait till the wife sees this one  ....but I think it is a good addition to the build
Now just gotta wait for the slow boat to arrive

Hey Mate, I just joined this site, been browsing for a while and its good to see some new members here and projects going.
I like your thoughts and plans for the build, however was wondering if you have a budget set out for this beast.....if so would you like to share. I can see some serious $$$ here to achieve the result your after.....not that there's any thing wrong with that :)
I'm hoping to get into a Camaro myself this year, or next... and whilst I'd love to build something like your plan, I got to face it at the end of the day, we all know that money talks. SO I have been thinking about the old build vs buy....
Anyway, was wondering if you have a plan on the budget side, broken down like $ for bodywork, $ for engine, $ for interior, $ for wheels and suspension etc, etc.
EAT-30T
20-04-2007, 10:28 PM
if you can find a car that suits you ... your better buying.... I could only imagine this particular build to be an almost $100K build...... these cars need alot of money.. so if you don't quite have the bank roll.. your best getting a nice turn key driver car.
Helli
20-04-2007, 10:38 PM
Yeah...i was thinking 100k easy..... Looking forward to seeing it come together.
cluxford
21-04-2007, 12:04 PM
Ha ha you guys.....$100K I would love to get out of this for $100K. Reality is it will be more like $200K.
Here is what HAS been spent just so far:
1. $16K to buy the car in the US and get it landed into Australia
2. $21K Engine - full turnkey crate motor landed in Australia - but I still need to spend more on it
3. $7.5K new subframe
So that's $45K there already and haven't even started to really build it.
The rest the estimates are as follows:
Body work and paint - $50K. It's pretty straight so hoping can get some change out of this
Rear end inc diff $6K
Tranny $4K
Wheels and tires - $8K (getting custom made Budniks)
Engine $5K
Brakes $5K
Steering conversion $2K
Interior $10K
Grand total = $45K already spent plus further estimates of $90K = $135K
The budget I negotiated with the real boss (aka my wife) was $150K but I expect I am under estimating in nearly all areas hence why I believe it will be closer to $200K.
That's why it will take at leats 2 years to build as I don't have that cash lying around it's all coming off the home loan

$50K on body.......

I want it laser straight plus will be full custom metal dash integrated console from dash to rear parcel shelf....
All paint will be House of Colour Candy Yellow with ghost flames.....inside and out...
Even thinking of doing full metal hood liner

Thanks for sharing. Good to see you're being truley realistic on the budget, and hopefully won't have to bail out half way through the build.
Looks like it is going to be a top shelf car.
You also got the approval of the finacial controller which is half the battle.:)
Looking forward to seeing the progress.

Sub frame gets delivered to freight forwarder next Wed...so probably a good 8-10 weeks away, but based on what I was told today I may need to speed that up...will post photos as we progress inc after blasted

Hi Mr Cluxford, great progress on the 68. The picture of the inside of the new roof looks as if it is fibreglass weave or something like that. Is it a glass or CF roof panel, or does it have some kind of liner fitted on the inside?
Cheers.

Motor gets unloaded form the container today !!!!
Been 6 months getting here...but it's finally here.
I'm away next week so don't get to see it till I get back.
For those who don't know it's a:
632 Cube BBC
Merlin III
tall deck
dynoed at 816Hp and 825 ft/Lb torque
RSZ28
12-07-2007, 09:47 PM
Mr Cluxford...Bill Mitchell 632...awesome motor....how do you get the 632 on the road in Vic? In NSW you can go +15% on an original engine....which is listed as typically the 396 or maybe a COPO 427 for a 68 & 69 (though you rarely see any doc that says 427's came in 68's so rare as rocking horse doo doo) which might get one to 490 cubes...but 632?
Cubz rule!

How do I get it registered with 632 cubes......no idea...will figure that out when it comes time to rego it........if worst comes to worse I'm not sure they could really tell.
the 632 is just a tall deck big block, exact same block as a 427 truck engine, just bored out more.....
So unless they are going to pull off the heads and measure the bore I guess I could always just tell em it's a 427....
Does anyone know....how do they check engine capacity ?
SirGeo
13-07-2007, 10:46 AM
i'd go with reg'ing it as a 427 ;)

13-07-2007, 02:34 PM
In NSW you can go +15% on an original engine....
% Increase on original dispacement is based on the assumption that you are leaving the rest of the car standard. As far as I can see this doesn't apply to you Cluxford... Basically you will need to Engineer the car to handle the 632 including sub frame strength, brakes, suspensions etc etc. Thats what your engineers certificate verifies. This is exactly how Hot rodders run big blocks in a 1920's or 30's chassis. Those things came out with little four bangers that wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.
Go balls in Cluxford, work with your engineer and you'll have no probs reg'd as a 632. Just my opinion, but I am an engineer.

Went to the shop today, camera in hand.
car totally stripped, was supposed to have been blasted but got delayed so was hanging from shop roof.
Took 2 photos, will post later...then camera dies, wife been bloody taking snaps of 18 month old daughter on not charged the camera.
Motor arrived yesterday at shop, gor 1 crappy snap with mobile phone camera will post that later also.
All I can say is one Fn huge motor and the 1050 CFM Dominator sitting on top is literally massive, you can loose a hand down one of the chambers....
Pics to follow later tonight and more pics next week once camera charged and car blasted.....
Happy days !!!

Was going to go Budnik Bladerunners
But 12 weeks to produce them and get em here and chassis guy needs wheels now...also be close to $5K by the time they are at my house

So instead I went for Dragway Indy's. Always really liked These and Convo Pro wheels, they don't make Convo Pro's in 17 inch rims, but they do make Indy's.
Will be done and picking up in under 3 weeks and only $3K.....

Picked up my wheels last night...need the rears to fab up the 9"
Not quite as deep a dish as I wanted but need a raised mounting pad to clear the C5 vette calipre....
17 x 11 rear - 5" backspace with 1.3" raised mounting pad
17 x 7 front - 5" backspace with 1.3" raised mounting pad
means basically no dish on the front (ie less than 1 inch)
and about a 4.5" inch dish on the rear

Totally custom, you can ask for whatever you want, even the raised mounting pad was machined to the exact size I wanted. At the 15 inch rim they are all steel aaand made to set sizes, at 17 inch they are 100% billet and you can order whatever you want.
It is also a really cool drive up to Kinglake to pick em up from the factory

Discs and Calipers arrived this week.
330mm fronts, 300mm rears
C5 vette calipers all round
Where did you source your brake kits?
I purchased the CPP kit with stub axles and all bearings installed like yours, I have single pot callipers but large ones, thinking of upgrading as they look really small against the 20" rims.

Chris,
Do the calipers bolt straight up to your new stub axles on the new front end? I cant quite recall if your new front end included corvette control arms and stub, or tube control arms and a drop axle.
Thanks.

Yes they do, the front end has 2" drop axles with designed for C5 Vette...mine will bolt straight up
Front end was supposed to be delivered on Tue to Panel Shop...just got back and it's not there still with shipper...bummer was hoping to get a good look at it today

Finally after 4 months gathering dust in the chassis shop I have some significant progress to show......I'm really stoked, the next 2 weeks are going to be fun.....
Actions to be completed are DSE Minitubs (I'll come back to this), 9" rear, 4 link.
But I also said I wanted it lowest legal height all round (ie 100mm) so in order to achieve that we are mocking it up. That means, discs on all round, front sub frame in, motor bolted in and transmission bolted in, with wheels on all round and will put 1 front guard on this week also.
Obviously it will all come off again, but will look good
In the photo's below the lowest point of the front sub frame is 100mm clear, as is the rear end. The rear frame rail hasn't been notched yet, so the tire will ultimately go in about another 1/2 inch inside the wheel arch.
Now the problem, 100mm is damn low, only gives me 1" suspension travel in front coil over and only 1" clearance inside the rear inner wheel arch.
Suggestion is go up 1" all round and have clearance at about 150mm off the ground. But if I do that there will be a gap between rear tire and wheel arch which I did not want.
I can get around this but I need to replace the entire rear inner wheel arches (ie not use the DSE tubs, but fab some up). I may go this way but will see once it is mocked up with everything in it and 150mm clearance...expect those photos later this week.
I love the way it looks in the photos...damn low on 17" rims.....
All right ready for some eye candy....first time I have seen the AME front sub frame in the flesh....wow what a piece of work......
More photos later in the week

OK latest update....left the camera at home by mistake so no pics today but got to go back Mon for some more alignment discussions.
Latest is:
Everything is mocked up (loosely put in / on)
Discs are on
Wheels are on but not without a dash to Kinglake to get 12 mm wheel nuts instead of 7/16
T400 in
and then the big problem....632 cube motor in...sort of....here is the list of issues
1. Dizzy is hard up against firewall. I'm putting in a new smooth firewall anyway so will need to set it back 1/2 inch
2. Sump hits power steering rack at the front...undid bolts and dropped rack 1/4 inch and motor still hits and needs another 1/4 to "bolt" up to frame mounts....current plan is to rip off sump and notch it at front by about 1 inch (as long as we can clear the mains caps)....other options is 1/2 inch on the sump and raise motor on mounts by 1/2 inch .... but if I do that then trans hits the tunnel so may need to modify the tunnel a bit to accomodate
Anyway they aren't big issues just time consuming. We will make it fit
Car looks great 100mm off the ground all round, mocking up front guard on Mon to ensure front tyre clearance on fender.....
Rear DSE minitubs won't work cause of the high profile tyre so now going full tubs and new rails...so that job just got way bigger.....
So if anyone wants some cheap DSE Minitubs brand new never used ...they will be for sale
car will be out of chassis shop by end Feb !!!
Will post some serious pics on Mon.....100mm is damn low.....speed humps might be a problem.....but damn it looks sexy

Very nice, have worked out the problem with engine placement yet, I have a 509 Merlin 3 with a glide in a standard chassis no problem, would it be worth talking to Art Morrison to get their input. The car is shaping up a treat keep the pics coming.:)
cluxford
09-02-2008, 12:21 PM
Is that 509 a tall deck ? That's my problem the block is a tall deck so longer stroke is the problem, the sump is a lot deeper....
But I'm not worried some massaging and it'll be in
tonner
09-02-2008, 04:29 PM
No I believe it to be a standard deck.
As you have already researched the sub frames is there much difference between the Art Morrison and the DSE? And what rear end are you using
Regards
Greg
cluxford
09-02-2008, 04:46 PM
Cool, standard deck will clear no issues, mine has the longer stroke so the oil pan is much deeper
OK, on sub frames.
Performance wise they are almost identical. In fact on Lat-G there is a whole thread that discusses the performance differences in detail if you are interested in a good read...just do a search.
Price wise they are similar.
Almost everyone I talk to says they are the 2 best on the market, although there is a new one coming out that is a secret (seen a few posts) that some of teh guys who do a lot of these say is way better than both,.....I have no detail but have been watching the posts.
I talked to Mark at DSE and Craig at AME.
The primary difference between both is the look.
DSE is an 'original" sub frame look
AME is a "fabbed" look....which is what I prefer.....
If I went DSE I probably would have also bought their 4 link rear.
As I went AME i am having my rear end custom built locally here in Australia.
As I want the car slammed I now have to run full tubs, whereas I had bought the DSE mini tub kit.....
My car will have a 4 link, 9" with Strange 3.55 Posi centre, 31 spline axles and full coil over suspension.....and it will be cheaper than a pre-fabbed one by the time I had it shipped.
But back on front ends you can't go wrong with either....just need to decide what look you are after.

Latest update .... with pics :D
So per my update of last Fri today I dropped in to mock up ride height with a front guard attached.
Lets say we have a few interesting little challenges to overcome....but that's all part of the fun. I'm just a tad nervous now we are pushing the limits when it comes to rego.....
OK, first couple of photos, basic ride height.
Remember 17" rims, 245 x 45 on front and 325 x 50 on rear.
I love the rear, but front has some issues....love the low look but will need to roll the lip and tyre sits a log way to the edge....may need to go a 235 or even a 215....also seems to sit a long way forward in the wheel arch, we are not sure why that is yet but front end isn't bolted up, just hanging loose so hopefully it's just an alignment issue.
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3091.jpg
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3075.jpg
Man I love the look at the rear.....exactly what I was after.
I've now been talked into going a full rear clip. This will include custom rails and probably go bigger tubs as well....just in case I want to put much bigger rear wheels on later.....so that minitub job has now become a full blown rear end rear work.....
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3078.jpg
here is the reason I need bigger wheel tubs....at 100mm ground clearance I have no room left for wheel travel inside the tub.
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3079.jpg
OK, up front, the 330mm discs look real good under the 17" rims, they fill em up nicely. Calipers not on yet but will be nice and snug...
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3088.jpg
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3082.jpg
Now the HBC (huge Block Chev), all in all only 2 minor fitment issues
1. Sump hits power rack, will probably notch the pan to make it fit, assuming we can but looks OK
2. Dizzy hits firewall, but smoothing that out anyway so will push it back half an inch
But wow it fills the engine bay nicely

Cluxford, awesome build you've got going here and like everyone else on this forum i cant wait to see the finished product.
One question i want to ask though is whats your reason for swapping the 1050 Domintor for the dual 600 Edelbrock setup? Would'nt you make more power with the Dominator?
cluxford
13-02-2008, 07:07 AM
So engine makes 816Hp as is....
Car will be street car mostly, and rarely raced...
dual quads with a hilborn scoop just looks awesome and I reckon I will only loose maybe 50-80Hp so still over 700Hp which will be more than ample....
So it's all about look.
Plus the Dominator sits real high out the hood and wouldn't get registered
TUFF68

Once you get that monster engine running, i recommend a good dyno tune as i found with my World crate engine that it ran very rich out of the crate. Had my car on the dyno yesterday to get a bit of a tune into it for the nostagia's this weekend and the first run was 435rwhp. After going down a heap of jet sizes to get the air/fuel ratio correct we finished with 466rwhp. A 31hp gain just by changing jets
Will you be using pump fuel or race fuel Cluxford? I'm pretty sure the difference in our fuel to the fuel they use in the US is the reason for them to run a lot richer on our fuel. Anyone else with a crate motor have a similar experiance?
cluxford
13-02-2008, 10:42 AM
Pump gas for now, and yeah I heard the same thing that it will run rich and need re-jetting....so you have confirmed what I had heard

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3194.jpg
On the front end Sean did an awesome job, how'd he overcome the motor clearance issues. OK firstly he raised the upper control arm by 1.5 inches which allowed better suspension travel and clearance, second he made a half inch "block" to sit between the motor block and the motor mount. Bolted it to the motor and then bolted the motor mounts a half inch forward. By doing this it has raised the engine half and inch and we now clear the rack and pinion and also moves it forward half inch so we now clear the firewall....and with all that it's all still perfectly flat...I have to say it was a master stroke.
Now my only minor concern is the valve covers look like they will go damn cloe to hitting the bonnet...so I may have some creative work to do there but not worried about that just yet.
Pics of clearance and UCAs

They look nice in the DSE pics. Did you get it in on the boat via Auto Ezy?

Tanks I had shipped by air by DSE...didn't cost that much, all up $1000 or thereabouts for the tank and shipping to my house (note I had other stuff shipped with it).
As I did custom rear frame rails and not standard, we had to trim about 5mm off the side of the tank so it will fit between the new rails....but the trim was so small you can hardly tell it's been trimmed.
Will get shots of it when I next go to see the car...

how do they check engine capacity ?
The switched on RTA guys look at the casting marks on the block.
I upgraded mine from the 350 to 406 not only did they make me have the engine number stamp area X rayed but they analysed the casting mark on the SBC. Dont know big blocks but this mark tell you the year maufactured and displacement.
Like 69Coupe said, get it engineered and then they dont really look at this stuff, but then you have to make the engineer happy.
Technically you have to even engineer a 9" conversion as it was not an original GM item and welding has been done, found that out on mine.

On my Merlin big block on the front of the block just below the head on the left hand side has the engine size (509) and the work order number (7332) stamped into the block. The right hand side has the engine number. Like you say, if you know where to look it is easy to tell the capacity of an engine.
Chris, Greg check your merlin's, they should have the capacity stamped in the same spot

Handles are off a VT Commodore...yeah the internal linkages are a huge amount of work, especially as I need to keep the existing door locks and strikers. We have to basically flip everything around as the originals go "down" and the Commodore handle pulls up...so there was a bit involved but the guys did an awesome job of working it out

Will have to wait for steering clearance but will let you know once done.
Header clearance will be an issue as we modified to to shock absorber mounting point (raised it 1.5 inches) to lower the car, thuse eating up more room in the header area.

What do I do ?
Well I used to be the CEO of a Systems Integrator (IT stuff), but started my own consulting business 6 weeks ago (loved bing a CEO but was making the private shareholders super wealthy).
I haven't earned a penny for the past 6 weeks which has been interesting...
But my business is about to boom big time, as much as I hate seeing the world heading to a recession as that is really bad for many people, for me it means boom time as the consulting I do is all about doing more with less which businesses are screaming for right now.
Thanks for the kind words, the car has stalled in the past 6-7 weeks as the shop had other jobs they had to get done and we were waiting for the steering wheel to arrive. That arrived and was dropped off on Tue this week...so it's all go again and progress will ramp back up.

Been 2 months since the last update, progress is in full swing.
A lot of little work that is not that impressive in photos has been done, welding stuff in now that it is all tacked up, cutting holes for switches etc etc, little stuff that is critical but time consuming and not that visual.
Well a few other little things have happened:
1. Dash pod and sunken gauge cluster is now done and fully welded in (pics below). I'm really happy with this and the 2 Dakota Digitals look a treat tucked up in there

http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3889.jpg
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3890.jpg
2. Bonnet scoop issues rectified and this is all sorted now, here it is in all it's glory. This is the exact look that I was after, I am absolutely stoked with this
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_3891.jpg
3. Metal hold liner was been welded in prep for getting stiched into the roof of the car today, it will be welded and in place by Mon next week. It apparently looks awesome in the car. No pics of that yet.
Then it goes off to the engineer for rigidity testing...if it fails I am screwed as I am ot sure what else we could to to add any more metal welded into this thing unless we went a cage...it has sheet metal welded all over the inside of it. Oh and we are moving to solid (billet Ali metal) subframe bushes, just to tighten it up even more.
From here on in progress will be rapid.

Went off for torsional rigidity test in early Mar and then I have been away for the past 2 weeks.
Here are the test results if anyone is interested. Bottom line is it passed without an issue.
Plan for the coming week(s) is to get cracking on:
full floating hubs installed

then start prepping for paint

What does that all conclude Cluxford? Say a guy had stock front and rear with made up subframe connectors would he of passed that test? reason i ask first time iv heard of this test, How much did it cost?
Thanks
cluxford
24-03-2009, 03:45 PM
Not required for a standard car and ain't cheap. Cost me $1300 (with towing).
Reason I need it is my car is so heavily customised that I need a whole bunch of engineer reports to get it registered.
I have an aftermarket front frame, running solid body mounts on the front. Fully custom 4 link rear end with new frame rails, including narrowed rear end for the tubs. I also have welded in sub frame connectors. In fact it is basically a full frame car.
Reality is if you don't need it (which 99% of people don't) save the bucks and spend it on something else.
Posted it as thought some may be interested in it.
TUFF68
24-03-2009, 04:00 PM
Chris, are you able to explain to us what it is they actually do to the car during the test ?
cluxford
24-03-2009, 05:46 PM
Yeah, in a nutshell they try and "twist" the car. So they put it on this frame (was done in the guys 4 car garage). The frame allows each corner to be raised and lowered and he measures the degree of twist in the car.
That's the best laymans way of describing it.
Mine passed with flying colours. As you can see very very little / small degree of twist. Don't ask me to explain the technical chart as I am so far out of my depth on that.
Note we put cross bracing in the car as well, across the floor just in front of the front seat mounts, so not only does it have solid mounted new front, new rear, welded frame connectors, welded dash console and welded metal roof it also has side cross bracing at engineers request.
If this failed I would have been astounded
AUSCAMARO
25-03-2009, 02:47 AM
Surely that can't be all that good for your car.. All the twisting of it that is...
Seems like a bit of an overkill when blind Freddy himself could see that there would be more structual integrity in this car than a stocker!!

That test would probably replicate torque loads from engine/ mounts and cornering forces etc. I think.
I know a bloke with a big block HK Monaro who had to do similar.

cluxford
27-03-2009, 11:44 AM
OK, got some more info.
In the pics you will see a number of 8226 in yellow. I'm told a "pass" is any number above 6000 Newton Metres. 8000+ is exceptional for a unibody car. Full chassis cars are typically in the 10,000 mark.
The graphs shows degree of twist from back of car to front of car. So you'll notice more twist as we get forward of the firewall (which you would expect on a unibody car). Again great news is on these cars they only have to pass it from the firewall backwards. Again my car passed with flying colours.
Engineer would like to see the panhard bar a little longer, but not mandatory. Also wants more rear shock travel given the ride height I am looking for. So we will go longer shocks and lighter springs (on the current mounts).
So now we get cracking again.
Headers, tailshaft, full floaters and 35 spline axles all being made up now.
Then prep for paint

Starting to work on paint prep. Tailshaft, axles etc taking a bit longer than expected so started skim filler this week and speed filing. Didn't have camera so no pics.
Next week it will hit the rotisserie and underside will be a little smoothed out (not going crazy on underside as it will be a show car, but a driver). Will get pics while it is turned over.

Other than that the guys working on the Camaro have been flat out. Paint Prep has started.
Front glass is set up for flush fitting. Check out what we have done with the cowl and front guards.
Car will be in high fill next week and flipped over for underside treatment.
Oh and I am playing around with a new Flip Camcorder (hand held, 2 hours of 720p HD video, USB connected and point and click). I've taken 2 short 15 sec grabs. Need better hand stability, but you get the picture. More longer videos to follow.
Oh and the guys have in the shop right now:
1. Killer Nova. Bagged and 20's with sweet subframe, this thing looks amazing. Check it out at the very end of the 1st video you see it for 1 sec
2. 2 x 69 Camaro's. Blue mintubbed, flat black (needs work)
3. 57 Chev 4 door
4. GT500 Mustang
5. Viper, yep a real viper, you can see the bottom of it in one of the videos.
They have a bunch of other cars there, but these are the notable ones. The Nova is moving at the same pace as mine, but it will be a killer car when done, I really like it

How do they finish the edge of the windscreen if you don't use the factory trims?
Is there some type of seal to give it a "finished' look?

Perhaps a mob like this could do a yellow extruded rubber (or similar material) seal

Roof and side panels are all now in high fill.
Underside getting smoothed out ready for paint.
Had more photos but camera died today so lost a lot of what I took. Have some video I will post later.
Underside looks sweet.
Also filled the roof cavity (between the outer skin and the new metal hoodliner) with expanding foam yesterday. Still a bit tinny / echoy but way way better than last week.
Love what these guys are doing.

It's probably still 2-3 months away, we still have some work to do.
Oh and I have selected the paint, and we will have 1 panel painted up to see what it looks like in a few week.
PPG Liquid Crystal Vibrance Series. Yellow Pearl. Looks amazing in sunlight.
3 coat pearl with metal flake and Harlequin (ie looks green tinge on some lights, red tinge in others).
Will paint a panel up shortly, if it isn't quite what I want it will then be HOK Candy

No major updates other than to say car is officially in primer today. All prepped and primed.
No pics it was under plastic when I got there.
paint will be a while though.
Headers, exhausts, electrical pre-wiring and trimmer pre-trim work to be done now. That is get all these guys working over drilling holes, etc etc etc for what they need to do before it goes to paint
Custom seats will most likely be the most work

Latest update. Car now in primer.
Exhaust place can't fit me in for 2 months
So off to trimmer next.....
Only thing I am not happy with, rear wheels. Had em so they would fill up the guards...well so I thought. With full floating hubs and diff in place, it's a fricken 11 inch rims and 325 tyres, and they sit 2 inches inside the outer lip of the guard.
Looks sh!t, makes it look like they are 185's.
So time to spec up a new set of Budnik Bladerunners. 13" with a 7 inch dish. Tubs are big enough, may just need to roll the lip on the outer guard but don't care about that.
Gotta get some meater looking rears, pissed that this has played out this way but better to do this now. Current rims and tyres will be burnout puppies.
Just another excuse to spend some cash on car bits....woo hoo !! (Wife will be happy)
Now gotta find a good drag radial to fit a 13 inch rim

Chris , could you just put some much larger tires on there ? Those rims look under tired to me ? Big Hoosiers or somethingmaybe?
cluxford
11-08-2009, 06:29 PM
Yeah that's the problem.
Try finding choices in 17" rims.
15's no probs heaps of choices. Hoosiers don't do 17's.
Mickey T's do 15's and 18's and 20's (not 17's)
M&H - which is what is on there now - do 17's. They have 2 choices 325 (which is on there now) or 390.
The 390 is 3 inches wider than the current 325's.
I will need to move up from an 11 inch rim, to a 12 inch rim and it will look fat (better tyred as you say). I just don't know if I can squeeze 15 inches of rubber under there based on the current tubs (which will suck given all the time effort and $$$ into this so far).
Other options are different offset on the rims, or widen the length of the diff housing to push the tyres out a bit further.
Going back down to shop tomorrow. Would love to see if I can get the M&H 390 under there
*rayman*
11-08-2009, 06:33 PM

I guess it`s personal choice but I far prefer the look of the tyres sitting well under the car ala drag racing. The way the camaro rears slope inwards at the front of the rear wheels makes any tyres sitting out level with the lip, look a little bit 70-80`s resto to me :) Saying that if you can get the 390`s under it will scream tough,
Car is coming along well mate, going to be stunning.

$282 each - no discount code (bummer)
Shipping by Fedex $200
Expected to arrive at my door next Tue
So that is $564 for tyres, plus $200 for shipping = US$764 or US$357 each per tyre
Bargain in my mind for a 390 wide tyre. I'd probably pay close to $600 for that in Australia
