Close out panel also now installed.
Iphone pics so sorry for poor quality. These hood pics were literally in direct sunlight,I think they came out so poor as the it is so fricken bright even I was squinting looking at it, looks like the camera can't handle it so bright....

No major updates, lots of little things being done. Sparky been all over the car last 2 weeks, belts going in, rubbers in, doors coming together etc etc, nothing photo worthy....
Off to the trimmer next week.
Of interest though is the door handles, Caprice chrome ones, guys building it suggested them, at first I thought they wouldn't look that good, but they look great...

Too bare and bland without handles. ;)

4 leather buckets, door trim, parcel shelf, all leather bound, but very simple, just a double stitched chevy bowtie in the doors....very very simple.

On the pics up the top showing the close out panel, you have two hoses running along the manifold, one into the water pump and to the back of the manifold and the other is in the front of the manifold going to the back - where does that one go to??

Hoses are radiator overflow tank mounted just in front of valve cover on right hand side
Left hand side tank is power steering res
Catch cans are now in bolted to close out panel
Braid going back along the manifold are heater hoses and fuel lines

Finally back in the country after being away for a while with work...
But good news is some meaningful updates.
Car was finished today at the trimmers.
Inline with the smooth theme of the car everything leather wrapped with no screws or studs.
Rear seat over the tubs, double stitching to accent and a bit more bolstering than the original seat came out with.
3 point inertia reel belts (all brand spanking new out of a VE commodore) built into rear seats.
Love the door trim, if only I could have also had no door handle....

This truly is a slick lookin car. Im very impressed with that interior..it looks very smooth and blends with the dash and console seamlessly. Ya gotta be happy with that. I wasn't too keen on the door handles when I first saw them in one of the earlier posts but they look right at home and the chrome justs sets them off. I stand corrected. Trivia..
Not that Chris is going for originality, but headrests were only a (rare) option on 67s & 68s.
Headrests were standard on the 69 and became compulsury on Jan 1st 1969. Prior to that you could order a 69 with headrest delete which was one of the rarest of all options. ;)
Love the seats too Chris. :)

Vic hot rod show is 100% locked in
Summernats I have booked but may or may not be there if not ready.
Perth ain't gunna happen. Cost to transport is just not worth it...lowest quote I've had is $5K. I could do it myself for about $3K
But sure it will get west at some stage

Some interesting updates....getting ready for engineer
Talk about money pit.
Wound up the springs...oops still only 2" off the ground can't go higher. New Coilovers all round...$$$$
Probably end up running a set of late model 20" rims plus wound up springs will get us across the line height wise. I have a pic below the front is on a jack, but not really that much higher than it will be for rego, rear is at rego height...
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_1809.jpg
Axles finally arrived, what a drama - I now have 2 sets of axles - ...but in now and driveable tomorrow...
Master cylinder...started leaking last week, we pull it find out my expensive brand new billet MC is in fact a second hand re-sleeved piece of crap !! Now running a standard MC to get through rego and new billet jobbie on fast track from US
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t37/cluxford/IMG_1808.jpg
front indicators....LED's not doable for roadworthy...so temp front indicators on...gotta love this look...ugly....these will be gone after rego

Tim, it's a Hydroboost. It runs off the power steering pump rather than engine vacuum, supposed to give me a strong pedal etc (till I throw a belt then I'm screwed). Stylerod Panels in Croydon are doing all the work, awesome bunch of guys, and it's been such a pleasurable experience (except the past 3 weeks, everything that could go wrong has and it's all cost me money.....), but hey this close out, can't help but smile

Here's the other sad news...it won't go to the shows with the tunnel ram and twin carbs, we just simply do not have enough time.
Once rego'ed we have to do a final cut and buff, detail it top to bottom etc etc and have it ready to go before Xmas as shop shuts at Xmas, so it will sit in my garage from 23rd Dec till 6th Jan (well maybe it won't just sit there maybe it will see some road time)
So we don't have time to paint up a new bonnet, flame it, bolt on new manifold, re-connect all the hoses, run new fuel lines etc...all these things have been test fitted etc but will take a few days and between now and 23rd just no time.
So it will go single carb 4" cowl to the shows...
Bummer, but hey, at least it can be driven

Nev, yeah it will never really be finished....
OK just got back from running around all morning 100% good news

2. Passed CO2 at idle test with flying colours
3. Weighed at public weighbridge... 1660 Kgs with a full tank
4. Dropped it into trans place as the trans isn't playing friendly, needs some tweaking
I got to drive it 100 meters or so from the trailer to the weighbridge and back to the trailer...my ears hurt from the smile I had

What is the noise limit exactly? 96 or 98dB? How did they measure it and how close were you to failing? :D
It's 96dB
the meter is placed half a metre behind the exhaust
Car is taken to 3000 rpm
3 readings and averaged
first up it went 101dB out of RH side and 98dB out of left
But motor was cold and mufflers not warmed up (which they are supposed to be according to regs)
Warmed here up and she went 95.8dB on both sides...so squeaked in

Tim, it's a Hydroboost. It runs off the power steering pump rather than engine vacuum, supposed to give me a strong pedal etc (till I throw a belt then I'm screwed). Stylerod Panels in Croydon are doing all the work, awesome bunch of guys, and it's been such a pleasurable experience (except the past 3 weeks, everything that could go wrong has and it's all cost me money.....), but hey this close out, can't help but smile
Thanks Chris. The hydroboost sounds like a great idea.
I'm glad to hear you had a win with the epa tests.
As for not being able to have the tunnel ram straight away, I don't think anyone will be disappointed seeing it with the single carb.
Again, great work.

Steve, Lyndsay,
The funny thing was I wasn't nervous at all, it's actually pretty mild to drive. The drag radials are real sticky, but never got it over 70 KPH. Can drive it with one finger, the power steering is so light
On the ****ty 255 street tyres, now that was fun...big smiles.
I need to get it on a track where I can really put the boot into it...
But I have to say that the hydroboost and 330mm discs are scary, took the owner and his son in the car, both have drag cars (one a 541 BBF NA, the other a 540 BBF blown), both were in awe of the stopping power of this thing, it literally stops on a dime....

Reasonable day today with the engineer.
Passed all driving tests (braking, speed, handling etc)
Didn't pass on general underbody inspection.
- All very minor stuff like clearances of fuel and brake lines on rails and exhausts, pretty minor stuff we'll fix next 1-2 days
- Major item was extractor pipe clearance on steering shaft. That's a biggie to fix
Took 2 hours to drop the extractor out and we took paint off etc that will need touching up....now she's a driver so not going to get new pipes welded etc, we'll simply apply some persuasion of the hammer variety to the pipes to get the additional clearance required on the steering shaft
Do all that get it re-inspected and fingers crossed off to vic roads we go....
Very pleased...

Tailpipes are off as new ones (with no mufflers being made as we speak).
Front also will come down about 1 inch, but that leaves the collectors about 2" off the ground which I can see being a massive issue...oh well we'll fix that later...time to drive

Not going to try mounting a flat accordian, paper style air cleaner mounted in the cowl hood with a carb flange seal? (Think the design that VT-Z Commodores with factory air boxes use, but a bigger one for a truck perhaps.)
Even a round 14x4" air cleaner could be made to work that way. Many 427 'Vettes of the late 60's were that way from factory.
Unless you had chrome piston rings, I would never run without an air filter.
I assume the rings are moly..? Moly is too soft to deal with grit.

Put 50ks on it today in traffic around town. Got 30 ks and put 22 litters in it. But had put, 9 on it since last fill. So my guess is about 120 ks to the tank (60 litres)
Now I have it home I need to lean it out. It runs so rich my eyes burn from the petrol and exhaust fumes. Exhaust fumes are bad even with the new tips on it. But also everything is still new and "burning in". But I do have a small fuel leak out the cap at full that I need to fix
In today's heat I couldn't figure out the aircon as I didn't install it. Didn't want to fiddle with it in traffic so will look at that later today and get the settings sorted
All in all though heaps of fun got sideways twice even with 390s. Can't wait to put more miles on it

Steve, that's exactly what I'll be out looking at later today....havent had a chance to get out there since getting home, promised my daughter play time in her new pool (blow up she only small) so been doing that...but will have more specs later - not an expert on Dominators so will be seeking expert guidance

Fair enough.
A 632 is big and it may need more air for idling than what that Dominator was designed for. BTW, what CFM is it?
Those holes are are "tricks" that even Holley themselves now do as standard on the HPs and Ultra HPs that helps large engines idle without having to open the throttle blades too far, that then stop/hinder the idle ports working or responding to changes.
I expect the Dominator has them, but maybe it doesn't.
4 corner idle helps a heap too as it also has idle circuits in the secondaries. This reduces the "load" of the primary circuit by 50% and allows much more accurate tuning. My old 850DP (really great carb) was a fumey pig at idle.
What's it's list number, maybe my book/catalogs wll have info on it..

It's a 1050...will get specs later today...I think the fact that it sits up inside the cowl is also part of the problem, I don't think it's getting enough air, meaning it's running rich due to the lack of air.
Thanks for the tips that will give me a good start point
blackoutsteve
31-12-2010, 05:10 PM
Also, the list number will tell you if it's a 2 or 3 circuit Dominator. 3 circuits (I'm reading) can be way over rich, especially on street driven.
cluxford
31-12-2010, 07:54 PM
Just my luck...crate motor have no list or model stamped on the carb.
It definitely appears 3 circuit though, plugs are fouling and black soot belches out the left bank on start up
it's a 4 corner idle
tomorrow I'm going to play around a bit. Have some hints on things to try, I can kill the intermediate circuit by removing the air bleed on it, I can also lean it out with bigger air bleeds (won't be able to buy tomorrow).
Either way should be able to play around and start to tune it in....
But I think 6 months and the twin Demon's are going on anyway, so not going to put too much time into it, just see what I can do to get it less fumey in the short term

Is the Dominator a Holley or a BG or ?
The rich symptoms you have are not a guarantee.. Best to know for sure as it may simply be rich.

It's a holley, I know it's just a guess, I need to pull it down to the metering block to see if it has the 3rd circuit, but it sure seems it based on symptoms
No numbers on it anywhere...really strange
blackoutsteve
01-01-2011, 07:47 AM
I think I saw in a pic of yours, that there were 3 air bleeds per venturi.. These would be an idle, intermediate and high speed (from the out side in).
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/ccrp_0603_run_a_dominator_on_the_street/photo_07.html
"Three-circuit carbs also use a third air bleed for each venturi, but SMI warns us that a few weird three-circuit Dominators used an internal air bleed placing only two bleeds on the top of the venturi. This overhead view of a three-circuit Dominator reveals the location of the idle air bleed (A), the intermediate air bleed (B), and the high-speed air bleed (C)."
I think it's the Intermediate (B) that is additional and the give-away that you have a 3 circuit.
The metering block is the for-sure way to tell.
http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/ccrp_0603_run_a_dominator_on_the_street/photo_12.html
Anyway, read the article. It may show a way of tuning a 3 circuit for streetable use.

I know Brian.. We used to talk on the HotRod/Freiburgers/CarJunkie/BangShift progression of forums. (His GTO by the way, was his dad's car that also brought him home from hospital just after he was born.. How awesome is that?? :D)
He participated in the early Drag Week or StreetCar Shootout (forget which), but look, a 3 circuit Dominator delivering 12mpg with a car geared to run 127 in the 1/4..

It's a 1050...will get specs later today...I think the fact that it sits up inside the cowl is also part of the problem, I don't think it's getting enough air, meaning it's running rich due to the lack of air.
Thanks for the tips that will give me a good start point
Chris
I hads similar problems on my 406 and 502, the 406 well worked as you know, would fowl after 1 week, one month i went through 3 sets of plugs with very little driving.
406
Holley 750 vac sec
Replaced with king demon 850dp, then had issues with fuel cooking due to mechanical pump
Step 3 replaced with 750 ultra hp 4 corner plus air bleeds, this solved the problem.
502
Holley 950 dp; 560 hp lots of smoke fowling plugs, buring eyes due to fuel excess but good hp
Holley 825 vac secondarys (std 502 carb) no fuel burning in eyes, streetable perfectly, except runs out of fuel and have to wait for secondaries to open.
Holley Ultra 950 My plan is to replace with this, lots of tuning and regular but can be adjusted INFINITLY. ** PENDING BLOWER INSTALL **
Chevs dont need the big carbs on the street due to their direct short runners on manifolds.
The fact that its sitting inside the cowl, if its sealed i would think its getting enough air, if you unseal it then you have deal with air with temps up around 400degC.
your current carb whilst it may deliver big hp at the top end, your bottom end street ability is crap, i.e. running rich. [your motor is primarilly a drag engine.
my suggestion would be to get it on a dyno and play around with several carb choices with the focus being to look for a flat lambda and consistant hp.
My example: I either got 550 hp out of the 406, or settled with 510-520 with the street in mind and not buring eyes due to the excessive fuel being used.
I dont like your chances of using that carb and getting a good tune state down low with out lots of work, been there done that..

Paul, thanks for the detailed comments...everything is pointing to getting the tunnel ram and twin demons on as planned, will give me way more options. None the less I'll play with this for a short bit and get some drivability out of it (even if smelly). Again thanks...this all helps

Now I have it home I need to lean it out. It runs so rich my eyes burn from the petrol and exhaust fumes. Exhaust fumes are bad even with the new tips on it. But also everything is still new and "burning in". But I do have a small fuel leak out the cap at full that I need to fix
Sounds like a very familiar story to my World crate engine when i first got it on the road Chris. Fouled the plugs in less than 50k's. Have you changed the jetting yet ? I put mine on the dyno and the Air/Fuel ratio was very rich, around 9 i think it was, we kept going down in jet sizes front and rear and each time it leaned out a bit more and made more power as well. I think in the end we went down about 6-7 jet sizes front and rear and got the air/fuel ratio up to about 12 i think it was and left the dyno with 35+ horsepower more at the rear wheels. So my guess is you are way down on horsepower at the moment as well.....
Unless you are an expert on tuning carbies i would seriously consider tuning it on a dyno

Marty, haven't touched it yet, job #1 once back from Summernats. All my research is suggesting changes of about 6 jet sizes, seems to be quite a common issue. I am no expert on carbs, but it's only temporary till the Tunnel Ram goes on, so I'll give it a crack and see how she goes

Scott, mine are Aerospace components. They used to sell with the filter, but appears they no longer do (have to buy it separately). But they are cheaper. I paid $120 each for both mine, they are $90 right now

Funny you say that I 200% agree they are 7s and had 2" backspace. But they rubbed at ride height I wanted on outer guard so we had bs moved now basically flush. So not perfect but together it low that what it took

2" BS? so 5" out... hmm must be the design of the wheel centre that puts the rim face flush.
My Boyds are 8" with 4.5" BS and they have a good amount of dish! I am considering selling those though to try and get more dish! lol
